i know this is like a RAVE mssgboard and shit, n most people here probably are into 60s70-s inspired rock or country bluegrass type shit.. but for the few that are, check out these two local bands next time you get, as they are fucking DOPE. The Wells should basically be super pop radio heroes, every song is mad catchy simple, wicked shit, they're super tight onstage and just complete pros busting out track after track of perfection... The United Steel Workers on the other hand are a vicious, gritty country bluegrass outfit, no drummer 3 guitarists 1 mandolin/banjoist + 1 upbright double bass player + vocalists that really stick to the vintage formula, yeee ha stick it to your horsie type shit, best i've ever heard from a local band without a doubt. just wanted to spout on the illness i witness last night. wicked show!

DAWSON COLLEGE BENEFIT CONCERT AIMS TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE WHOLE COMMUNITY

The Stills and Fred Everything set to perform in support of Dawson College and Kids Help Phone

In Concert Against Violence, a charity formed in the wake of the events of September 13th 2006 will hold a benefit concert for two causes: the first being the scholarship fund established in collaboration with the family of Anastasia DeSousa and Dawson College and the second; Kids Help Phone. The benefit will be held on Thursday, the 7th of December, 2006 at Club Metropolis, located at 59 Saint-Catherine street East. Tickets are priced for students at $15 and $20 for adults. They are on sale through Ticketpro and at Metropolis, E-Biz, and for students at Concordia and Dawson.

The organisers are throwing the event with the view of have something positive emerge from these tragic events. “It is important to state that Montreal is a tolerant and peaceful community and such actions are aberrations and do not reflect a city that is fairly unaccustomed to gun violence,” stated Daniel Rafuse, attorney and Director of In Concert Against Violence.

The Dawson Benefit Concert previously scheduled for November 25th was moved to coincide with the availability of certain artists. Net proceeds of the ticket sales will be divided equally between Kids Help Phone and the Anastasia DeSousa, Memorial Fund.

“We have been approached by a number of individuals looking to do something after the tragedy, we feel a benefit concert is appropriate because it allows the student population an outlet to respectfully remember and to have fun at the show”, said Mary Di Liello staff member of Dawson College responsible for the Anastasia DeSousa, Memorial Fund . The fund was set up by the college to provide scholarships to students in financial need. “What is also positive is that the DeSousa family has offered their time to assist in selecting recipients of the scholarship that will bear the name of their daughter.”

Bruno Mital, regional director of Kids Help Phone said, “I support this event; the volume of calls and volunteers that we required immediately after this incident increased dramatically.”

“The response from the local music community has been overwhelming, we were extremely pleased to book artists such as The Stills, Fred Everything, and D-Shade from Shades of Culture. The artists have committed themselves to throwing an amazing show for the students, the aim is to use music as a means of collective catharsis and to raise funds for two great causes,” commented Me Rafuse.

Dislexik (Pure Phunk Recordings, [ www.purephunk.com ] [ www.myspace.com ]

in his own words... I'm a 26 year old producer, dj, drummer and other things based out of Saskatoon, SK, Canada...which for those of you who aren't aware is in the middle of nowhere....not exactly the cultural mecca of electronic music, or any music for that matter (but we make due). :) I got involved with the electronic scene in a roundabout way back in the mid to early nineties through a love of industrial music. There was a club here called the PPM which ended up becoming one of the biggest "rave" production companies in the prairies over the years. Anyway, I started volunteering there on weekends, helping out with lighting design for performance art, doing a bit of body painting and such on the side. The resident DJ there was Deko-Ze, a no-prolific DJ based out of Toronto. He introduced me and most other young aspiring musicians and dj's in S'toon to the best in underground dance music at the time...something I had no idea existed beyond Culture Beat. :)
It was just before that time when I started toying with tracker programs on my friend's amiga, and eventually my PC. I discovered I had a bit of a knack for writing electronic music, mainly industrial music and hard techno at the time but eventually branching out into other styles. With a little support from the local cummunity radio show, the local goth clubnight and some really good friends, I got my foot in the door here as a small time producer. The problem I encountered was that doing live PA electronic music was quite costly at the time...there wasn't much for software available and so you had to by lots of hardware instead. Being a kid out of highschool, I had no money or no real knowledge of how to go about building a live environment to work in and decided to give this "dj'ing" thing a go. I picked up a pair of cheap Gemini PT-1000's and a really bad mixer, and raided the local "record shop" (and I use the term loosely, it was a disaster to get any decent tracks here in those days before internet shops started up). I picked up basic beat matching fairly quickly, and got a residency at a local bar called Club Lux. This was the best thing that could have happened to me, as I got to play 6 hour sets once a week, ranging from downtempo to house to breaks to techno and trance and once in a while even jungle...
To this day I pride myself in having one of the broadest music collections in the province and love to play all different styles in my sets, even at the risk of losing a bit of flow in the process. Fast forward a bit, say about 5 years, and I found myself back in the studio producing tracks again. After selling pretty much most of my hardware I went back to my software roots. Programs like Reason, Acid and Fruity Loops were a good halfway point between my old beloved trackers and the blind world of hardware synths and I fell in love with them. Though producing a little here and there, mainly short loops and such to layer during sets, I wasn't really making much headway in my career. As a joke, an old friend from my goth industrial days asked if I'd play some industrial at a show...so I scrambled around to find a track that would fit in with my set, but couldn't find anything. I sat down and banged out a mashup of a famous industrial track with a big room breaks track. Eventually a dj/label owner from Toronto heard it at a show I played with him and asked to press it.
For a first release it did extremely well, and the whole experience gave me a lot of incite into the music industry. I should also note around this time that I got back behind the drum kit and joined up with local Horror Rockers "The New Jacobin Club"....who I'm still with today. We are just about to release our third full length album entitled "Wicked City" which will be available on Scratch Distribution by July. Playing in this band has been a great outlet for my other musical interests...I do programming for them but playing drums is still a passion of mine and I hope to keep doing it for a long long time yet. Also, due to the nature of our stage show I get to exersise my theatrical side a bit too. Check us out at [ www.myspace.com ] I have to say that most of what happened from then on out was a lot of luck and fortune...I've had a lot of help from friends passing tracks around and I'd say I owe them a lot for everything that's happened so far.
Pure Phunk Recordings signed me a few years back and have helped me alot with networking and support. Here's looking forward to many crazy years to come!

...Mix is very proud to present the RETURN of DJ Indica, who has battled back from health problems to reign at the top of his game. About 11 months ago Mix promised that when Indica was healthy again, he would be back at the Mix and now, we're so fucking happy to have him back!!! a Montreal rave legend...

Indica (Stay Up Forever Recordings, Sweet Leaf Productions, [ www.myspace.com ]

The musical roots of DJ Indica are pretty diversified. Indica liked to listen to inspiring bands in the 80's such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath etc. These talented artists infuenced Indica's "Fuck off" punk/metal attitude in music. Then around the corner came the 90's with the industrial underground techno..metal music scene. This opened a door for Indica, the possibility of mixing beat to beat with punk..metal sound to electronic pounding drums, this new sound made Indicas talents come into play. Indica was one of the first few Djs to bring this remarkable and astounding sound on the dance floor of Montreal. One night in 1994, Indica with his long hair and leather jacket was finishing up work, when a few friends were telling him about an all night "Rave-Party" that was going on that night. At first he was hesitant, "Dance music?" he said, his friend replied, "It's not what you may think".Being an open-minded friend & musician off they went to the party "Neksus" After a couple hours of watching and listening to the DJ, Indica had made up his mind. The next day he sold his Cd player and bought himself decks.
In 1998 after playing in many bars and doing several radio shows, Indica had his first gig at a party called "Majick", he then introduced his name to the scene, with an amazing set to end the party of 1500 kids. Then came 1999!!! KABOOM!!!! The invasion began.Indica ambushed the province of Quebec with 22 parties! He grabbed Montreal by the balls, he layed it down hard for Trois Rivieres, he shook up Sherbrooke and conquered his favorite city to play... Quebec City!!! He is 'pulling-the-pin-out-of-the-grenade' with the Stay Up Forever Collective Label. This is where the kick ass 303 and the 909's is fuckin 'avin it! That year, Indica and his best friend, DJ Pop-eye, began their own production company, "Sweet Leaf Production". With huge success, they threw their first two parties, Embryon and Trick-or-Treat. He also started "The Matrix Night" with Yaz and Pop-eye, a weekly techno night at the Sphinx nightclub. Also on his schedule many bar appearance and radio show to educate the people to ACID TECHNO!!!

This is also the year where Indica and S4 bring a new meaning to the DJ term 'tag-team'. They are the first to play on 4 decks and 3 mixers, pleasing the crowd with techno harmony, they chose to work by co-operation, rather than most tag-team DJ battles on stage.
That year Indica met Chris Liberator and Mark Tyler, Sharing many music interests in sounds, Indica inspired, tag-teamed with both remarkable DJ's. Also that year, Sweet Leaf Production threw 3 more parties called "Foetus, Genetik and Basic", and they collaborated with Millenium production for celebration of "The Arrival 4". They also collaborated with Ray Junior's Halloween event, "Gloom 3". Matrix Thursday night turned into Restart Night with Indica & DJ Iznogood (the dj that broke a record in the guiness world record Book for playing 38 hours at a rave-party (without drugs !!!) For 2001, Beginning a non-stop marathon of over 60 parties, Indica starts the new year at "Apocalypse 2001" in Montreal. also having a great spring, Sweet Leaf Productions holds "Embryon v2.0", with great success to kick off a great summer of outdoor festivals such as "Revolution Radar One" in Quebec, "W.E.M.F",(8000 people!) in Ontario, and also stomping in the woods in Trois Rivieres. S.L.P finishes off a kick ass summer holding celebration "A.D.N.Genetik 2", also great fun and huge success. S.L.P also collaberate with Ray Junior again at "EvolutionRadarOne" & "Gloom 4". Now, the present time Indicas record label born with the first release, "The First Harvest". Tracks such as, "Hey ho, lets go"(Indica & DDR), and "Be Sedated",(HPS 1000, Indica & Pop-eye) are scheduled to be released on C.O.S.H.H. records early in December. Friend and fellow dj, The Coffee Man proposed to Indica to remix his track of "I Seek You", so , "The Assault Remix" was born, released on vinyl on Tektribe Records in 2002! Right now Indica is working hard, and sometime soon he'll write a more updated bio!! :)

DJ Spacekadet (Planete Break, Frogland Breakers)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DJ Sarcastic:
Founder of underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions, this enigmatic character has contributed to the causes of Montreal's electronic music subculture on various levels for over ten years as label manager, DJ, producer, promoter and music critic. Possessed since childhood with a needling drive to splice together discrete musical compositions, first with cassette decks, microphones, CD players or 8-tracks, it was only a matter of time before Sarcastic was introduced to his lifetime partner: the Technics 1200. His love for the abstract repetitive nature of techno remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts, an inquisitive nature driving him to seek out new sonic media for creative expression. Equally at home behind two or three decks, Sarcastic's legendary diversity and adaptability has allowed him to perform alongside many of his major influences such as NYCs Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech DJ Assault, Stockholm's Slobodan or Thomas Krome, UK breakbeat stars Freestylers and Deekline or minimal techno/dub genius Deadbeat. Turned on to production from a DJ perspective, Sarcastic's remixes, bootlegs and original compositions regularly find their way into his seamlessly mixed, carefully programmed DJ sets. 2006 saw Sarcastic produce stomping ghetto-tek influenced remixes for France's Aiwa (Pharagonescia, Wikkid Records-009) and Montreal's live DnB act Hardsteppers (Fist Fight). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rcola:
RCola lives in Montreal, Canada and plays a high-energy blend of ragga-jungle & dubwise vinyls alongside his own original dubplates. After discovering jungle on late-night radio, he started producing beats and playing his own productions live as a DJ. He now has 18 vinyls and three CDs out on labels such as Chopstick Dubplate, Wikkid Records, Royal Crown, Humble Recordings, Jungle Royale, Intune Ragga Sessions, and JungleXpeditions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wikkid Records
Founded by Julian Paige in 1999 in Montreal, Wikkid has gone on to release CDs and vinyls showcasing quality electronic, fusion and experimental music by such-world renowned artists as Toronto's Capital J, France's Aiwa, the UK's Nuskool Players or Montreal's David Kristian, growing to establish offices in London and Paris in the 21st century. Aiwa's 2nd full-length album El Nar (2006) is being followed by the Aiwa Remixed compilation featuring 12" vinyl 2step, DnB, house and techno remixes courtesy of Sarcastic, Rise Ashen, Generic, Nu Skool Players, Capital J and more. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathan Burns:
During the late 90s, Nathan Burns quickly discovered his indisputable passion for mixing as a dj. Privileging mostly techno, jacking minimal, house and electro, he controls the dance floor with his tastefully funky choice of tracks. His attention to detail and technique combined with years of electronic music sampling have enabled him to deliver us musical expression at its best. Burns has clearly proved to us that handling turntables with precision will make all the difference in dazzling his fans. Having been a resident dj in many Montreal clubs such as Angels (Electro-Vogue nights) and Mile End Bar, he also produced two different nights at Blue Dog entitled Sub Mission and La Mafia Électronique. He is often solicited to join various private affairs as well as clubs. In pursuit of his musical goals, Nathan Burns is now head of Microzoo, a Montreal based electronic music event production group. [ www.microzoo.ca ] [ www.myspace.com ]

1. plur
180 up, 16 down

n. The lifestyle concept of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. Originated in a speech by NYC DJ Frankie Bones early in the history of raves, it's undefined dogma of comraderie for all humanity has been adopted by many ravers as an attempted lifestyle.

We as a community need to observe PLUR in our everyday lives; the reason we love the people around us is because we all love the music, and so we should try to reach beyond that and embrace our fellow man.

2. PLUR
23 up, 3 down

P= peace
L= love
U= unity
R= respect
it started up in the rave scene/culture. dj frankie bones was believed to have started PLUR after a fight started while his was deejayin. he said "If you don't start showing some peace, love, and unity, I'll break your fucking faces." then respect was added to it in a discussion in a rave newsgroup(alt.music.rave)
its also mainly used on rave sites and stuff like [ .com ] cauz u wouldnt say PLUR in real life but u would say peace love unity and respect.

PLUR is a north american raver credo for anyone who dont know (act like you do :) ) ... in my interview with frankie he confirmed that the 2nd def. here is true ^^^... read my column [ www.hour.ca ] for the details
