Producing At Home ( Noise )

Are all producers using headphones, monitors at low volume or own a personal studio?
Was just informed 15 minutes that I've been pissing off my neighbors for 4 months (thanks for telling me that now) and I really don't consider that I produce at a "unreasonable" volume but the boom boom boom kickdrum from my monitors (don't even have a sub) still seems to bother them a lot. I also try to produce at reasonable hours but I don't think it's enough for them who are retired. I really like to produce at home, don't want to rent a studio or stuff like that, so I guess I might just have to move in July. You guys know some places in Montreal where it's possible to jam hard and live peacefully at the same time and at a reasonable cost? Let me know how your setup works and I'll add, I hate producing in headphones, my ears get tired really quickly and I prefer using my Adams by farrrrr. |

I use headphones for my asshole neighbors, no choice. Noise cancelling headphones are your best bet if you dont wanna drive them insane. And this spring I'm looking to rent a basement apartment preferably in a cement building so I can drive some bass out that mafk |

I've got a set of KRK Rokit6 for about a year now and I've never had any complaints.. I guess it really depends on the hours you produce at and where your setup is located..
my setup is in my room, and most people aren't in their bedroom during the day.. I'd imagine if I was making music in the living room, the neighbors upstairs would have more of a chance to complain about it because they spend most of the day in there..
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now.. |

@dainja : yeah you and your house in ottawa... tssk :P
@screwhead : time of the day has no effect for me :( they're alwaaays there.. and I could relocate my PC, but then I'd piss them off somewhere else. right now i'm over their office, thought it would be ok, but no. living room or their bedroom would probably be just worse. @hostone : yeh i have the sony mdr-7506, used to use them a lot, but i dunno. now that I use decent speakers I just can't look back. getting 0 bass in headphones, and when i push up the volume a bit to really get a good listen to my high frequencies, my ear get tired in no time.. and those speakers were pretty expensive too, would be a shame to let them rot :P |

Yeh they are, he needs something with noise cancellation and self amplification, then you'll hear the bass nice n clear without boosting your master too high. I use sony's too, :S really bad for bass.

hmmm, I'm really scared of headphones but I'll consider the option. if there are really great enough headphones for serious production of bass-driven music, with a good enough range to allow mixing down the tune with precision, it might be worth it. I'd probably get one in the 250-350$ range as I try to avoid crap :P |

Haha I kind of agree, but damn, I pay the rent to these neighbors :P
it's a duplex building, peaceful area... but yeah there has to be some possible compromise. I guess it's mostly these evenings when I lost track of time and ended up working on a mix at 10pm that pissed them off! |

Try the Audio Technica M50s
Eugene has those and they're fucking amazing. Super detailed the whole spectrum and really flat. He also has AKG-240s (which are studio standard) yet we both prefer his M50s. They're only like 150$. |

I tend to say that open headphones are less tiering than closed... also more comfortable... but you do get every bit of outside sound coming in and vice versa
and yeah... if you got adams... I can understand how using headphones to produce is not really the kinda choice you wanna take... fucking neighbors
I'm feeling lovely right now.. |

I love AKG K240 for acoustic stuff.
I love ATH M50 for metal and electronic stuff. but my favorite all arounds would be the Sennheiser HD-650, the Sony MDR7506 and the Audio-Technica ATH M30.

I produce EVERYTHING in my headphones, then crank it the next day, and adjust any parts that sound off.
I can produce 8 hrs straight with my headphones, it gets tiring at the end, but im used to it, and they sound great, and are light and comfy.... i got some Fostex T20RP's, they were only 100$, but the 60's have a wider freq range for an extra 50$ (freq's that i cut out anyways) p.s. Fuck Neighbours/Roomates/Cats/Dogs!!!!!! I hate em all, they stink!
I'm feeling like a sketchbook! right now.. |

Senheiser hd600 are some of the better earphones you can buy. They are quite flat and translate well to studio monitors. I suggest you stay away from closed dj earphones if you are in a quiet environment.

They tend to have a less exagerated bass than the HD-600 and the difference is so smarrr. I'm rearry happy wif'em
