Re-animator totally rocks...

I just watched Mirrormask, had never heard of it before, and it was pretty fuckin' cool! Great story, very much in the same vein as The Neverending Story and Labyrinth.

MirrorMask centers on Helena, a 15 year old girl in a family of circus entertainers, who often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. But as her adventures continue, she begins to wonder whether she's in a dream, or something far more sinister.

Great, great movie! Done with the Jim Henson studios, the whole thing looks absolutely amazing. The movie totally sucks you in, and for a little while, it once again made me feel like I was 8 years old again. I don't think I can recomend this one enough! If you loved Neverending Story and Labyrinth (and any of those "modern kid gets sucked into a fantasy world" type of movies) then this is an absolute MUST WATCH!
I'm feeling sleepy right now..

INSIDE MAN , by spike lee, usa, 2006, 8/10

that's far to be my kind of movie but when i saw that spike lee was the director.. i get kind of very curious.. i'm a very huge fan of his early work. the great spike lee escape from brooklyn and go to manhatan filming an astucious bank robery!

well i was waiting for nothing so i certainly wasn't desapointed.. the story is so-so..the screenplay have a very int. naration ..make saut dans le temp..pretty cool..

but where the movie is the most efficace it's at the directing nivel..wow ! spike lee is one of the best modern usa director in my opinion!

i like the shoulder camera. well use in this one. and the blue touch du grain the l'image is beautifull.
some of the shot rmember me clockers. travelling arriere with the actor on a kart so he seem just coming without actualy walking.

some funny hommage at old movies of spike are cool. ho! and i also liked the politic side of the intrigue and the well ethnicity of nyc represent in the movie.
the open music is very nice, i like indian music rock or pop.(see the video of this song at the end)

but i still prefer spike lee here in brooklyn!
haha !

each time i saw one of his movie it's remembr me when i mooved here : i was sure that in my neighbourhood black peep gonna be seat in stairs..u know same ambiance than his movies.. but non my area is totaly white.. very disapointing! ha! brooklyn is big so..

SYNOPSIS :

Inside Man is the story of a tough cop, Detective Frazier (Denzel Washington), who matches wits with a clever bank robber, Dalton (Clive Owen). As the dangerous cat-and-mouse game unfolds, a wild card emerges: Madaline (Jodie Foster), a power broker with a hidden agenda, who injects even more instability into an already volatile situation.

FUN STUFF ABOUT THE MOVIE :

- Shot in 39 days.

- The picture in Arthur Case's office (the owner of the bank) is "Cards Player", by Paul Cézanne.

- Contains two references to previous Spike Lee film Do the Right Thing (1989), the pizza given to the hostages being from 'Sal's Pizzeria' and Denzel Washington's character quoting a line from the film.

- This marks the fourth collaboration of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington.

- Two actors from Dog Day Afternoon (1975) were cast as a homage to that film, with parallels. "Marcia Jean Kurtz" plays a hostage named Miriam in each film, and "Lionel Pina" delivers pizza in both.

MY TOP 5 SPIKE LEE (that's kind of hard):

1- do the right thing
2- crooklyn
3- clockers
4- malcom x
5- summer of sam

EXCELLENT SONG OPENING INSIDE MAN~Chaiyya Chaiyya by A.R Rahman( i want to make a electronic version of that!)

APOCALYPSE NOW, FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, USA, 1979 10000000000/10

i watched that for the 100 times. little useless to make a review of it ..well i think everybody watched this one. but i'm just in perfect extase again.. selon moi one of the deepest perfect movie ever made..
every image is so fantstikly magnifique! i have so much tought when i watch that. like what a fucking speecies we are us, human... well i will not say 1000 times that this MOVIE LEGEND is perfect so there is cool stuff for the fan..and for the peep who don't know that much about it..

SYNOPSIS :

Vietnam, 1969. Burnt out Special Forces officer Captain Willard is sent into the jungle with top-secret orders to find and kill renegade Colonel Kurtz who has set up his own army within the jungle. As Willard descends into the jungle, he is slowly over taken by the jungle's mesmerizing powers and battles the insanity which surrounds him. His boat crew succumbs to drugs and is slowly killed off one by one. As Willard continues his journey he becomes more and more like the man he was sent to kill.

FUN STUFF ABOUT THE MOVIE :

- Steve McQueen was the first to turn down the role of Captain Willard

- Harvey Keitel was then cast as Willard. Two weeks into shooting, director Francis Ford Coppola replaced him with Martin Sheen

- George Lucas was originally set to direct "Apocalypse Now" from a screenplay by John Milius. Lucas' initial plan was to shoot the movie as a faux documentary on location in South Vietnam while the war was still in progress. Francis Ford Coppola, who was to be the executive producer, tried to get the film made as part of a production deal with Warner Bros. The deal fell through, and Coppola went on to direct The Godfather (1972). By the time both men were powerful enough to get the film made, Saigon had fallen and Lucas was busy making Star Wars (1977). Milius had no interest in directing the film. Lucas gave Coppola his blessing to direct the film himself.

- Cameo: [Dean Tavoularis] the production designer is filming a war documentary.

- Cameo: [Vittorio Storaro] the cinematographer is filming a war documentary

- Director Cameo: [Francis Ford Coppola] filming a war documentary.

- Francis Ford Coppola believed that Marlon Brando was familiar with Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and had prepared for the role before the legendary actor arrived on the set. When Brando did come out, Coppola was horrified to find that Brando had never read "Heart of Darkness", did not know his lines, and had become extremely fat (Kurtz had always been written as a tall but starvingly-thin man). After some panicking, Coppola decided to film the 5'10" Brando as if he was a massively built, 6'5" brute (to explain Brando's size) and steered the camera clear of Brando's huge belly.

- Willard tells Kurtz that he is from Ohio, Martin Sheen is actually from Ohio.

- Martin Sheen was actually drunk in the scene where Willard is drunk alone in his hotel room. All of Sheen's actions in that scene were a result of his real intoxication. When Sheen punched the mirror (which was real glass), he really did cut his hand as shown in the film. While drunk, Sheen also began sobbing and tried to attack Francis Ford Coppola.

- When Francis Ford Coppola asked Al Pacino to play Willard, Pacino turned him down saying, "I know what this is going to be like. You're going to be up there in a helicopter telling me what to do, and I'm gonna be down there in a swamp for five months." The shoot actually lasted 16 months.

- Marlon Brando so angered Francis Ford Coppola that the director turned over the filming of Brando's scenes to Jerry Ziesmer, the assistant director.

- Francis Ford Coppola lost 100 pounds while filming.

- Martin Sheen had a heart attack during the filming and some shots of Willard's back are of doubles, including Sheen's brother who was flown out specially. Coppola was so worried that backing would be withdrawn by the studio and distributor if news of Sheen's heart attack leaked out, that he kept it quiet, even to the extent of explaining Sheen's hospitalization as being due to "heat exhaustion" in the official Shoot Schedule.

- It took Francis Ford Coppola nearly three years to edit the footage from Apocalypse Now. While working on his final edit, it became apparent to him that Martin Sheen would be needed to tape a number of additional narrative voice-overs. Coppola soon discovered that Sheen was busy and unable to perform these voice-overs. He then called in Sheen's brother Joe Estevez, whose voice sounds nearly identical to Sheen's, to perform the new narrative tracks. Estevez was also used as a stand-in/double for Sheen when Sheen suffered a heart-attack during the shoot in 1976. Estevez was not credited for his work as a stand-in or for his voice-over work.

- Coppola shot nearly 200 hours of footage for this film.

- During some sequences, the sound of the helicopters was created on a synthesizer to blend in with the music.

- A typhoon destroyed sets, causing a delay of several months.

- The water buffalo (carabao in Filipino) that was slaughtered was real.

- Sam Bottoms was on speed, LSD, and marijuana during the shooting of parts of the movie.

- There are no opening credits or titles. The title of the movie appears as graffiti late in the film, which reads, "Our motto: Apocalypse Now".

- Randy Thom, one of the film's sound mixers, said that the sound mix took over nine months to complete.

- The character played by Harrison Ford wears a name badge that reads "Lucas". George Lucas directed Ford in American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977), two films which made Ford famous. G.D. Spradlin's character is named "R. Corman", after producer Roger Corman.

- Martin Sheen's character name combines the names of the two eldest sons of Harrison Ford, Benjamin and Willard.

- Laurence Fishburne lied about his age (he was 14 at the time) when production began in 1976.

- Coppola threatened suicide several times during the making of the film.

- Carmine Coppola (director's father) wrote the score for this film.

- The scene at the beginning with Captain Willard alone in his hotel room was completely unscripted. It was the last scene to be shot, and Martin Sheen told the shooting crew to just let the cameras roll. The crew was so disturbed by his actions, such as punching the mirror, then rubbing the fresh blood on his face that they wanted to stop shooting, but director Francis Ford Coppola wanted to keep the cameras going

thnx for the info on Apocalypse Now, it's funny 'cause I just watched it the other day...I also love the movie, but it had been a while since I had taken the time to watch, especially since I own the Redux version which is bloody long, over 40 min. of added material, I believe...in my humble opinion it's the best of the 'Nam films, though FullMetalJacket (obviously) comes in second, and PLatoon lagging behind a bit. I was never partial to some of the classics like DeerHunter, only parts of which are interesting. I also own CasualtiesOfWar but I find it lacks credibilty in it's script...and, of course, my favorite post 'Nam movie - don't laugh - is First Blood, the first Rambo movie, if you don't believe me check it out again, with it's strong anti-hick-cop message, though it is partially a typical action movie...but I think I may have gone over this before... ...oh well... ...

First Blood was awesome and so far from the Rambo sequels... I put it in the same category as, say, Taxi Driver or Falling Down. Society makes monsters out of some people but then are shocked when the monsters bite back. Love it.

Na: First Blood is pretty damn sweet... David Caruso looking like a teenage boy is pretty hilarious. Especially 'cause he's such a whiney little bitch... but what's really brilliant is watching Rambo: First Blood II and comparing it to the formula laid out in 70's Italian cannibal movies. I was going to write an article comparing/contrasting 80's POW films with 70's cannibal flicks - but never got around to it. A film magazine in the US was pretty excited about it... I wasn't sure if there was enough to fill out a feature length piece.

That said, if you watch R:FB II think of Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, Trap Them & Kill Them or any of the other great genre 'classics'... the linealogy is pretty clear. Capture, torture sequences, escape from captivity... not as graphic certainly - but the influence is certainly there. Incidentally, James Cameron had a hand in R:FB II.

It's also amusing to think about the Rambo films when watching Death Race 2000... as John Rambo doesn't seem too far removed from Machine Gun Joe (the bit where he stands up in his car and starts machine gunning the crowd making the Rambo face is priceless)...

Also highly recommend Herzog's documentary Little Dieter Needs To Fly - which is a bio pic on a pilot who was shot down in Asia and managed to escape after 6 months in captivity. They revisit the area where he was captured - and follow his escape route. It's an odd film (as are all of Herzog's works), but it's pretty intense.

Brain Dead ( [ imdb.com ] ) is a pretty weird film too... anybody else seen it? It's been years... I should try to track it down... speaking of which - I think I'm going to check out From Beyond tonight... it's been years - and now I can finally see it in widescreen.

and we watched it few timeS and now i'm almost a fan..i have the collection at the videostore..when i saw them make me think about u! :) for the vietnam war movies we always been d'accord! 1- apocalypse.. 2- full metal.. 3- platoon
do u remember when we watched hamburger hill? that wasn't so bad?! but yeah dear hunter always tought it was so boring...and casualty of war kind of too drama..i don't like that much micheal j. fox...EXcept bien sur in the back to the future trilogy!

SOME FUN STUFF ABOUT FIRST BLOOD :

- There are numerous differences to the book. In the novel, John Rambo dies.

- Another ending, where Rambo commits suicide, was filmed, but test audiences found that conclusion to be too depressing, so the script called for Rambo to live, hence the sequels.

- One of the stunt drivers broke his back jumping his police car.

- The name "Rambo" came from a brand of apples of the same name (source: writer's commentary, First Blood: Special Edition).

- This film has a reputation of being overly violent. However, the total body count of the movie is four; One confirmed kill (the cop who falls out of the helicopter) and three possible accidental deaths (the officers in the cop car who crash into a parked car, although their vehicle doesn't explode like the parked one).

- Warner Bros. had considered to make the story with Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Al Pacino, and Dustin Hoffman.

- Originally budgeted at $11 million, the film ultimately cost closer to $17 million as the production ran months late.

- After showing buyers a 40 minute edit of the film, the international rights sold in five minutes.

- John Travolta was considered for the part of Rambo.

- For the scene where Rambo jumps from the cliff and falls through the trees, Sylvester Stallone opted to do the last part of the stunt himself, much to the concern of director Ted Kotcheff. His concerns were apparently well founded, as the stunt didn't go as planned and Stallone broke three ribs. This apparently took place on camera and the shot is in the movie.

- Sylvester Stallone asked for $3.5 million for his role. Producers Mario Kassar and Andrew G. Vajna told him he could have $2 million. The extra one and a half million came from television sales.

niner: taxi driver is excellent(plan to watch it again soon)! falling down is such a great movie! i watched 1000 times it was always on super ecran when i was kid..l'enrage.. french version..except for the game(david fincher..), it's one of the only micheal douglas movie that i really liked.

FUN STUFF ABOUT FALLING DOWN :

- Filmed during the L.A. riots of 1992.

- Bill Foster's license plate is D-FENS.

- The man who is yelling about being "not economically viable" in front of the bank is wearing the exact same clothes as D-Fens. Even the tie pattern is the same.

- The stripper for Prendergast (Robert Duvall) is named "Suzie". When she starts dancing, someone says "Susie Q", a reference to Apocalypse Now (1979), which also featured Duvall.

- Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, and James Keane all appeared in Apocalypse Now (1979).

- In the scene in which the drive-by car crashes, there is a mural of Christ on the wall. This same mural is also present in Colors (1988), also starring Robert Duvall, in the scene in which "Pac Man", played by 'Sean Penn' , spray paints a kid's face.

- Every studio in Hollywood turned down Ebbe Roe Smith's script. Producer Arnold Kopelson was getting to the stage of considering cable TV when Michael Douglas came across the script and pronounced it one of the best he'd ever read.

fishead: you like cannibal movie like me i think..wich one is your fav? and wich one, selon toi, is the best between cannibal holocaust and cannibal ferox/make them die slowly ??? i'm a huge cannibal movie fan too!

FUN STUFF ABOUT CANNIBAL FEROX :

- Advertisements still claim that the movie is banned in 31 countries, even though several countries have lifted the ban since it was first printed.

- Giovanni Lombardo Radice used the stage name John Morghen to make audiences think Cannibal Ferox was more of an Americanized movie rather than an "obscure foreign film".

- Umberto Lenzi used the same music as he used in his earlier film, Mangiati vivi (1980), in this one.

- Like Cannibal Holocaust (1980), this movie contains several actual animal killings. Though his character kills an animal in the film, Giovanni Lombardo Radice thoroughly objected to the animal killings and refused to participate in them (a double had to be used). Director Umberto Lenzi tried to convince Radice to do the killings by telling him, "De Niro would do it," to which Radice responded, "De Niro would tell you to fuck off."

FUN STUFF ABOUT CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST :

- The special effects in the film were so realistic that director Ruggero Deodato reportedly had to go to court and prove that it was just make-up and fake blood and guts.

- The animal slaughterings in the movie were real, which resulted in the movie's being banned in its native Italy.

- There was a rumor that the performers had really been slain, so director Ruggero Deodato had to take the actors with him to the set of an Italian TV show in order to prove that they hadn't been eaten alive.

- The in-film-documentary "The Last Road To Hell", which features several executions, consists of authentic footage supposedly from Uganda.

- Deodato was inspired to make the movie after seeing his son watching the violent news on TV, and thinking about how the journalists focus on the violence.

- This movie has gained the title of the most notorious movie of all-time, holding the world record for the movie banned in the most countries (in almost 60 countries).

- The iconic image for the film shows a "cannibal" girl impaled on a stick. Upon being summoned to court in order to assert that no actors were harmed during production, Deodato explained that the girl simply sat on a bicycle seat attached to the pole's base, while holding a small pointed balsa wood piece in her mouth. The fake blood was then added. Deodato commented that the girl had an unusually calm temperament to be able to remain so still during the filming.

- When Carl Gabriel Yorke (Alan Yates) arrived in the Amazon for shooting, he wasn't given a script or an idea of what the movie was about. As soon as he arrived, director Ruggero Deodato shouted "That's my star! Get him into makeup!" Almost immediately, the first scene they shot was the amputation of one of the character's leg. Yorke later in an interview said while staying there in the jungle, he didn't know whether this film was a Hollywood production or simply a snuff film.

- A large advertisement for Dracula (1979) is visible in the opening shots of the streets of New York City.

- The pistol used by Robert Kerman in the movie was a Smith and Wesson .32

- Director Cameo: [Ruggero Deodato] A man sitting on a blanket outside of the NYU university.

- Though uncaring towards the nature of his film during shooting, Ruggero Deodato now regrets everything he did, mostly the actual animal killings. He said once that he wishes now that he never made the movie.

- Claims of this being a snuff film are still rampant. Even as recently as 1993, authorities at a Birmingham comic fair seized the film on this belief.

- There have been six unofficial sequels to Cannibal Holocaust. Natura contro (1988) was the first movie to call itself Cannibal Holocaust II (in Italy, Turkey, and the UK). Other movies that tried to incorporate themselves with Cannibal Holocaust were Schiave bianche: violenza in Amazzonia (1985) (Cannibal Holocaust 2: The Catherine Miles Story on European DVD), Mangiati vivi (1980) (Cannibal Holocausto 2 on Argentinian DVD), Mondo cannibale (2003) (V) (known as Cannibal Holocaust 2: The Beginning in Japan), and Nella terra dei cannibali (2003) (V) (also known as Cannibal Holocaust 3: Cannibal vs. Commando in Japan). If all these movies were considered actual sequels, Cannibal Holocaust would have four "part two"s in its series.

BLOW-UP, by Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966, italian director but his first british movie, 9.5/10

I like very much this director. and also the mod period. but it's not my fav from him. i don't know i just think the end is little abrupte! but well the corpse is not there anymeore! paranoia!

give a good idea of the neo-realisme genre. but i'm little pruriste and prefer still italian realisme movies..

this is very superficial like comment but i really prefer the fabulous jane birkin as a brown girl..not blonde..haha!

SYNOPSIS :

A photographer who is talented but aimless has photographed violence and pain without feeling any involvement. When he takes pictures of a couple in a park, he finds that he may be witness of a murder.

FUN STUFF ABOUT THE BLOW-UP :

- Reportedly the first British feature film to show full frontal female nudity.

- As a way of bypassing the Production Code (i.e. censors), MGM created "Premiere Productions". This was a dummy company which had no agreement or affiliation with the Production Code and, therefore, did not have to adhere to its standards. MGM did not have to cut the full frontal nudity or other sexually explicit scenes and maintained all rights to the film.

- The film contains a rare performance of The Yardbirds during the period when Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck were both in the band. Jeff Beck would leave a few months later.

- Michelangelo Antonioni's original choice for the rock band was The Velvet Underground but there were problems over their work permits at the time. The In Crowd (who later became Tomorrow) were then offered the cameo but dropped out at the last minute, and the guitar destroyed by Jeff Beck - probably in emulation of The Who's Pete Townshend - was owned by The In Crowd guitarist Steve Howe.

- According to Don McCullin in his autobiography "Unreasonable Behaviour", director Michelangelo Antonioni was unhappy with the colour of the grass in Maryon Park. He had it sprayed green so he could re-shoot the scene.

MY FAV ANTONIONI :

- PROFESSION REPORTER/THE PASSENGER

- LE AMICHE

- L'AVVENTURA

- L'ECLIPSE

RE the Canibal movies: From what I'd heard, italy actually has NO animal cruelty laws, and that's the only reason that they managed to get the movie out with the scenes in it. Some great stuff's come out of italy. I really like City of the Living Dead, that puking out intestines scene is amazing!

For From Beyond, if you've got a bit torrent program, THIS torrent site has an uncut version that aired on TV but was never released on casette/DVD

Also, for good 'nam movies, you should check out The Killing Fields. Bumped Platoon out of the #3 spot on my list (1 + 2 spot you got right though, it's pretty unanimous worldwide that those are the best 2, in that order)

fishead: I watched Braindead for the Nth time this weekend and it still won't stop delivering. The lawnmower scene has to be one of the best in its genre, though the scene I absolutely prefer is one where a zombie punches right through a woman's head, during the Uncle's party...

Betty: Taxi Driver is excellent because the ending is so not the ending most people understand! It's so well done, you don't realize it till much later... Same can be said of Mulholland Drive.

I watch Falling Down at least twice a year. When I feel like a societal reject, I watch it to remind myself that I should NOT snap like Douglas does. Though the coca-cola moment happens way too often...
I'm feeling yog-soggothic right now..

It WAS good...I don't know. I still prefer seeing the fist come out from the girls' mouth.

Lionel's mother in the custard scene is also so very sick. :D

hehe the whole thing is really amazing! I just hope that there's some element of truth in the rumors that Peter Jackson wants to take a break from big-budget studio movies and do a new horror/zombie movie where he can do whatever the fuck he wants!
I'm feeling sleepy right now..

I hadn't clicked the link. I see, now.

Bad Taste was awesome. The open head wound, the brain, ugh. Nice, though inferior to Dead Alive.

Talking again about cannibal movies the best one that I have seen to date is Cannibal the Musical from the boys who bring you south park, it was shot years before south park was even thought of and it is funny as hell, it's their first film ever but one of their best if you like that style of humour, it's a rare find and you might need to special order it, but if you get a copy hang on to it, Parker has put a moratorium on the film making it even harder to get. Check it out if you get a chance, let me know what you think...

Falling down is awesome...DeadAlive as well (one of my favorites) - though I haven't seen the other BrainDead movie Fish is talking [ about...Ca ] the Musical is also great, but as far as cannibal movies go, for script and not gore, I really like Ravenous, dir. by Antonia Bird, though it's very different than the old classic Italian style of the genre...on another note, has anyone seen the Asian film GUZU ? It looks twisted and I was wondering if it's worth the rental... ...

there are a few, I try and stay out of the big stores, Queen video is the best in town for hard to find, or for independent stuff, Video Dog is another good spot, and you don't sound bitchy, I understand it must be hard to type with the cuffs on, I can pick the locks if you lost the key, or bail you out :)

On the topic of cannibalism the danish film The Green Butchers is a good laugh.

Na: Gôzu will leave you scratching your head, but is quite worthwhile for its almost non-stop surreal humour. Aikawa Shô is perfectly ridiculous in the main role.
