is there any cheap setup other than mixing on the computer or buying behringer products to :

1. get the cool effects from the DJM-800

2. have 4 channels

3. have a controllable crossfader slope

4. have a pitch that's at least precise at 0.05%? (cdjs)

??

getting fed up with DJ gear (2x cdj100s, 2x sl-1200, gemini 626 mixer) but I don't want to spend 3500$ for a home dj studio, production costs enough already.

EDIT : I'm asking this but I already know I'm doomed.

I think Powercore is pretty outdated. Considering the card and the software, you might be better off with a Virus TI Snow (1300$). It's tiny and can be completely controlled from the PC. 10-50 voices depending on the complexity of the patches you use.

the Virus TI can be operated like a VSTi. pretty much the best bet for a software junkie!

meh.. reaktor is freaking complicated, still need to learn that one..

i'd say for hard trance (and yes, usually it's a producer secret but fuck it, most people never use the advices you give them!)

VSTi
¯¯¯¯
Nexus (tranceee)
Z3ta+ (more tranceeee)
V-Station (tranceeetranceee)
Massive (all-around cool sounds, trance, electro, etc)
Korg Legacy (tranceezz)
Korg Legacy Digital Collection (cool instrumental sounds)
Discovery (not bad at all!)
Sylenth1 (interesting)
Gladiator (interesting as well)
Blue (quite nice trance)
Atmosphere (pads)
Trilogy (basses and other electro-ish phatness)
Stylus (wicked loops)
Albino 3 (my favorite for basslines)
Kontakt (best/easiest sampler.. must-have... can also work as a loop slicer)
Battery (drum sampler.. however it's not necessary, myself I stopped using it)

VST
¯¯¯
Waves Diamond Bundle (meh, just get it till you find better)
d.blue glitch (overused, but if you're creative you can manage cool shit)
Kjaerhus plug-ins [ www.kjaerhusaudio.com ] check out their free stuff, nice compressors, EQ and more)
Sonnox Oxford Dynamics Native (great compression and more)
TC Native Bundle (more compression shnizz)
Antares Tube (amazing distortion)
Quadrafuzz (amazing distortion (cubase only))
Antares Autotune (become a singer in a few clicks)
Voxengo Analogflux Suite (reverbs, chorus, delay, shit you neeed)
Orange Vocoder (r0b0tz invasion)
Camelphat (wicked LFO effects and more)
PSP84 (nice delay)

... and there's much more ... but I don't have cubase in front of me, those are the first ones I can think of. hours of fun guaranteed.

feel free to check out the myspace for some clipz, my hardcore is pretty trancey and made with most of these tools : [ www.myspace.com ] (add me to your friends)

basically around 300$ you will have a external sound card that is NOT m-audio, that won't break, that will have the output you need for monitors, a input for a mic, and you won't have latency issues

Actually, I do produce at home! :)

But seriously, as much as I'm sure you're right about pretty much everything you've said, I don't think PCs or Cubase deserve all the bad publicity they get. Not anymore anyways.

And the Firebox is alright! It's stable, sounds good and is cheap! If you're not recording guitars or stuff like that, you'll be alright! Has enough inputs for most electronic music! I personally use a TC Electronics Konnekt 8, only reason I'm not recommending it is because I was told a lot of people have compatibility issues with it, but I personally don't!

Cool. I know exactly how you feel. What I meant was exactly that... mess around long enough to know what you want exactly. Everyone has to move to the real thing at some point! If I can help you out with anything, let me know!

For trance/hard dance... hehe you really don't need gear, that's a good start. High quality samples + the best trance VSTis and you have all you need to sound like the pros out there. :)

^absolutely agrees with Mutante^

I would say the external firewire card Presonus Firebox is most likely in your price range and will be everything you need for a really long time. For monitors, it really depend how much you are ready to spend.

And yeah your current machine is shit for making music, that's the first thing you should change. I'm personally against the idea of getting a Mac except if you really never use a computer at all except for making music. First, a good PC with Cubase will do the job perfectly, second, if you wanna download some VSTs illegally, well the PC versions are nearly always cracked first. Some VSTs are simply never cracked for Mac. I don't openly support piracy but really, at 100-500$ per VST, it piles up fast, and right now, you're not even making a penny with your tracks. Also, let's remember, most games and random applications don't work on Mac. Think about it because you'll be stuck with that PC for a while and Macs are SHIT-EXPENSIVE!

If you really want the new PC, the new sound card and the monitors altogether, it's alright, but you should consider focusing on practicing and learning rather than spending from there.

I know I probably sound really annoying with the "don't spend too much" line today, but seriously, I know too many aspiring producers who actually never became real producers but bought a lot of shit thinking it would allow them to go over what was slowing them down. (and it did not work)

I'm just saying I think people should not force on themselves the "producer status" by buying gear.

So what kind of music are you gonna produce?

software all the way when you start. try and do good stuff while spending as little as possible.

do not worry, you will know it when it's time to invest in hardware. it might never even happen! but you will spend money less foolishly and make better use of your gear if you get it only when you actually feel you need it.

and no, buying stuff will not increase your motivation/capacity to spend energy into making music. if you really love it, you'll make tracks with whatever you got.

also, you will not save time with gear... maybe some CPU but you will not produce faster.

of course there are good benefits from gear, like better sounds and possibilities but in the long run just like software, it depends if you are good with the product. a lot of people can get amazing sounds from software synths, just like a lot of people have no clue how to make anything good with a hardware synths.

anyways, good luck whatever you do!

P.S. that's a very general answer to a very general question, don't flame! :)
