CONFESSION OF A PSYCHO CAT, 1968, herb stanley, USA, 9/10

this is a very cool sexploitation movie. i really like it alot! the actor are deliciously bad and everything is wrong in the technic but that the point i supose of old goldy cult movie!
everything who is on the something weird distribution is excellent..i would like to own the entire collection..they produced also the video that i have of sexual and drugs class archives(you know the lsd girl who badtrip on a poor hot dog?!?)

-There's something not quite right about socialite, Virginia Marcus(played wonderfully by Eileen Lord). Specifically, she's flat-out insane!!! When not allowed to go on safari with her older brother, Virginia decides to have a little hunting expedition of her own.....three men, right in middle of New York City! The common bond between these men is that they've all committed murder. Buddy, a young junkie, killed a girl by giving her an overdose of heroin. Charles Freeman, a forgotten actor, killed his lovers husband with a razor. And Rocco(played by "Raging Bull" Jake LaMotta), is an ex-wrestler, who trampled a man to death in the ring. After inviting these men to her home, Virginia offers each of them $100,000 if they can survive her manhunt for 24 hours. After a little deliberation, they all accept.

Originally shot as a straight-forward thriller, "Confessions of a Psycho Cat" was later(three years) given the all-to-familiar sexual insert treatment to appeal to fans of sexploitation. It makes things terribly unbalanced, but on the other hand, gives the film an odd quality. In one scene we have LaMotta, who has the acting prowess of Tor Johnson, in his apartment talking with a young hooker. It takes only about 3 seconds before you realize that this topless (and clueless) actress isn't really in room with him, but has (terribly) been edited in. More than likely, the original actress (who's legs you can see at one point) was clothed, and I guess that wasn't good enough. The added footage is rather funny: the rooms don't match, the background noise doesn't match, and most amusingly, the back-and-forth dialogue is just plain retarded! There's several other silly moment like this, but all-in-all, "Confessions of a Psycho Cat" is wild, zany, over-the-top ride that 60's exploitation fans will get a kick out of.

BATMAN BEGINS, CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, 2005, USA, 8/10

yeah i'm very late on this one...was waiting for a right mood to take it from the store..
i like it...more than the few last batman...this one is very dark...i think christian bale is the best batman actor ever. he's more dark and agressive ...i adore his big voice... cillian murphy is perfect in the part of scarecrow..i like the hallucination idea...gotham city is dark like in burton movie but more realistic..ken watanabe is great as always...gary oldman is good but kind of strange to see him in a "normal" cast...well, all the actore was perfect beside katie holme...i just don't like her...

christopher olan movies are great and i was surprised by what he do for the batman franchise! he's presently working on a batman sequel for this one...realease prevue in 2008!
his filmography:

The Prestige (2006) (post-production)
Batman Begins (2005)
Cinema16: British Short Films (2003) (V)
Insomnia (2002/I)
Memento (2000)
Following (1998 )
Doodlebug (1997)

SYNOPSIS:

As a young boy, Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of him--a trauma that leads him to become obsessed with revenge. But the opportunity to avenge his parent's deaths is cruelly taken away from him by fate. Fleeing to the East, where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra's Al-Ghul, Bruce returns to his now decaying Gotham City, which is overrun by organized crime and other dangerous individuals manipulating the system. Meanwhile, Bruce is slowly being swindled out of Wayne Industries, the company he inherited. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, along with a prototype armored suit, leads him to assume a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong; he becomes Batman!!! In the new guise, and with the help of rising cop Jim Gordon, Batman sets out to take down the various nefarious schemes in motion by individuals such as mafia don Falcone, the twisted doctor/drug dealer Jonathan 'The Scarecrow' Crane, and a mysterious third party that is quite familiar with Wayne and waiting to strike when the time is right.

FUN STUFF ABOUT THE MOVIE :

-The device, on the heel of his boot, that the Batman uses to summon a swarm of bats is taken directly from Frank Miller's "Batman: Year One".

-A second stage Scarecrow look was created for the hallucination scenes but was never shown on film. The mask was more organic and tighter around the actor's face.

-Before Christopher Nolan took over, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to make a Batman movie based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and have the author Frank Miller write the screenplay. By 2003 there was a first draft screenplay with story boards, which are properties of AOL Time Warner. Warner's decision for not producing the film is unknown, but based on the details that have since leaked out, it would probably have to do with the screenplay, which strayed a considerable amount from the source material, making Alfred an African-American mechanic named "Big Al," the Batmobile being a souped-up Lincoln Towncar, and Bruce Wayne being homeless, among other things. This is all detailed in David Hughes' book "Tales from Development Hell."

-Marilyn Manson was considered for the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow.

-Director Christopher Nolan decided that there would be no second unit, and so for the whole of the one hundred and twenty nine shooting days Nolan oversaw every shot of the film personally.

-This is the first movie to use the new DC logo.

-During the interviews he performed to promote the movie, Christian Bale continued using the American accent he'd adopted to play Bruce Wayne/Batman. He explained that he didn't want potential moviegoers to be confused about why Batman, an American institution, was being played by a Welshman.

-When the prisoners are all released from Arkham, briefly visible is Mr. Zsasz, a serial killer from the comics with tally marks scarred into his skin, representing each of his victims. Mr. Zsasz also appears in the courtroom in the beginning of the film where he is being transferred to Arkham Asylum by Dr. Crane.

-Unlike most characters on the movie, Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes, doesn't exist in "Batman" or any other DC Comics' series. She was created by director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer.

-The calling card the Joker leaves is a replica of the Joker Card from the 1989 graphic novel "Arkham Asylum".

V FOR VENDETTA, JAMES MC TEIGUE, 2005, USA, 5/10

really don't like it! i understand that the writter alan moore didn't want to get involve in this project..beside some hommage at 1984 and some red & black shot looking like ss esthetique, everything was so pathetiquement wrong.. this project has alot of potentiel but just copy the commercial hollywood model. some scene are just hilarious when it's supose to be drama----> really...the idea of making nathalie portman kissing v who wear his mask is just like ugly! when she's on the balcony under the rain..crying..gave me taste to beat her!

well like i said this winter in an other thread about this movie, i'm really happy that i didn't pay for watch that!

---i was awestruck at is naivete in a world where fight-the-power anarchy is now marketed as a fashionable identity statement..by the corporations that helped raise a generation on bands like rage against the machine , by the armchair-leftist bloggers who flog the same righteousness day after day... v for vendatta has a playful-demon vitality, but it's designed to let political adolescents of every age congratulate themselves.. it's rage againts the machine by the machine...----

SYNOPSIS:

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Well, V for Vendetta WAS visually pretty looking. Seriously, though, what did you expect of the Wachowski brothers? They rip off everything Alan Moore has ever done, so it's normal that they eventually had to make a movie about one of his series. The only good movie they ever made was the first Matrix and even that was a Dark City ripoff.

Alan Moor doesn't want to have anything to do with ANY movie adaptation of any of his work. I can't say I blame him.
I'm feeling nyarlathotypical right now..

Motha fucka bump!

Sorry Gen, I don't have any movie reviews... im still a little brain dead from this weekend. ughhhhh.

But! If you have bit torrent... try and download a movie called:

OTAKU NO VIDEO!! (1990) by Gainax.

Remember from my incrediblely pretentious and flamboyant review of Neon Genesis? I mentioned something about the Otaku Lifestyle. To make a long story short: "Otaku are fucking losers who have nothing better to do with themselves but to stay home and watch anime and wack off to hentai." Originally, Otaku stood for "house." But! My favourtie website: [ ] says that otaku culture can be considered ANYONE who is passionate about ANYTHING. Whether it's film, grafitti, music production, star trek, computer programing, prono, drugs, internet chat rooms/forums, food, photography, video games, philosophy, theater, design, prostitution, politics, Star Wars, etc. People in Japan would call you a big ugly loser. Pretty stupid, eh? This is because of some wacko mother fucker, who watched one to many asian horror films and decided to go out kill 4-girls, then molested and mutilated their corpses. like in one of the films he saw. Here are the facts: Between 1988 and 1989, Miyazaki mutilated and killed four girls, ages four to seven; he then sexually molested their corpses and ate portions of his third and fourth victims. The crimes — which, prior to Miyazaki's apprehension and trial were classified "The Little Girl Murders" ... provided by [ urbanencyclopedia.org ] But seriously, Gen. If you like researching Serial Killers, Look this motherfucker up. Tsutomu Miyazaki.

Anyways, this movie is supposed to be a parody on Otaku culture. It's half mockumentary, half anime. The documentary parts are little clips of losers who go talk about how pathetic they are -as a joke. The other half is anime, where these fictional characters, who each have their own passions, go through all all sorts of adventures and use their skills (that they've gained by being obsessive) to... I dunno, save the world, I guess.

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds and looks really good.

Stupid badly drawn cartoon. Waiting for something to happen until episode 5 30 minues into it.
Nothing was going on realy so I cut it off. just awfull. don't rent it.

2/10

Osaka Tough guys
directed by Takashi Miike

That was funny actually. In the interview he said he was inspired by Dorkman mangas. It's two high school drop outs that are tricked into joining the Yakuza's low budget sect. It's a pretty pathetic group of ppl that goes around selling used panties for "business" or other lame skeem. There's a love story too. It's not as violently graphic as the other Takashi movies, but shoes alot of puke, breasts and ass.

GRUESOME TWOSOME, by herschell gordon lewis, usa, 1967, 10/10

well, alot of peep don't understand that i'm a fan of the great herschell gordon lewis, the grandfather of gore. yeah...it's true his movie was kind of poorly directed(particulary this one!)
often filmed like if it's a play...the sound is terrible...plein de faux-racord... but whatever i think that is fabulous! it's make me laught alot and the story is so funny!it's writted by louise downe, she also writed the genial bloody feast.. i also liked alot the surf, rock n roll and free jazz score!

but i hate the main character.she's so dumb! the only bad quality of this movie is that the blondasse didn't die at the end!

SYNOPSIS:

A demented, elderly woman has her mentally retarded son kill and scalp various young women to use their hair for her wig shop while a persistent coed tries to link various killings on a local Florida college campus to them.

Charles Band... the guy is awful but the movies are almost all cult classics. He underpays all of his actors and films mostly in Romania to save budget, yet still...

The Puppet Masters series is certainly the best, in my opinion, though a friend of mine prefers his Trancers series. Whichever it is, they both have good and bad sequels.

Other than that, I'd advise you to watch Intruder, a cheap movie about a serial killer in a grocery store, with cameos by Bruce Campbell, and Sam and Ted Raimi. Pretty interesting. Also, any Charles Band movie with Jeffrey Combs in it. From Beyond is a good choice: not only is Jeffrey amazing in it, it also stars Ken Foree, the main protagonist of the original Dawn of the Dead! The story is so-so until the second half, where people start getting naked for no good reason...

Stuart Gordon is also a good choice for movies. Most of the stuff he directed is realted to Lovecraft. Dagon and Re-Animator, in my opinion, are the best of the bunch. Can't wait for House of Reanimator in 2008!

LA DEMOISELLE D'HONNEUR, CLAUDE CHABROL, france, 2004, 9/10

i had an excellent time at the theater tonight while watching the avant-dernier chabrol.
it was the unique/only projection in all nyc. i felt kind of special.
i think i was the only one who wasn't reading the subtitle! hehehe ! sometimes it's usefull to be a french frog in this english world!lol!
it was projected at the angelika a litle artsy theater very axed on repertoire movies.( equivalent of the soon defunt :( cinema du parc..)

the screenplay is based on a Ruth Rendell novel. i'm gonna buy the book soon because i really enjoyed the creepy story. i read some critiks and it's seem that the adaptation was well made.

the actor was more than excellent. benoit maginel always juste and never go into caricature even if it's can be easy with a part like his. laura smet is very good too and not too forcee. she's very beautyfull.
a kind of wild exotik beauty.. it's crazy how beautyfull women with normal curvy size can be represent in french cinema if you compare with the majority of anorexia women in usa films!

the light, the mise en scene is very etudiee..very natural but complex in a same way..
but well we face a chabrol work so any surprise at this nivel!

BRICK, writed and directed by RIAN JOHNSON, 2005, USA, 1000000/10 !!!! (new release on dvd this next tuesday)

i'm still stuned. i'm so impress. it was amazing. i saw the preview in theater ans wasn't really int. and now i regret very much to haven't watch this one on a big screen. it's been a long time i saw a fantastik, incredible, amazing movie like this one. seriously i can believe that is the first directing for rian johnson!

it's a hommage at the detective and film noir genre transposed in a high school. the protagoniste is totaly humphrey bogart.it's also an hommage in few points at the maltese falcon a 1941 film noir from jhon huston. it's the 40' and 50' genre adapted in a teen world.

the technic is perfect.

the mise en scene marquante en tout point. the one who impress me the most was the one where the main character light a creepy basement with the reflexion of the sun in a mirror.

the music represent also the film noire world. very intrigante.

the light is superbe. often sun right in the camera. it's fabulous.

the ambiance very well worked is captiving. the character are all well cast too.

the editing made by the director is also impecable and the rythme absolutly perfect. it's rian jonhson who also edited the movie may. one of his only other work as a crew for a movie.

that's why i'm so impress by someone who don't have that much experience can do something grandiose like that! give me taste to take my camera.

rian johnson is a director a surveiller.

SYNOPSIS : brendan frye is a loner, someone who know all the angles but has chosen to stay on the outside. when the girl he love turns up dead, he is determined to find the who and why and plunges into the dark and dangerous social strata of rich girl laura, intimidating tug, drug-addled, dode, seductive kara, and the ominous pin. but who can he really trust?

FUN STUFF ABOUT THE MOVIE:

- According to the review in "The New Yorker", this film was edited on a home computer.

- In his meeting with Trueman, Brendan refers to a teacher "Kasprzyk" as being "tough but fair". Mrs. Kasprzyk was an actual teacher of English (including Advanced Placement English) who was largely known as being tough but fair at San Clemente High School, the school where the movie was shot.

- The horn signal Brendan has Laura give him (long, short, long, short) is the same as the knock Sam Spade tells Brigid O'Shaughnessy that he'll give her as a signal it's him in Maltese Falcon.

- As Brendan enters the Halloween in January party, a girl with long hair passes by with a cooler on wheels. This is the main character from the movie "May", which director Rian Johnson edited.

- The film was shot in Rian Johnson's home town, and the High School featured is the one he attended himself.

THE HEART IS DECEITFULL ABOVE ALL THINGS, by asia argento, 2004, usa, 10/10

this is an excellent movie and i'm not surprise at all. asia argento grow up on film set and she is an incredible actress since she's kid. well with the family that she have not to dificult to develope talent!

the screenplay writed by asia(one of my fav cinema women, she's so devoted!) is an adaptation of a j.t. leroy novel (he's'/her also credited as writter of gus van sant's elephant). i can't wait to buy the book now.
i'm totaly curious about the writer phenomen(see the article at the end of review)

the originality is very present in this kind of vaudeville. it's very shocking and i have to admit that some part was dificult to watch..i have litle nausea at some point... understand me, i love gore, blood and strange stuff in movies but i have dificulty when the violence is made to a children. so it's not for sensitive people because some part are just very sadique.

i liked alot the story and the meaning of it : how the system take care very bad of the lost souls of our decadent society. how they do thing for clear the conscience but in fact just make thing worse.

the acting is incredible. asia argento in a teen mother prostitute is very good. well it's not very hard for her, even if she has to play a sister of good she's always gonna have this very trash sexual aura.

the litle actor, jimmy bennet is terrific, as the abuse children.. i even wonder how they explained certain contains of fuck up scene to his parents and convince them that he should play the part!

some cameo are extraordinaire : marylin manson(wow without make-up he's more scary than without!) as a child molestor is particulary creepy. winona rider(normaly i can stand her!) is so good in a psychologist
part. she's ugly and change her voice so bad. micheal pitt( ex-fiancee of miss argento) is ok as a drug dealer. not too hard he just have to immitated is own life. he's very cute and talented. but i prefer his par in gust van sant's last days. time armstrong(rancid) make a short apparition as a punk( what a surprise!)

the directhing is excellent. the ambiance is very expressionniste. the emotion's character respire dans le decor.

SYNOPSIS : Jeremiah, a child pulled from his foster home, is thrown into a troubled life on the road with his teenage mother, Sarah. With her, he travels through the country roads of the U.S. and learns first hand about the troubles of the world.

NOW, FOR WHAT IS ABOUT THE MYSTERIOUS J.T. LEROY :

Jeremy "Terminator" LeRoy is the name used by an American author who originally published as Terminator and later JT LeRoy.

Though the author claimed LeRoy was born October 31, 1980 in West Virginia, an exposé in October 2005 gave evidence that JT LeRoy was a hoax created by Laura Albert. In a January 2006 article in The New York Times, LeRoy's agent, manager, movie producer, as well as several journalists, declared that the LeRoy seen in public was Savannah Knoop, the half sister of Albert's then partner, Geoffrey Knoop. In a February 2006 interview with The New York Times, Geoffrey Knoop stated that Laura Albert was author of the LeRoy books. To date, Albert has neither confirmed nor denied that she is the writer behind the LeRoy books, and her former partner said he did not believe she would ever admit to her role in the scheme.

Negative backlash over the literary hoax overwhelmingly focuses on Laura's credibility to speak on the issues which had supposedly impacted LeRoy such as being HIV positive, being transgendered, a victim of child abuse, a prostitute, and formerly homeless. It has not been shown whether Laura Albert has special, if any, direct personal experience in any of these matters. The hoax is widely compared with the coincident controversy involving author James Frey.

LeRoy, citing extreme shyness, refused to appear in public without being disguised in a wig, hat, and sunglasses.

On January 6, 2006 JT LeRoy posted a blog entry titled "the Hoax edition" which cites an article in The Guardian which takes a kind stance over the hoax issue stating that "identity is irrelevant". Also included are t-shirt prints which make light of the hoax, reading "I am the real JT LeRoy" and including an artistic image of the author's iconic blonde wig and sunglasses. Additionally, promotional references to The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, DVD cover art and opening dates and a Sundance Film Festival viewing.

Betty, I know you miss Quebec, so I figure I'll mention two movies:
"Que Dieux Benisse L'Amerique"...seemingly low budget, with a vaery "Dogme" feel to, it, story takes place on the famed Sep.11th, but in Laval (or Longeuil - I think), as the lives of a bunch of neighbors get tangled while a murderer killing sex offenders is on the loose. The paranoia element is very well purveyed, as is the mystery "who-dunnit" aspect, but there was something, that I can't put my finger on, that stops me from saying it's a great movie, but it was interesting, and well played out. Check it.
"Bon Cop, Bad Cop"...well I haven't seen it, but it looks like a cheap Canada/Quebec collaboration action film (une navette, on se comprend)...actually it looks fucking terrible, let me know if I'm right (though I probably am - lol)... ...
