I actually think it is part of a DJs job to try and bring people. No one would normally bring an out of town DJ if they thought the person would not bring people to their event. No one would want to pay for a plane, hotel, alcohol and whatnot if the person didn't bring people. And if he is a local and getting paid for it, then there is normally a reason the person is getting paid. It's because the promoter expects the person to bring more people to the event to make the money back to pay him plus some extra. Lately most people have been loosing money on their events. If people didn't play every week so when they did play, lots of people would goto the event because they want to see that certain someone play, then things would be better.

Yes it is the promoters job to promote the party also. He has to pay the extra sound, lighting, security, alcohol, and whatever else. So I'll repeat again, it's not just the promoters job to promoter the party. If you're getting paid to play somewhere, it should be your responsibility to get people to come to the event. If your getting paid 50$, personally I think you should bring in at least 100$ of money at the door.
I'm feeling relax right now..

Promotors promote
dj's play music
If a promoter is consistently losing money at his events, he isn't very good at what he is doing!

promotion lets people know these people are playing at that party... of course having a line-up full of nobodies will get you no where even if you have shitloads of promo done... but if you have the maddest line-up ever and no one ever sees a flyer or hear about it on the net or whatnot... then its a lot of wasted effort and money

its not the responsability of a dj to promote... his job is to be good enough so that the promoters have no trouble convincing people their gig is gonna be the bomb... if a dj helps out with the promo, he's doing extra work (and it is greatly appreciated of course)

my two cents
I'm feeling a storm brewing right now..

It's both people's jobs to promote... You can't say that it's not the responsibility of the DJs to promote. As I mentioned if it's not then you're as good as a DJ who spins for sweet 16 nights and bar-mitzvahs. You might not have to even promote if your name brings in the people. 2-3x the money you're getting paid should be going back into the event you're playing at and getting paid for or else people should not book you as a DJ unless they want to heard you spin.

basically you're a dj and you're playing to the party so you should tell all your friends to bring their friends over to hear you and party :p

I agree that telling friends people you know that you're giging at a party is natural... for sure I mean personaly, when I get a booking, you basically couldn't keep me from bugging everyone about the fact that im playing at that party and its gonna be the bomb (especially if I know the promoter is working hard on his shit)! but when I think promoting, I think printing flyers and posters and putting em up everywhere, flyering bootiques, doing radio shows, newspapers... basically trying in any way possible to reach people you do not know...

But even then... well... k lemme give an example, if a promoter does not promote, he's intitled to get shit from the other organisers same way if the guy thats responsible for getting sound rents two mackies and a cdn-88 for a 500 people sized venue, he should get shit... but I dont think that giving shit to a dj becaus his friends didn't show up is justified... namean?

btw I'd like to say that the views I've expressed here (like since the begining of this thread) are not absolute and I'm not the kind of asshole that is completely one-sided about things... in other words I do respect and understand all of your point of views and am open to changing mine if I hear a good enough argument ;)
I'm feeling a storm brewing right now..

Lets say you have a party all locals... Each local gets paid 50$, and each local brings in 100$ of money. You have 8 djs playing. That means the djs bring in 400$ of cash to the party... Now you have the promoter promoting lets say he also brings in 50$ for each dj playing. That is another 400$... So your party can not cost more then 800$ including sound, flyers and location.

Income 1200 - Expenses 400 = 800

Now you have an out of town dj. He is costing you a flight of 1000$ and maybe 300$ spending money for hotel and food. That guy should bring in 2600$ to your party. You also have 7 locals playing. You pay them 50$ each and they bring in 350$ to your party. The promoter also brings maybe 650$ from the out of towner that the name of the out of towner did not bring in. That only leaves 1950 for flyers (350$ for 5000), location (600$), sound (500$), security (300$), coat check people (200$). This is not a lot of money to pay for all this stuff especially since you would need a bigger location then the previous situation.

Income (2600 + 350 + 650) - Expenses (1300 + 350) = 1950

Trust me it is just as much the job of the djs who are playing at an event to promoter it just as much as the promoter does. If you don't think so then you're part of the reason it's barely possibly to even brake even on a party. Lets see how you think the break down should be...
I'm feeling relax right now..

well if a dj doesn't bring people in the promoters won't want to book that person anyways... no one wants a party with only djs and no crowd, because no one knows about the djs. djs need to promote themselves and the party they are going to play to. convince people their shit is worth listening to.
some djs have fans, they don't need to move the world to get people to come.
I'm feeling now what right now..

oh my fuckin god, i just saw all this shit... this is fucking hilarious. i didn''t even bother reading it all...

i had an agreement that if there is no cash no one gets paid....... before i booked them........
because i already lost money on this event, and that it is scary that people don't come because of family the next day... all thje dj's knew the deal before hand. only one dick got pissed....

and the thing is that i called my roomate to change the post, and i said a comment about the jew thing. He misunderstood me and wrote that online... i wouldn't write that online... i did say it, but i didn't write it.... hahaha this is hilarious... anyways the dj's knew what the deal was and that is all i have to say... i even called most of them and thanked them and they were pretty happy... the only one i really want to contact is dirty dan.. please call me 514-232-1076...

anuyways, thanks for coming to the party and thanks for playing everyone, and i think every one will be on the menu next year, except one...

and the jew thing, i spoke to corey after all this and thank him without even knowing about this shit... i'm not racist at all, and everyone knows that..
anyways sorry for this miss understanding... and i don't think it would have been a story if it wasn't for that shit kid host one... he even wrote to me to sya hey man we're cool right, even after he fucked me my money.. a while ago...

anyways guys, i love you all, hope this doesn't mess shit up.
if you have something to say 514-232-1076

happy new year, dudes, see you at saphires...

peace
I'm feeling revelationed right now..

I do agree with you that dj's make people go to party, that's a no brainer! why would we put the line-up on the flyer anyways but my point is that most of the unpleasent tasks of promoting must be done by promoters... getting at the 37 parties that week-end, early so everyone sees your posters all over when they come in and leave late so you can flyer everyone going out, thats the promoters duty to me... If I ask a dj to help me out promoting and he's down, I take it as a favor!

Now I hope you all know that I am both a promoter organiser and a dj and that I personally bust my ass to help out with the promotion at raves where I am booked... in fact booked or not I always try to help out with events... I do a radio show and the basic purpose is to try and help out the rave scene in montreal... this has taken me the better part of my fucking life for the last year (and btw I am pretty offended by your last remark). People who know me know that I pay for the raves I go to no matter how much help I am giving, I've even paid for other people to get in to certain parties... if memory serves me well, I've been guestlisted only twice to raves and I did not ask for those guestlists... my point? the health of the rave scene IS very important to me... I hope all of you understand that regardless on my opinions on who has what duties (and I do insist on the word duties) that I am extremmely passionate and that I care for this scene (yeah I know its corny)

noah I do completely respect your way of thinking in this and thats fine! you can work anyway you feel comfortable with to organise your parties. I will continue to help out with promoting this scene for as long as I can in anyway that I can but I will not demand the djs I book to my parties to promote... I will ask kindly instead ;) (and im not implying that you are a tyrant either)

The party was great anyways ;)

For promoting, you can ask some raver-friends you trust to help pass flyers too.
