I've got a whole bunch of tapes that Out Of Bound sent me (probably in '95 or '96)... as well as mixes by Bliss and Gnat from the same period.
Last I heard Gnat had moved to Toronto and was working as a lawyer... |

hey I saw on the hullabaloo forum that there has been a "tragic" hullabaloo... something happened but I have no idea what is it and I don't want to ask this on the official board.
anyone knows what happened back there? |

Our scene is at risk. Bad media, drug abuse, and really shitty producers and DJs have exploited our scene. I just got back from TO and they are having parties like it's 1999 there. Their scene improved as soon as Vinyl Syndicate started representing internationally (1999-2001), much the way montreal's awesome scene arose when Tiga started being a contender in 1994-5. DnB is massive in TO, and getting bigger than Hip Hop. House is the massive sound of Montreal. We have to decide if our music is what drives the scene or if it's the drugs. The consequence of a successful scene is larger parties, more people, then more drugs. The scene gets commercially exploited, then it bottoms out. I hope it's the music, but if it's drugs that people come for I'm afraid our scene is trivia for the year 2020. I think there's only a few massive druggies left and I think they are outweighed by the talent I've seen here.
Time for Montreal's Renaissance. |

Mike i agree almost all the way ; nice one ..
but just a detail ; -Their scene improved as soon as Vinyl Syndicate started representing internationally (1999-2001)- the funniest is that those peeps from Vinyl Syndicate, even thought very talented as producers and dj's , were all thugged-out-attitude badmen .. got booked a few times in Montreal, got paid in advance and stuff ; and never showed up .. it happened a few times .. thugs i say , thugs so now imagine the will, talent and skills added to a real music passion and some real nice people ...now it can go further ... |

Of course TO does drugs! And they're DnB scene is like a bunch of pitbulls without leashes. But it's like that because it's successful. They are where we were in 1999/2000 where 514 was dropping massive 10,000+ person parties and everyone was on everything. Like any civilization, it is indulgence that leads to destruction. We can't change it, we can only adapt to it.
The TO parties I went ot this weekend were full of drugs in quantities I'm not even remotely familliar with. I'm really glad it isn't a Vinyla Syndicate scene here. I wouldn't have moved here from the TDot if it was. The montreal scene is like the more spititual rasta-zen crew and I'm proud to work within it. I would rather fail and starve in Montreal than find all the success of my dreams in Toronto. |

You're dead on with a lot of your comments, but I can honestly say I wish our DnB/jungle scene was a fraction of what Tdot has. Or even if it was like our scene here back in 2000/2001. And Soul Trey... awesome thread! It's crazy some of the big name superstars we had at our parties that were virtual nobodies back in the day. |

How many photos do you have kimochi... I have a scanner at work which I could use if it's not millions of photos. I'm sure other people have scanners also ;)... You can buy one for 49$ now! |

I'll make a section on ravewave for the oldschool scene if anyone wanted to work on it... Noah - This is your scene, love and respect it and it will grow. Disrespect it and it will go. Noah, if you provide the server space, i don't mind working on it. I have tons of flyers and some pictures from the start of montreal rave culture. I think if would complement Ravewave nicely. It would take a while tho, i would have to track down other lifers and get their pespective. posted by Le D
I think that discutions on the oldschool scene could help us improve the actual scene. start improving by getting rid of glowsticks. You don't need them. And guys shouldn't wear pacifiers.. chew gum if you're grinding your teeth. Kimochi, check tes messages. As for Toronto, i never went to a party in TO. There was never a bus trip to TO. I dont know how the scene was it like there but there were enough negative stories to discourage us to make the trip. As the difference between Toronto and Montreal, Toronto has this strange need to competed with other American cities. Being the largest canadian city, everything has to be bigger... you tend to lose perspective. Montreal just went it's own way. The 'laisser-faire" attitude. However, the scene grew.. and it just got saturated and diluted. |
