I just read this whole thread and I saw: accusations of racism, vinyl vs. cd wars, money arguing, insult of music genres, insult of promoters, some mild threats, and then a total resolution of the problem.

Best thread of 2007?

N'ah, not me, I'm especially bad at that task. When I rave, I'm too lost in hyperspace to speak to people and promote parties. I tried, but doesn't work. Not the social type I guess.. ;)

hey i did mean to insult when i said that some djs have fans and they can just play music, no need to do nothing else... it's just reality... those djs have probably done a lot of work on promoting themselves too in the past, and they've built a name being up to the expectations.
anyways, i think promoting your gig is still part of being an dj, but never as much as what the promoter's work is of course...

Thanks for those explanations Jack my man.. i hope people now better understand the situation..

and i dunno about the whole "dj's should promote and bring 3x what they are getting paid thingy" .. I mean, its normal for a DJ to promote himself and by doing so it builds public interest. Its also normal to tell your friends about your upcoming gigs too but it should not be expected by the promotor for them to do so.

I think that Dj's are booked to "ensure" quality music, but a single DJ alone will not fill-up a venue if he is not well surrounded. Its hard to convince your friend to come to a party to hear 60 minutes of a set that he wants to hear.. BUT if the dj up next has a "common" friend, maybe it will be easyer for one of us to convince that friend to come after all.

I don't think ANY dj alone can bring in the people without the promotor who creates the hype for the party. That's why his title is "promotor" and not "Dj" .. A Dj has to worry about getting his set organised and performing a kickass set FOR THE PEOPLE WHO COME to the party.

Thanks what i think at least !! :)

DUDE! No one fucked you out of anything! lol I told you we're going to fix our issues, and I'm not a shit kid because shit kids dont pay back old dealer debts, they also dont back up their freinds (like bind) after smoeone slanders them on the net...I'm a GOOD kid that want to be everyones friend (not everyone gives him the chance though) so before we get further down the rabbit hole lets all calm the down and have some better moments this year round....I sure as hell cant keep arguing, I hate it.

Anywho Peace...

Alexander.

I never said it was not the promoters job to promote either. It is... All I am saying is in the real world (commerical world), people get booked because they bring people to an event. For smaller raves, promoters book the people they like to hear and don't care if they loose, and if they did care, they would not book people who don't bring in money. Any event can be successful as long as the people you bring know their place, and know how to promote themselves!
I'm feeling relax right now..

Face it, underground people can not make a living being a dj, and once they become popular, they are no longer underground. When you become commercial you become sellouts... It's the way the world works but there are people (most of the people on this site) who like to support the underground as much as possible. This will only get a person so far in life. Only you yourself can push yourself to become mainstream. And once you're mainstream, your name will advertise itself and you won't have to go finding the people to help get you a salary while playing at an event since you automatically know people will pay to see you without you even saying anything. It takes work, and the way for a dj to become popular is not by having promoters promoter them but by them promoting themselves. Give away CDs, upload mixes to the net, make flyers/business cards for yourself to push the events you play at. Do whatever you have to do to make it worthwhile for the promoters to book you. Try playing out of town for free. No one is going to pay for you to travel across the country if your not going to bring a soul. But if you can make a name of yourself, you create demand for your name, and with demand becomes fame. For all those djs who complain they never get books, I guarantee telling a promoter you guarantee him x amount of people at their events will beat a good mix anyday.
I'm feeling relax right now..
