Wake up people!! Time for A Brief Rave History
If you are curious about the old school Montreal Rave scene...read on.

1993-94

While massive raves were going on in the UK, raves were just starting to take roots in North America.
Everything was fresh.

the people

The scene was small enough that once you went to a couple of parties, you would recongnized everyone.
They were different circles of friends. Crew from Westmount/NDG, couple of West Island crews, Ottawa kids
who eventually moved to Montreal, McGill/Plateau students, Quebec city crew, there were even regulars
from Maine/Vermont.

We all respected each other, no matter what backround you came from. There was no snob
or self-elitism. No one was jaded. It was like the first generation of ravers. Remember, this was an era
where there was no such thing as legal afterhours, no candy kids, no plur, no glowsticks, no attitude.
We didnt call ourselves ravers. We were just kids.
Although we were all young and somewhat naive, we knew we were part of a emerging neo urban culture.

the music

Techno and Trance were kings with acid flavor thrown into it. Hardcore had a small but dedicated fallowing.
Drum and bass/jungle had a fallowing too. House (hard n progressive) was popular but it seem to me it moved
into to lounges.

There were only a few vynil stores. There was Bunker. It was located where
the SoftImage bulding is. There was DNA records run by Tiga. It's first location was inside Juan Juanita
in Cours Mont-Royal. Juan Juanita used to be where the main floor of Club Monacco. Inbeat was also a good shop.
Taboo also had a few selections.

omfg AUTECHRE !! great party :)

the raves

Raves were somewhat quasi-illegal. Most of the promoters were cegep/university students. Unlike today, raves
were uncommon. Party happened maybe once a month. In a way it was a good thing, we didn't overindulgence
ourselves and burn out fast. Also we were exposed to alot of musical styles;
last month was a hardoce party, this month is jungle, next month is techno.

They used to be organized bus trips to raves in other north-east coast cities. How US customs let a whole bunch
of minors cross the border is beyond me. There were trips to NYC, Boston, and Rhode Island. The scene was so small
back then that you knew wat parties were happening in other cities.

Angels on thursdays satiate our hunger for electro music. There was also Liquid on fridays at Metropolis.

bahaha the xtc was really powerful at Bliss. just look at his jaw. Me too i was rushing real hard.
also it was the start of "raving" which later turn into liquid dance.

she was a good dancer.

the drugs
same as always. Except these day you have ALOT more choices.

post morning crack out, can't remember if it was acid or mesc.

the clothes
just look at the posted pictures. Haha.. damn wtf were we wearing? We were sporting old skool clothes
(adidas, puma) from the 1980's.

if i only remember the location of that werehouse...

Milton and Clark
The corner of Milton and Clark was the meeting point of all shuttle buses and buses to the US.

west island girls, bus trip to Camp Earth at Warwick RI

alright, class is over. comments and questions are welcome n appreciated. (btw im not in any of the pics)

"Juan Juanita used to be where the main floor of Club Monacco."
wasn't it first where 'nova' is or something on the bottom floor and where style exchange is today?

there were 2 juan and juanitas, one on st-laurent, then one in court-mont royal shortly after. can't remember if the original one moved, or if there were actually 2 separate stores at any one time.. but i remember they used to sell wax in both of the stores also
