FRANKIE BONES

Frankie Bones knows a lot about this business. For one thing, he's been behind the counter at Manhattans legendary Sonic Groove record shop for more than 15 years, and he's been a master of the turntables for even longer. As one of the pioneers of acid house on the far side of the Atlantic, he's seen plenty of trends, novelties and fly-by-night DJ's come and go, but he's always stuck with the skills that took him into the field in the first place: An unrivalled ear for a crowd-pleasing tune and lightning quick hands that can mix almost any old vinyl into a seamless dancefloor experience. His seminal Bones Breaks releases have proved that he's no slouch in the studio either, and more outings such as The Saga EP on London's seminal techno imprint PRO-JEX shows that he still knows exactly what to do with a sledgehammer bassline or a tantalising breakdown.

But we all know that it's what a DJ does live which really proves his mettle - and Bones never disappoints. He's headlining at the consistently interesting headstart at Turnmills (now monthly) in an intriguing line-up that also features a hip-hop set from Camden tech-boy Billy Nasty. Turnmills eh? Every time you try to write them off, they come up with another unmissable night out.

Immediately recognizable and perhaps completely synonomous with words like 'techno' and 'DJ' is the name Frankie Bones; a name many heed as imperative to the global underground scenes' framework. Getting a head start in the early 80's as an underground house and freestyle DJ; the bred and born Brooklynist soon became a world renowned DJ-producer who would not only be the first to rock both sides of the atlantic; but would also be largely responsible for promoting the underground sound of cutting edge techno via tapes, parties... whatever means possible. In his greatest promotional move, Bones established a permanent outlet for DJs looking to find and purchase the very specific sound and records found within the techno genre. With this purpose in mind; the original Groove Records Avenue U Shop was founded. Over the years he would also establish the blueprint for DJ and rave culture as we know it with a stream of unforgettable events with the grin-invoking moniker Storm Rave. Now, just 10 years later -- with the store firmly entrenched on record row (Carmine St. Manhattan) Bones has again turned his attention to the music and consequently his production skills; developing and perfecting the sound of the street on labels like Sonic Groove and Ghetto Technics.

Frankie Bones has a style of DJing which is often imitated, but never duplicated. His intense mixing puts you on a roller coaster ride through an electrified atmosphere. From the first big drop, through loops of bass and twists of treble and then coasting into an ending smooth as steel. Frankie's formidable appearance behind the turntables has always been anticipated. Regardless of place or time, Frankie Bones has never failed to deliver a dynamic mix of hard-edged electronic music.

As a music maker, Frankie Bones occupies his own niche. His records cannot be given a once-over, tagged, then put on a shelf. The techno wave has grown....

"been collectin' frankie since he came out. He has layed down the path for us to follow"

ahhh. this is what i was looking for... just for those that may not be aware, or perhaps think of bones only as a techno producer. or house producer. or whatever... but y'all should know bones is the one the truth the source and the light.. so read on

BREAKS HEADS MUST READ THIS :

History of Jungle / Drum & Bass - Unknown author 1998

Breakbeat was an underground music which had originally come in from the USA in the late 1970s. Frankie Bones, at his early DJ-ing stage had created breakbeat irregular music, whereby he had overlapped two same records on turn-table decks at slightly different speeds and slightly delayed. This would create asynchronous beat, which would drive the crowd crazy. His track named "Bones Breaks" was a pioneer if not discovererof breakbeat which has remained strictly underground since. In the late 80s, house scene erupted in UK, especially in London. As house scene had progressed, the ecstasy rave culture had emerged from the youth, suppressing the football hooliganism. House from one side and breakbeat from the other side had created a combination, which later led to production of what was called jungle and what is now called drum & bass. (from [ www.globaldarkness.com ]

The UK, its 1989, Arsenal had just been crowned League champions, but more importantly a new trend is taking over the youth culture – ‘Raves’ or ‘Acid House Parties’ were occurring in large fields in the middle of nowhere or in warehouses that someone had just broken into. From driving to the meeting point to following a car with its fog light on to dancing amongst thousands of ravers to the sounds of ‘Sueno latino’, Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’ and 808 States ‘Quadrastate EP’ to name but a few, and waiting for the sunrise, this whole new experience was about to change the attitude of the average youth from the street.

One of the early pioneers was Frankie Bones, along side his partners Lenny Dee & Tommy Musto. Some of their early productions were the first to incorporate breakbeats over House rhythms and was instantly recognised as having a more ‘rawer’ sound to what else was going on. With tracks like ‘Bones Breaks’ and ‘Just as long as I got you’ on the classic ‘Loony Tunes’ EP, it was clear to see which direction this new form of music was going to take us.

Frankie Bones, simply put, is the most influential figure in North American electronic dance music history. The world's first international touring DJ, founder of America's first techno record store (Sonic Groove NYC, 1990) and visionary behind the STORMrave events, Frankie Bones is truly a legend. Whether as a DJ with a career spanning three decades, six continents and performances at every major music festival on Earth, or as the producer behind the Bonesbreaks and Ghetto Technics series' laying the foundations for the contemporary genres of break beat, techno, electro and house, or as a promoter breaking such acts as Josh Wink, Richie Hawtin or Sven Vath, or as the conceptual mind behind the raver motto of PLUR, his legacy touches everyone. Don't miss this event. [ www.frankiebones.com ]

what do you mean by electro-breaks?

are you referring to some sort of hybrid form of modern electro and nuskool breaks?

or are you referring to an existing body of producers who, in the late 80s and early 90s, first called their music electro: such as aux 88, juan atkins, electromorph, dave clark or the advent... when the word 'electro' began, by the late 90s, to refer to an entirely different set of standards, the former sound became known as "electro-breaks" for some reason, and now includes such active labels and artists as Electrix, I-T Transimissions, Sons of Slough, etc...

i think the lineup is good but you're ascribing yet another definition to a word, "electrobreaks", which has already been raped enough over the years.

the linklater dude that made waking life recently made another film, A Scanner Darkly (movie adaptation of Philip K Dick's amazing novel)... incidentally, I thought the only interesting part of wakig life -other than the dope quasi-animation, was when they were talking about Philip K Dick.

here's a summary of some of it (couldnt find the script online.)

Dick once wrote things into a novel, believing them to be pure fiction, only to learn later that they were true. The novel in question is Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, a book that (according to Linklater) Dick wrote "really fast," as if he was channeling it from somewhere. Dick himself described his "baffling" experience in a 1978 speech titled "How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later":

In 1970 I wrote a novel called Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said. One of the characters is a nineteen-year-old girl named Kathy. Her husband's name is Jack. Kathy appears to work for the criminal underground, but later…we discover that actually she is working for the police. She has a relationship going on with a police inspector. The character is pure fiction. Or at least I thought it was.

Anyhow, on Christmas Day of 1970, I met a girl named Kathy--this was after I had finished the novel, you understand. She was nineteen years old. Her boyfriend was named Jack. I soon learned that Kathy was a drug dealer. I spent months trying to get her to give up dealing drugs…. Then, one evening as we were entering a restaurant together, Kathy stopped short and said, "I can't go in." Seated in the restaurant was a police inspector whom I knew. "I have to tell you the truth," Kathy said. "I have a relationship with him"…

In 1974 the novel was published by Doubleday. One afternoon I was talking to my priest…and I happened to mention to him an important scene…in which the character Felix Buckman meets a black stranger at an all-night gas station, and they begin to talk. As I described the scene…my priest became progressively more agitated. At last he said, "That is a scene from the Book of Acts, from the Bible! In Acts, the person who meets the black man on the road is named Philip--your name"…

I went home and read the scene in Acts. Yes, Father Rasch was right; the scene in my novel was an obvious retelling of the scene in Acts...and I had never read Acts… But again the puzzle became deeper. In Acts, the high Roman official who arrests and interrogates Saint Paul is named Felix--the same name as my character. And my character Felix Buckman is a high-ranking police general; in fact, in my novel he holds the same office as Felix in the Book of Acts: the final authority. There is a conversation in my novel which very closely resembles a conversation between Felix and Paul.

Because of this baffling experience, Dick theorized that time is an illusion (not unlike Talbot's holographic paradigm) and he had somehow seen through it. Being religious, Dick guessed that we are all actually existing in 50 A.D. (when the Book of Acts takes place), and that someone has created time to distract us from the fact that God is imminent.

anyways. go see A Scanner Darkly. it's the ultimate drug movie, and also filmed with a similar tracing / alteration of real footage type styleeee. one of my favourite books of all time so I guess I'm biased, but if you don't feel like reading the book, the movie only takes an hour and a half.

mark your calendars people DJ motherfucking ASSAULT is comin back to montreal

september 14 @ saphir. thursday. $8 at the door no advance tickets no guestlist come early to ensure admittance.

for anyone that doesn't know, Assault is basically the inventor of what's known as booty and/or ghetto-tek, he's a mindblowing technical DJ and raw n real on the mic. this the pinnacle of electrofunkncrunkafied party music. do NOT sleep.

DJ Assault aka Craig Diamonds "The Street Narrator"

Born Craig De Shan Adams and raised in Detroit, Craig came to dance music like many of his Motown brethren, via the radio. Detroit radio jocks made lasting impressions on the young artist. Mixing records since 1982, Craig has been indoctrinating people with his own take on Detroit dance music, which is very much an amalgam of his radio predecessors. The introduction of scratching and rapping to non-Hip Hop genres of music, this style is something that could only have come from Detroit. Along the way, DJ Assault was born.

Anything is game when Assault DJs, be it house, techno, jungle, R & B or whatever -- as long as booties are bouncing. He has rocked parties around the world, including sets in Germany, Holland, France, Spain, UK, Japan, Australia, throughout North America and Canada. Each time it's the same: When he steps up to the decks and unleashes that high-speed booty-shake, the audience has only one option -- tear the club up.

Now let's breakdown this Craig Diamonds guy. They are 2 different personalities Assault is everything you know so far. But, Craig Diamonds is the next phase. Craig which is my real name is saying I can be myself. Diamonds is not reflective of jewelry but is saying I shine. So when you put the name Craig Diamonds all together it means, I can be myself and still shine

DJ ASSAULT A.K.A. CRAIG DIAMONDS "The STREET NARRATOR" is hard at work with his new label and a place to finally call home "JEFFERSON AVE". On this label, the first full length mix CD is available entitled "Sumthin' 2 Shake Yo' Azz 2". There is also a 12" release for this CD. Another 12" entitled "The Accelerated Funk E.P." is also available. Look for a lot more vinyl releases in the future containing some classic DJ ASSAULT re-mixes of earlier recordings. Assault is also the winner of the "Detroit Music Outstanding Hip Hop DJ Award" for both 2001 and 2002. Now, all that can be done is to wait and watch Accelerated Funk take over the world one party at a time.

Craig Diamonds is also the man behind a whole new set of beats -- the man responsible for some of the most infectious hooks this side of the Mississippi. Producing records since 1995 Assault has been making some of the most talked about booty-bass tracks in existence. Songs like "Ass 'n Titties" which was used in a April 2004 episode of the Dave Chappelle Show on Comedy Central, "Shake It, Work It" aired in a HP ipod commercial during the August 2004 VMA's (Video Music Awards)on MTV and has continued to play on national television every since. "Yo Relatives" has also turned into a genre classic as well, "Like I said when I play a gig, I'll play anything -- from bass to techno to jungle to hip-hop to house, "But as a producer, I call the music I make Accelerated Funk, like what you'll hear when you listen to a new DJ Assault mixed album, on Jefferson Ave."

In 12' news the Jefferson Ave. catalog is up to 14 releases with no plans on slowing down anytime soon. By the end of 2004 every DJ Assault track made from 1995 to 2000 will be available plus all kinds of new stuff strictly for the vinyl junkies. Also, be on the look out for a bunch of new photo's and free unreleased MP3's from the man himself and CEO of Jefferson Ave. LLC. DJ Assault A.K.A. Craig Diamonds

Currently, a spanking new album containing all new material is finished and awaiting release within the next 3-4 months. The only features on this album are 2 female vocalist, other than that Assault and his alter ego Craig "The Diamond Man" completely hold it down. The only comment Assault had when asked about his new album was, "This will be the first time the public get a real close up of the man Craig Diamonds." The title of this new album is being kept under raps for now.

Their demo is strong, but live they're bliss. Between the male/female tug o'war and the Talking Heads-style winking irony, it's a perfect power-pop Frankensound." (Dylan Young, Hour Magazine)

MIGHTY KAT [ www.mightykat.com ] "Some creatures have a sixth sense about rhythm. Mightykat is one of them. Having played London, Luxembourg and Paris while holding down a number of club residencies in Montreal (notably Laika, Exit, Circus, Ministry and currently Academy's popular Dizzy), Mightykat has shared the bill with international artists like Coldcut, Swayzak, Ricardo Villalobos, Herbert, Safety Scissors or Dimbiman, continuing to bolster her reputation as an expert craftswoman of minimal techno and tech-house sounds."

SARCASTIC [ www.level4productions.com ] " Founder of Montreal-based underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions, this amorphous being has contributed to the subculture's cabalistic causes on many levels for the past decade as label manager, DJ, producer, promoter and music critic. Sarcastic’s diversity has allowed him to perform alongside many of his musical mentors: NYC’s Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech DJ Assault, Stockholm’s Slobodan and Thomas Krome, UK breakbeat stars Freestylers and Deekline, and minimal techno/dub genius Deadbeat. Numerous local residencies have seen Sarcastic working anything from pure techno, minimal and experimental techno to acid, breakbeats, house and tek-house, booty, ghetto-tech and even DnB into his carefully programmed DJ sets."

MELON (Broken Crew) "The world of melon is a place trapped between waking dreams and drowsy realities. Memories can’t wait as echoes of both collide."

this morning i was awakened at 9 AM by the sounds of my downstairs neighbour (he lives in the basement) talking with my landlord in my backyard, right outside my window. for whatever reason this effected my ensuing dream, which i can now recall. In my dream I looked out the back window of my apartment and saw that my downstairs neighbour, dave, had constructed a little wall around the doorway to his apartment and his windows (below ground level kinda shit), leaving the rest of the backyard to me, as it were. So I was happy about this new division in the backyard, now I felt like finally I had my OWN backyard instead of one that I have to share with Dave and the people that live on top of me. Next, I learned that Dave had vacated his apartment, which for some reason at this point in my dream became the upstairs apartment, on top of me, and that I was to take his place living up there.. when I checked out the apartment it turned out that it was the place i used to live in on bleury st., except it was all pristine and amazing clean (it smelled like cigarettes though, i remember that very clearly).. so there I am moving back into the renovated version of my old apartment except it's right on top of my current one, starting to pack shit and bring it up the stairs into my sweet new pad... oh ya, also, my new pad for some reason is furnished with all my parents' furniture, all in amazing condition, as if Dave had somehow lived in this place without fucking shit up, just smoking lots of butts and cleaning up after himself so that when I moved in it appeared all sterile and pure... this is where the dream gets sketchy. So I'm moving some shit in slowly and I take a peek into, like, a drawer in the coffee table in the living room or something, and there's this nasty shit in there, like a big black garbage bag of stankin' ass something... I try to pull it out but it ends up spilling its contents everywhere, all over the clean floor, and its like tangled ropes and bits of cloth that have obviously been either shit on, puked on, or swallowed then puked out and/or shit out of something. for some reason in my dream I take one of these bits of nasty cloth and sniff it (you know sometimes you get the urge to smell shit close up even when you KNOW it's gonna smell really bad? ) and yup, it smells like rotting death, so i' dry heaving and shit, in my dream. I dont remember much after that but I think it involved more dry heaving. when i woke up i was kinda sad because the new apartment was fucking dope, but on the other hand I was happy that I wasn't actually picking through soiled entrail-smelling garments covered in unidentified human or animal excrement. beh, you win some you lose some. glad to see the thread is still alive

German breakbeat / electro producer MALENTE is our very special guest @ Saphir cette semaine avec local DJs Fu Ancko and Keph (main floor) and live band KIDNEY STONE en haut avec DJs Insomniak et Duf

MALENTE (Unique Records) Stand 19.05.2006
ARTIST / DJ / PRODUCER BIOGRAPHY:

The German DJ and producer MALENTE has released a total of four albums on Unique Records since the year 2000. The origin of his name „Malente“ is based on the fact that he was born in a small town in northern Germany, which is called Malente (since this question is frequently posed...).
The Music: After his first 12´´ „Fertig“, Malente´s debut album „The Spirit Of Malente“ was released in 2000 including the unforgettable single „I Sell Marihuana“. The second album „No Risk No Funk“ earned even more respect and positive reactions. Four tracks from this LP breezed through to single-releases! The Video of „We Came To Party“ was even broadcasted by MTV on the „Dancefloorcharts“ and by the German music-channel VIVA on the „Dancevotecharts“.

Since 2004, Malente releases his works very successfully on Unique Records and Moonbootique Records, the label of Moonbootica, at the same time. Following the Moston & Malente single „In The Sky“, also broadcasted by MTV and VIVA, Moonbootique released the 12’’´s „Washington“ and „Crowdrock/Tight With You“, two other dancefloor rockers. All tunes were highly rated by the DCC (German Club Charts) and only „Dancefloor Whore/What You Got“ - an extraction of the in 2005 on Unique Records released album „Rip It Up“ - got a better positioning. „Rip It Up“ includes three new tracks by Malente and 10 remixes, whereof 8 were exclusively created for this album.

At the End of 2005, Malente released the first 12“ „Like A Freek“ from his forthcoming new album „How Can You Still Stand To Stand Still“, which will be out on 11th August 2006. This piece of vinyl immediately entered the top 10 of the DCC and held its place for seven weeks. Moreover, it reached the No.1 in UKs Breakbeat Mailorder [ www.streetwisemusic.com. ]

Malente began the year 2006 in february with „Hot Daddy“, the new 12“ on Moonboutique, followed by the Malente pres. ManroX „Theme From Manrox“ with three new tracks on Luscious Sounds (the label of Azzido Da Bass) at the end of March. In May, Moston & Malente released „The 2 & Only“ on Splank! Records UK, wherewith they could win over English mags from I:DJ to Mixmag!

Also available in the shops: The Compilation „Top Of The Clubs Vol.30“ (Kontor), including a 40-minutes-set of Moston & Malente. The second single from the new album, named „For The Revolution“, will be out in June 2006 on Unique Records. Remixes of this tune were made by Mason (Great Stuff/Middle Of The Road/ NL), Smoove (Acid Jazz/Wack!/ UK) and the Ex-BronxDog / Ex-Wiseguy (Mister Ohlala) DJ Regal (AUS).
The appeal of his unique style can be seen by the long list of remixes he has already made: among others there’s Louie Austen, Thomilla, Groove Rebels, Bob Sinclar, DJ Friction, The Strike Boys, Frank Popp Ensemble, Monosourround or Le Hammond Inferno. Another indication are his many DJ gigs not only in Germany, but worldwide. Solely in 2005, he travelled the USA, Canada, Australia, Thailand, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Greece and other countries. When Malente is playing one of his outstanding DJ-sets, party is to be expected and no puristic bullshit.
The Malente-sound is not simply ElectroHouse. It is more pumping Electro-House stompers with a rockin’ & funky feel - and this on the basis of that typically positive Malente-Vibe! No doubt it’s easier and better to listen to that than to couch in terms.

Malentes life is simply great! During the week: production; on the weekends: DJ-gigs. Thats how it always goes...
