could someone explain what this is referring to:

"l'impérialisme anglo-saxon qui sévit dans l'ouest de Montréal".

what is considered the west of the island? west downtown? west island? and what exactly is mean by anglo-saxon imperialism?

"C'est comme la commission Bouchard-Taylor. Bullshit monumental pour faire passer les québécois pour des racistes.
Et c'est pour quand la commission fédérale sur la réalité non-Anglophone au Canada?"

...fuckin seriously.

you can only use your STCUM bus card if you bought a special one that allows train access. they usually have ZONE 1 (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5) printed in big letters on them and they are only good for travel within the zone you've bought it for. i think from beaconsfield to downtown is zone 2.
otherwise you have to buy a ticket before you get on from an automated machine at the station.
if you dont have the correct fare the stormtroopers will crowd around you, have a big powertrip and then give you a 110$ ticket. they dont ALWAYS pass, but they pass by often enough and randomly enough to make it a gamble. you can't talk your way out of it and you can't pay them the fare on the spot.
if you dont pay the ticket you'll get a letter in the mail in a couple of years informing you that you can either pay the deliquent ticket au PC (plus interest and service charges) or you can spend the weekend in jail. if you claim you dont have ID, (i shit you not) they will actually whip out a phone and try and get you to give them the number of someone who can vouch for your identity, then theyll call that person, inform them that theyre on the train with you and you havent paid the fare or whatnot, and then obtain your info from them (usually theyll call relatives or an employer). and if their attempt at criminalizing and defaming you to your loved ones doesnt work, then theyll hold you and call the cops. at this point, especially if you have guns or drugs on you, youre fucked.

Criticism
The Socialist Party (UK) described it as "a mouthpiece of international financial capital". Economist James K. Galbraith said the publication follows a pro-globalisation agenda. The Guardian has described it as neo-liberal. James Fallows argued that the newspaper suffers from British class snobbery, pretentiousness, and simplistic argumentation -- and that the editorial line is often contradicted by actual news stories. Andrew Sullivan complained that it uses “marketing genius” to make up for deficiencies in analysis and original reporting, resulting in a “a kind of Reader's Digest for the upper classes.”

In addition, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham remarked that "The Economist doesn’t even attempt to do original reporting." Elsewhere, the "newspaper" is said to have an “omniscient tone and pedantry." Editorial anonymity, said by the editor to reflect “a collaborative effort,” is said to hide the youth and inexperience of those writing articles. "The magazine is written by young people pretending to be old people," according to Michael Lewis. “If American readers got a look at the pimply complexions of their economic gurus, they would cancel their subscriptions in droves."

I have been keeping track of this film before and after it's release, I have also taken into account how muslims regard this short film as "offensive". Which is funny because, to say the least, all the footage in fitna is not comprised of sketches or reenactments, all of it was real life. So if muslims find this film offensive then it is safe to assume that they find their own religious beliefs offensive(according to well established facts and this reuters video: [ www.reuters.com ]

Islam is definitely NOT a religion of peace. The way muslims picture peace is if the whole world submits to allah, only then the whole world will descend into a state of tranquility and bliss. I would beg to differ, because if you're a homosexual, then you'd probably be hanged, or if you're a woman, in that case your genitalia will be mutilated so that you won't be able to feel orgasms and you will be forced into practical slavery for the rest of your life, if your muslim husband won't hack your head off your shoulders because he say you speaking to another man(lets suppose a passer by asking for directions), then you will probably very slowly die of some sexually transmitted disease your loving husband gave you in a third world country that has barely any care for it's people. Theres tons of other injustices found in the koran that I will not bother naming, but these 2 examples should give you a clear idea of what the koran is all about. But to further enlighten you, I will have you know that the majority of the stories in the koran are negative, there are positive ones, but unfortunately the koran lists all the stories not in their respective chronological order but starting from longest to the shortest. Longest being concentrated on all the counts that encourages muslims to kill infidels(anyone who is not a muslim!) and the positive ones talking about heaven after they've commited jihad. Also telling the parents of jihadists to be happy given the *fact* that their offspring is in heaven.

With that being said, islam is like a cancer, it's only purpose is to spread and colonize the host body.
There are 2 types of muslims, the bad kind, the ones who want to live peacefully among other cultures and religions without trying to enforce the word of allah onto others, and there are the *good* kind who follow the "teachings" of the koran and blow themselves up. Unfortunately the majority of muslims are good, and are ready to strike down anyone who does not share their beliefs in spirit of their prophet mohammad.

If islam did not exist, we would all be living in a safer place. Whoever disagrees with this idea is an islamist extremist terrorist and should be wiped off the face of the earth to prove this theory correct. Hell, abolish ALL of religion just to be fair with muslims. I have done thorough research in regards to religion in general and I have come to the conclusion that ALL OF IT is made of LIES and spread by propaganda. There is no word of god, as far as I'm concerned there is no god at all. There is just men using the idea of god to kill and oppress other men. Let's face it, religion is the root of all evil. Whether you're muslim, chritian, or a jew... the people of your religion have without a doubt used it's word negative in negative ways. Because that is the nature of men and there is no denying it. Absolute power corrupts absolutely: Hitler and Stalin are a set of fine examples to support this claim.

Now to further expand the idea that god does not exist(or if he did exist he probably wouldn't even know you existed, let alone care to instruct you on how to live your life) let's consider the size of our cosmos. Whenever somebody is looking through a telescope into space at a far away galaxy, they are looking BACK IN TIME. Because those galaxies are(were) billions or even trillions of light years away from ours. A light year is a year spent traveling at the speed of light. The speed of light is equivalent 299 792 458 MILES per SECOND.There are 31 556 926 seconds in a year. that comes to 946 052 841 264 108 miles in one year. Multiply that number by billions or trillions of years that and you still will not have any idea how far they are. This concept is pretty difficult to grasp at first, but the far off galaxies you're looking at through the telescope no longer exist. All the stars that emitted the light that you are seeing today, have long been sucked up into a blackhole and converted into a dense state of nothingness, or maybe transported to another point in space and time through the 4th dimension. This is something we may never find out, unlike the existence(or lack of) of god.

So now that you have acquired a better understanding just how mindblowingly huge the space is, we can finally move on to the idea of other intelligent life forms spread across countless planets gravitationally locked into numberless galaxies throughout the grandness the cosmos. Men is NOT the only intelligent life form in the universe. We have no clear evidence of other life as of now(however rare they may be), but we have very strong evidence that suggests it does exist. The biggest proof being ourselves. We humans are not fallouts from the garden of eden or images of god. We are products of millions of years of evolution and natural selection. Our planet, our sun, we, and everything we know came from space. We are build of atoms that binded with each other to create other kinds of atoms(elements) which in turn binded to create molecules and that is the origin of life. Now the question here is, do the other people who live on other planets, believe in the same gods as we do, or did their courses of history abolished religion because they realized it's dangers. I would be led to believe so when we take into account that there are millions of other galaxies which formed billions of years before ours. Some civilizations have undoubtedly reached their evolutionary peak and understood that all we have is this conscious life that we are living right now. Past that there is nothing else, oblivion. This idea disputes every single religion and fortunately can be backed up with scietifical facts, unlike the religious counterpart which relies on beliefs of a book that has been written by hostile power hungry men who claimed to be prophets.

BLASPHEMY! They were not prophets: mohammad, moses and jesus(and all the others) are propaganda selling low life liars who used bribery and drugs to force people into following them in their crusades for power. Now centuries later, and uncounted deaths of innocent people, our planet is STILL plagued with the cancer that is religion. Eating away at our life source every single day. All I wanna know is how long until some jihadi resistance group aqcuires a nuclear weapon and blows our tiny pale blue dot out of it's existence in the name of a none existent god. there is no doubt in my mind this WILL happen one day when a some muslim terrorist warlord realizes that he cannot make the whole world accept allah. In his very ignorant mind, he thinks he'll be going to heaven and savoring some very fine mutilated virgin vaginas for "liberating" infidels.

JERUSALEM - U.S. Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice is being hailed by Israeli and Palestinian leaders as an international hero after securing peace between the two countries.

Rice, who was meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in an attempt to end the bitter, decades-long feud between the two neighbouring countries, quickly found success.

Olmert doled out praise for Rice. "Condy (Rice) was great. She helped us realize our commonalities and forget our differences. I never would have thought I'd have so much in common with Abby (Abbas). Apparently we both love moded-out rides and listening to Linkin Park. Who knew?"

Abbas described how Rice was able foster a relationship between himself and Olmert. "First we did trust exercises. I'd fall and Olly (Olmert) would catch me, then we'd change and I'd catch. Next, she sat us down and told us to let our true feelings out. We shared some tears, and then, all of a sudden we were hugging. Condy is a miracle worker."

Olmert and Abbas, the new "best buds", left the negotiating table trading high-fives. They were said to be headed out on the town, where they would "cruise for babes in Olly's Civic."

This was the latest in a number of highly successful peace negotiations for Rice, who is said to be a shoo-in for the next Nobel Peace Prize.

this is an interesting, related counter-take on all this, by an african economist

SPIEGEL INTERVIEW WITH AFRICAN ECONOMICS EXPERT
"For God's Sake, Please Stop the Aid!"

The Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem.
SPIEGEL:

Mr. Shikwati, the G8 summit at Gleneagles is about to beef up the development aid for Africa...

Shikwati: ... for God's sake, please just stop.

SPIEGEL: Stop? The industrialized nations of the West want to eliminate hunger and poverty.

Shikwati: Such intentions have been damaging our continent for the past 40 years. If the industrial nations really want to help the Africans, they should finally terminate this awful aid. The countries that have collected the most development aid are also the ones that are in the worst shape. Despite the billions that have poured in to Africa, the continent remains poor.

SPIEGEL: Do you have an explanation for this paradox?

Shikwati: Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid.

SPIEGEL: Even in a country like Kenya, people are starving to death each year. Someone has got to help them.

Shikwati: But it has to be the Kenyans themselves who help these people. When there's a drought in a region of Kenya, our corrupt politicians reflexively cry out for more help. This call then reaches the United Nations World Food Program -- which is a massive agency of apparatchiks who are in the absurd situation of, on the one hand, being dedicated to the fight against hunger while, on the other hand, being faced with unemployment were hunger actually eliminated. It's only natural that they willingly accept the plea for more help. And it's not uncommon that they demand a little more money than the respective African government originally requested. They then forward that request to their headquarters, and before long, several thousands tons of corn are shipped to Africa ...

SPIEGEL: ... corn that predominantly comes from highly-subsidized European and American farmers ...

Shikwati: ... and at some point, this corn ends up in the harbor of Mombasa. A portion of the corn often goes directly into the hands of unsrupulous politicians who then pass it on to their own tribe to boost their next election campaign. Another portion of the shipment ends up on the black market where the corn is dumped at extremely low prices. Local farmers may as well put down their hoes right away; no one can compete with the UN's World Food Program. And because the farmers go under in the face of this pressure, Kenya would have no reserves to draw on if there actually were a famine next year. It's a simple but fatal cycle.

SPIEGEL: If the World Food Program didn't do anything, the people would starve.

Shikwati: I don't think so. In such a case, the Kenyans, for a change, would be forced to initiate trade relations with Uganda or Tanzania, and buy their food there. This type of trade is vital for Africa. It would force us to improve our own infrastructure, while making national borders -- drawn by the Europeans by the way -- more permeable. It would also force us to establish laws favoring market economy.

SPIEGEL: Would Africa actually be able to solve these problems on its own?

Shikwati: Of course. Hunger should not be a problem in most of the countries south of the Sahara. In addition, there are vast natural resources: oil, gold, diamonds. Africa is always only portrayed as a continent of suffering, but most figures are vastly exaggerated. In the industrial nations, there's a sense that Africa would go under without development aid. But believe me, Africa existed before you Europeans came along. And we didn't do all that poorly either.

SPIEGEL: But AIDS didn't exist at that time.

Shikwati: If one were to believe all the horrorifying reports, then all Kenyans should actually be dead by now. But now, tests are being carried out everywhere, and it turns out that the figures were vastly exaggerated. It's not three million Kenyans that are infected. All of the sudden, it's only about one million. Malaria is just as much of a problem, but people rarely talk about that.

SPIEGEL: And why's that?

Shikwati: AIDS is big business, maybe Africa's biggest business. There's nothing else that can generate as much aid money as shocking figures on AIDS. AIDS is a political disease here, and we should be very skeptical.

SPIEGEL: The Americans and Europeans have frozen funds previously pledged to Kenya. The country is too corrupt, they say.

Shikwati: I am afraid, though, that the money will still be transfered before long. After all, it has to go somewhere. Unfortunately, the Europeans' devastating urge to do good can no longer be countered with reason. It makes no sense whatsoever that directly after the new Kenyan government was elected -- a leadership change that ended the dictatorship of Daniel arap Mois -- the faucets were suddenly opened and streams of money poured into the country.

SPIEGEL: Such aid is usually earmarked for a specific objective, though.

Shikwati: That doesn't change anything. Millions of dollars earmarked for the fight against AIDS are still stashed away in Kenyan bank accounts and have not been spent. Our politicians were overwhelmed with money, and they try to siphon off as much as possible. The late tyrant of the Central African Republic, Jean Bedel Bokassa, cynically summed it up by saying: "The French government pays for everything in our country. We ask the French for money. We get it, and then we waste it."

(Former Central African Republic leader Jean-Bedel Bokassa: "We ask the French for money. We get it, and then we waste it.")

SPIEGEL: In the West, there are many compassionate citizens wanting to help Africa. Each year, they donate money and pack their old clothes into collection bags ...

Shikwati: ... and they flood our markets with that stuff. We can buy these donated clothes cheaply at our so-called Mitumba markets. There are Germans who spend a few dollars to get used Bayern Munich or Werder Bremen jerseys, in other words, clothes that that some German kids sent to Africa for a good cause. After buying these jerseys, they auction them off at Ebay and send them back to Germany -- for three times the price. That's insanity ...

SPIEGEL: ... and hopefully an exception.

Shikwati: Why do we get these mountains of clothes? No one is freezing here. Instead, our tailors lose their livlihoods. They're in the same position as our farmers. No one in the low-wage world of Africa can be cost-efficient enough to keep pace with donated products. In 1997, 137,000 workers were employed in Nigeria's textile industry. By 2003, the figure had dropped to 57,000. The results are the same in all other areas where overwhelming helpfulness and fragile African markets collide.

SPIEGEL: Following World War II, Germany only managed to get back on its feet because the Americans poured money into the country through the Marshall Plan. Wouldn't that qualify as successful development aid?

Shikwati: In Germany's case, only the destroyed infrastructure had to be repaired. Despite the economic crisis of the Weimar Republic, Germany was a highly- industrialized country before the war. The damages created by the tsunami in Thailand can also be fixed with a little money and some reconstruction aid. Africa, however, must take the first steps into modernity on its own. There must be a change in mentality. We have to stop perceiving ourselves as beggars. These days, Africans only perceive themselves as victims. On the other hand, no one can really picture an African as a businessman. In order to change the current situation, it would be helpful if the aid organizations were to pull out.

SPIEGEL: If they did that, many jobs would be immediately lost ...

Shikwati: ... jobs that were created artificially in the first place and that distort reality. Jobs with foreign aid organizations are, of course, quite popular, and they can be very selective in choosing the best people. When an aid organization needs a driver, dozens apply for the job. And because it's unacceptable that the aid worker's chauffeur only speaks his own tribal language, an applicant is needed who also speaks English fluently -- and, ideally, one who is also well mannered. So you end up with some African biochemist driving an aid worker around, distributing European food, and forcing local farmers out of their jobs. That's just crazy!

SPIEGEL: The German government takes pride in precisely monitoring the recipients of its funds.

Shikwati: And what's the result? A disaster. The German government threw money right at Rwanda's president Paul Kagame. This is a man who has the deaths of a million people on his conscience -- people that his army killed in the neighboring country of Congo.

SPIEGEL: What are the Germans supposed to do?

Shikwati: If they really want to fight poverty, they should completely halt development aid and give Africa the opportunity to ensure its own survival. Currently, Africa is like a child that immediately cries for its babysitter when something goes wrong. Africa should stand on its own two feet.

thank you, o bastion of the obvious....

haaaaaaaahhahaa ohhhh man......actually moondancer youre right, you DIDNT make authortitative claims about israel. at least in this thread. sorry for pointing the gun at the wrong person.
"I never said anything anti-israel. You are the one who is being a hypcorite here. Why is it that when we critisize everyone else it's a valid argument but when we critisize israel it's anti-israel?"

criticism:
passing judgment upon the qualities or merits of anything, especially the passing of unfavorable judgment, fault-finding, censure.

anti:
Combining prefix denoting ‘against’, ‘reverse’ or ‘in opposition to’

therefore when you criticize something, you are passing unfavorable judgement upon it; you are against it.

i'm sorry, where in this thread did i call someone anti-semitic again? i read over the thread but i guess my monitor isnt working properly and not displaying all the text that you seem to see on yours.

"No I am saying that everyone should be criticized equally."

yet pretty much all that appears in threads like this (nevermind that the thread started out about iran and had nothing to do with israel in the 1st place) is criticism of israel. whats up with that? as paragons of equality, you guys sure heap an unequal amount of criticism on israel. that is my observation here. there are no judgements or accusations in those words. YOU can take it to mean whatever you WANT it to mean (since you undoubtedly will anyways).

1. I never said its more important to avoid being a hypocrite than to help people out. I'm only saying that before you start making authoritative claims about what is right and what is wrong in the world, you should consider more than just what some pro left-wing media or history source has to say.

2. furthermore, who exactly are you helping out by sitting at your computer and spewing out hypocritical anti-israel rhetoric?

3. you seem to be saying that youre avoiding supporting cruelty by being against israel; that this is your way of "helping out". this would either imply a) you don't view palestinian rocket attacks and suicide attacks on israeli civilians as cruel, or b) that you're again a hypocrite, by condemning the cruelty of one bunch of people, while keeping your mouth shut (or outright agreeing with; i dont see much of a difference between the two) about the cruelty of another which happens to be directed against the people you are condemning.

4. continue criticizing at will, by all means! i dont expect to convince you of ANYTHING, let alone your own logical shortcomings. ((which would beg the question: why do i even bother posting here?

sure you don't HAVE to explain, it just necessarily paints you as a hypocrite, for choosing to live in a country that was founded on unjust occupation and brutal subjugation of its native people, thereby tacitly supporting that subjugation, but criticising another country that you feel are doing the same thing.
yeah it happened a long time ago, the deed is done, so to speak, and there's no going back at this point. the same thing can be said for israel. the deed is done, they arent going anywhere, so get used to it.
furthermore, the fact that there are still "palestinians" "under occupation" in the "disputed territories", can be mirrored here in canada by the fact that the only territories natives have left are pathetically small reserves. it is a comparable situation. if i were an aboriginal "canadian", i would consider the entire geographical area of canada to still be under "occupation" by alien forces.

it seems to me that bilingual french quebecers stand to benefit the most if quebec were ever to separate from canada
