hmmm, I'm really scared of headphones but I'll consider the option. if there are really great enough headphones for serious production of bass-driven music, with a good enough range to allow mixing down the tune with precision, it might be worth it. I'd probably get one in the 250-350$ range as I try to avoid crap :P

i dont really get the 25 VSTis/100 inserts thing either..

do you use group tracks? (lead bus, drum bus, perc bus...)

shouldnt need that many compressors in that case. should also be able to go with one reverb, one delay, one chorus on the lead/vocal bus..

for distortion antares tube is really simple and doesnt use much ressources.

and for your layers.. are you using all the oscillators on one VST? I mean with one z3ta alone you can achieve really phat leads for not much cpu, add a v-station and a nexus to that and you already have a quite nice layer in only 3 VSTs.

and for additionnal inserts, if you EQ/compress drums while producing a tune, you should export those new drums, and use them without inserts.. same sound. same with your kick layers if you do that.

anyways i know you know what youre doing pascal, but hopefully some producer with mad lags will find some useful tips in this thread.

@dainja : yeah you and your house in ottawa... tssk :P

@screwhead : time of the day has no effect for me :( they're alwaaays there.. and I could relocate my PC, but then I'd piss them off somewhere else. right now i'm over their office, thought it would be ok, but no. living room or their bedroom would probably be just worse.

@hostone : yeh i have the sony mdr-7506, used to use them a lot, but i dunno. now that I use decent speakers I just can't look back. getting 0 bass in headphones, and when i push up the volume a bit to really get a good listen to my high frequencies, my ear get tired in no time.. and those speakers were pretty expensive too, would be a shame to let them rot :P

Are all producers using headphones, monitors at low volume or own a personal studio?

Was just informed 15 minutes that I've been pissing off my neighbors for 4 months (thanks for telling me that now) and I really don't consider that I produce at a "unreasonable" volume but the boom boom boom kickdrum from my monitors (don't even have a sub) still seems to bother them a lot.

I also try to produce at reasonable hours but I don't think it's enough for them who are retired.

I really like to produce at home, don't want to rent a studio or stuff like that, so I guess I might just have to move in July. You guys know some places in Montreal where it's possible to jam hard and live peacefully at the same time and at a reasonable cost?

Let me know how your setup works and I'll add, I hate producing in headphones, my ears get tired really quickly and I prefer using my Adams by farrrrr.

honestly I think too much is not enough.. i never render any synth, and even with layering, effects, distortions, eqs, compressors, i never get any lag on my dual core... maybe my shit is too minimalist lol

wally just get another version randomly, some will work fine on certain sequencers, some won't, trial and error unfortunately

I agree that albino seriously kicks ass, but I wouldn't replace massive for any reason!

ehh most of the happy hardcore, hard trance and freeform djs know Kevin Energy and the Nu Energy Collective.

and their releases are played in the sets of MAtRiCks, Metzen, Lone Star, Samwise, Deadfunk, Smartyz, Recur, Kurse, Moonlite and back in the day were played by Tyrant, Juniah, Antheriel, Fucktop, and I'm probably forgetting a bunch others and the whole Quebec city crew.

and some of our best djs of those genres are already preparing their bios to submit it, so I think this post is completely appropriate here. they reach their audience.

and finally yes, Nu Energy Records has been around for possibly longer than the Nu-NRG genre and is run by the people who invented the freeform genre, so no relation here.

once again, thanks for making us look like jerks in front of one of the labels/djs we respect the most.

that's what he said.

basically orbit1 and milo are on a tour all around america right now. this weekend was for montreal and they ended paying their transport and expenses from their pocket to headline a party.

i wonder if any other djs got paid? cause usually you pay your headliners first. montreal's reputation with happy hardcore headliners just took a solid hit..

junodownload, trackitdown, hardbeatstore, imodownload, beatport..

usually need to check all of them, different policies make it harder to get bootlegs on most site but imodownload has them for example.. hardbeatstore has some exclusive in hardcore/hard trance.

I like the way junodownload and trackitdown always have a fairly nice catalogue, not tooooo much crap like imodownload..

beatport FTW for commercial stuff, electrohouse, dubstep..

Update » BobGratton wrote on Wed Oct 7, 2009 @ 6:35pm
Normally I first check the Top 10s.. to see if I like anything...

Then I go in new releases and I check what came out in the past 3-4 months... I rarely buy older tracks.
