alienata was blowing pretty hard, but axel rocked it up good n right. lots of nice minimal tek and tekhaus, with some kylie milogue in there when he started getting drunk, and wrapped it all up with a deep dose of radio slave... good shit. i heard upbeat was good 2 but i missed it. anyways.

and definitely agreet, the 11 minute long SS season of the witch pwns donovans verison but hey, he fucking wrote it so.. i remember buying donovan's greatest hits on cassette like fifteen years ago, that same night i did acid for the first time and ended up lying in bed for like fifteen hours listening to donovan over and over-obviously convinced that it was the best fucking shit EVER. so i'm kinda partial to the original .

it's obviously personal but in fact i really like amon's newer productions, which are completely NON dancefloor, and i'm always frustrated by how manic and overdone his dj sets are.. in the end i think tobin's errr, appeal definitely illustrates the chasm between "dj" and "producer".

DJ ENDO BIOGRAPHY:

With over 8 years experience behind the decks, and a lifetime background in music, Endo has made his name known worldwide and has become of the most demanded breaks DJ's in the industry, and a breaks ambassador to the world.

From smokey warehouse raves, to small clubs, to massive outdoor festivals, Endo always brings it like none other with his nonstop soundtrack of breaks from all over the spectrum.

On top of headlining raves, clubs and festivals all over the globe, Endo is also a hometown legend in Vermont for his Radio Show on 90.1 WRUV FM, "Graveyard Breaks", where he would do up to 8 hour marathon shows every week from midnight until 8AM, showing up with a carload of records and mixing non-stop and rocking the airwaves until the morning.

Besides DJing full time, Endo recently graduated from the top Music School in the USA, Berklee College Of Music, where he was classically trained and majored in Music Synthesis and Electronic Music Production. Endo used his classical training to create his own system of Harmonic DJ Mixing, which is the music theory behind Endo's party rocking. Endo's harmonic mixing is very evident in his latest DJ mixes.

In his years of DJing Endo has played alongside some of the most respected names in the Electronic Music industry such as: DJ Craze, Roc Raida, Snoop Doggy Dogg, DJ Monk from Rabbit in the Moon, DJ Hyper, Aut0bots, Screwface, Napt, Deekline & Wizard, Simply Jeff, J-break, DJ Quest, Jackyl and Hyde, Deep Impact, Ed 209, Control Z, Goldie, Hive, DJ Icey, Baby Anne, General Midi, Ried Speed, Influenza, Bassnectar, Danny the Wildchild, Donald Glaude, DJ Funk, Anabolic Frolic, Adam X, Space Girl, D:Fuse, Micro, John B, Lenny Dee, Delta 9, Rob Gee, Dave the Drummer, and many more.

The Fête de la Musique, also known as World Music Day is a festival taking place on June 21 , the summer solstice. It began in France and has since spread to Belgium, Britain, Luxembourg , Germany, Switzerland, Israel (in Tel-Aviv), China , India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan and other countries. The idea was conceived by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1981 and first took place in 1982 . It is the occasion of a mass celebration which has grown more and more successful over the last two decades. Its purpose is to promote music in two ways: Amateur musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets. The slogan Faites de la musique (Make music), a homophone of Fête de la Musique, is used to promote this goal... and many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public. This is one of the only nights in the year where, under French law, there is no sound restriction at nighttime. One can party on without being bothered by neighbors calling the police.

SO LET'S MAKE SOME MUSIC!! (and hopefully by 2008 Canada will also celebrate La Fete de la Musique every June 21st! )

Sarcastic [ www.level4productions.com ] [ www.myspace.com ] (Level 4, Wikkid Records)
Founder of Montreal-based underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions, this amorphous being has contributed to the subculture's cabalistic causes on many levels for the past decade as label manager, DJ, producer, promoter and music critic. His love for the chugging repetitive nature of techno, acid house and hardcore genres remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts. Equally at home behind two or three decks, Sarcastic's diversity as a DJ has allowed him to perform alongside many of his musical mentors: NYC's Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech's DJ Assault, Stockholm's Thomas Krome and Slobodan, London breakbeat stars Freestylers or Deekline, or minimal techno luminaries Deadbeat or Algorithm. Meanwhile Sarcastic's productions have ranged from minimal ( Something Strange is Happening Downtown) to maximal (Sarcastic's remix of Aiwa's Pharagonescia), garnishing rave reviews internationally. Upcoming releases include a remix for live drum 'n bass outfit Hardsteppers and EPs for France's Wikkid Records and Quebec City minimal label Pertin_nce. Sarcastic continues to run against the grain, eclipsing expectations and defying conventionality in the ongoing quest for communal and individual expression through sound and music.

Sean Kosa
[ www.myspace.com ] Turbo Recordings
Sean began his sonic adventures in the womb, his mother a classically trained singer, was an active musician before and after his birth. His parents noticed his own obvious gift at a young age when, at just three months, his first words were actually the chorus of Ave Maria, sung with perfect intonation, timbre and pitch. In the words of his mother,"I was stunned!" Fast forward fifteen years; Sean is standing in front of his first amplifier holding a white Fender Stratocaster, a tidal wave of distortion and feedback cascading from the speaker. In a revelation that would forever change Sean's outlook on music he declared, "I am going electric." After playing in Toronto for the next five years he had felt that he was hitting a wall creatively and spiritually. But something special would soon emerge from the grey morass of Toronto pawn shops that would once again revitalise Sean's interest and faith in music. Working in a Scarborough heavy machine factory had allowed him to begin building a rudimentary studio in his parents basement. His purchase of a sampler/sequencer and analog synth was integral to his new vision for sound and composition. Although his sequenced drum patterns made him a pariah amongst his old friends and bandmates he stayed strong,"I don't care if you think it sounds gay," was his famous retort, "it became almost a mantra," said friend and ex-bandmate Mike Milosh. Because of this clausterphobic climate of non-acceptance that surrounded him, Sean left Toronto for Montreal in what some friends would later call, "his self-imposed period of exile.". This so-called exile would prove to be a very fruitful time for Sean. As he would put it, "beer is my monastery," and what a monastery it was! Only three years after arriving in Montreal he began working in the online gaming industry, doing various tasks such as sound design, voice overs, song composition and loop creation. Although exciting at first, Sean quickly grew weary of, as he would so often put it, "smoking the big corporate hog." The only way for Sean to stay sane was to focus on his own material, his D.J. work, his tone poems for modern dance choreographers, and his short lived fashion show sound treatments. Then, without warning, the dot com crash came and Sean was one of it's worst casualties, stripped of the financial success of his embryonic career he took a good look in the mirror, stuck his chin up and said, "I shall now create souvlaki." After a year of rolling pita Sean came to his senses, assembled some of his most beloved tracks on a CD and sent out a bunch of demo's. Then one day the phone rang, "Hello, it's Tiga, is Sean there?"
DJ Omni [ www.djomni.net ] (Akarien Productions, Elektrofone Records)
Passionate about music since he was born, it is his love for the electronic music which drew his attention to the role of the DJ and eventually led him to the rave scene. Now totalling seven years as a DJ in different types of events and venues, it is the Montreal electronic music scene that Omni calls his home. Very busy in this scene for the past three years, he was a resident of the Electro Shock events and played at Akarien Production's events like Electronic Avenue or, more recently, Electro-Chic. He has been seen mixing at major events like Ray Junior's Apocalypse 2005, Evolution Radar One 8 in the bunker and Intense 2006 in Quebec city. He has also played at the Overdose night at Parking nightclub, the biggest electro night in Montreal, and at Aria Nightclub. He is currently a resident DJ for Akarien Production's Electro Chic events at the SAT. Always evolving, DJ Omni's musical style is very eclectic, gathering influences from rock, industrial and even trance while mainly being recognised as Electro. The result is a musical exploration and a varied track selection that ensures a fresh sound night after night. In 2007, with already two releases on Elektrofone Records and a new contract with 4PlayTrax, you can expect some fresh releases from him in the near future.

Axel Klein [ www.axelklein.q-c.ca ] Akarien Productions
Hailing from Montreal, Canada and part of Akarien, Axel Klein was introduced to the party scene back in 1998 with artist like Scooter, Aquagen, Rollergirl and Green Court. This laid down the diverse roots that led himself to start collecting similar music. Doing this, this young talented DJ found himself learning a lot more about music and he started to lean more to the sounds of Trance. While collecting is favorite tracks and cd's from djs around the world, Axel came across a video of Ferry Corsten live at Innercity 1999, and was so impressed he wanted to do the same thing. Getting a job specifically to buy records and his first set of turntables, Axel Klein began to mix records just like the man he saw in the video. Mimiking his every move helped him to develop his own style, as he began to understand what exactly it was he was doing behind the decks. Taking this knowledge further, and being more and more influenced with the dutch sound of hard driving techno infused trance, Axel Klein began to expand his horizons, bending more to the fresh sound of Electro. At the present time, Axel Klein has been seen playing along side some of the best in the industry (such as Above & Beyond, Astral Projection, PBS aka Nick Roland & Dave Wright, Lori The HiFi Princess, Neophyte, Preach, Niklas Harding, just to name a few), and try to improve himself every time to bring something fresh to the scene playing the upfront Electro and Minimal. The fresh sound of Electro makes him want to destroy the dancefloor more than ever!

DjEver [ www.myspace.com ] (mix thursday debut!)

With over 15 years of experience, Houston born, DjEver has spun in nightclubs, lounges, art galleries, and private parties in both the USA and Canada. Always curious and unconventional, his love of all genres of music infuse his process and production with a deliberate and provocative vibe. DjEver has collaborated on productions with Lesbians on Ecstasy, John Wilson (Meat Beat Manifesto) and William Kontos. "Keep It Art"

The Revealers [ www.myspace.com ]
The Revealers, in their current formation, have been together since the summer of 2006. The parts that make up The Revealers, however, have been active in the Montreal music scene for some time now. Basically they're made up of the trio of Mark, Nic and Anthony who've been playing together since 2004 and Rick from The Wells, a popular and well established Montreal group. Add beer, mix well, and you get this blend of hard driving rhythm based rock and soul with thick vocal harmonies that keeps people coming back for more. Nic and Anthony had played together in elementary school, and after all the sex, drugs, and detention had to go their separate ways until Nic and Mark were looking to form a band a few years ago. Nic suggested they call Tony and it was apparent right away that this would be a perfect fit. The three of them practised for a while in their laboratory and eventually started recording their sketches in studios around town, supplying the soundtrack to a television pilot about strippers and convincing themselves to take it to the stage and perform live. They landed a gig as the house band at Boodha Bar for open mic nights with Sebastien of Dead Messenger and Liquid. They started playing at Honey Martin around then as well. That formation went their separate ways a year later and one drunken evening Rick turned up at one of the last performances and joined in. The night went on and the timing was right, the very next week they began rehearsing. In their short time together, The Revealers have played at the Montreal Fringe Festival , various bars, had a memorable night at Rick's family's corn roast, and landed a weekly Saturday night gig at Honey Martin Pub – where they can still be found. The Revealers influences include Dylan, Neil young, the Rolling stones, The Band, The Beatles, Beck, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Townes Van Zandt, James Brown, David Bowie, Taj Mahal, the Grateful Dead, Booker T & the m.g's, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Police, Lou Reed, Gram Parsons, the Beastie boys, Mississippi John Hurt, Kings of Leon, Mogwai, Daniel Lanois, Outkast, Johnny Cash, Bullfrog, Link Wray, George Clinton, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Peter Tosh, Ben Harper & the innocent criminals, Garcia & Grisman, Doc Watson, Curtis Mayfield, The Clash, AC/DC, Howlin' Wolf, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Led Zeppelin, Toots & the Maytals, Blind Melon, the Allman brothers, Christina Aguilera, alcohol, bowling, hockey , pictures, stories, our friends, women, everyday shit, once in a lifetime shit, the modern world, the ancient world, another world (the soap), Wal Mart, Oprah, and Jesus. Their ultimate goal is world domination. No one is safe. More communications to come….

Mars Hill [ www.myspace.com ]
Mars Hill Is a band that is not easy to label. The year was 2003 when the booming city of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island gave birth to one of the most original and finest bands of the 21st century. YES, believe the hype. The music of Mars Hill is genre-defying, blending elements of reggae, folk, rock, jazz and hip hop. Ethereal keyboards, thick bass lines, jazzy drums and climatic trumpet give the band a psychedelic 1967 Venice, California feel-while the vocals of frontman Devin Casario haphazardly drag the bands sound through Kerouac's New York and Harrison's Rishikesh. Their debut album Oxcart was released in October 2004 just in time to garner an ECMA nomination for Alternative Recording of the Year at the 2005 ECMAs in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The album was engineered and produced by Darren Gallop, a member of Slowcoaster through his production company East Cape Productions. In May of 2006, Mars Hill released, "Fate Chance Luck Dance." A significant departure from their debut album-"Fate..." is a classic record that cuts across all musical genres while maintaining a coherant focus. The album was engineered by Adam Gallant and mixed by Darren Gallop. In October of 2006 Mars Hill relocated to Montreal where, "they shall proceed." Members of the band include: Devin Casario, vocals; Chloe Cork, trumpet/keyboards/vocals; Dean Dunsford, bass/guitar and David Weale on drums. Auxiliary members include: (but not limited to) Kevin Labchuk, Chris Corrigan, John Rehder, Sean Butler, Jon King and Joel Sutherland. Mars Hill are not only one of the best looking bands from the East Coast, they are also the most educated- courtesy of the Canadian government. Do your research. Frankie Bones
/ artists (F)
Real Name: Frank Mitchell
Profile: Frankie Bones was the original and first DJ coming out of the Brooklyn Underground during the mid 80's with the vision of what was yet to come on the Global front of Electronic Dance Music culture. His early mission came in the many releases of Fourth Floor and Nugroove Records. In a time when timing meant everything, the buzz of his early works caught the attention of the rapidly growing scenesters in the London Orbital M25 raves during the Summer Of Love in 1988.

Those early "Bonesbreaks" vinyls led Frankie to playing at a rave called "Energy" which had 25,000 people. With the scene already reaching critical mass, Bones had set off a fierce bidding war between XL Recordings and Deconstruction Records which led to two albums by Musto & Bones.

The U.K. was very impressed by Frankie's unique Brooklyn style which was a raw-freestylish-bass-in-your-bass-bins-but-electro-bass style that was raw enough to keep the entire scene and industry at bay, waiting for the underground to bubble over. With gigs, remixing and production work pouring in by the truckload, Frankie ventured out into the early European scene playing key breaking parties in France, Holland, Italy, Denmark and Germany. Each country taking note of his style and wanting to license music.

From all the success in Europe, a booking would follow in Los Angeles based strictly on his success in Europe. In fact the L.A. promoters did not understand where the Brooklyn accent was coming from? But the West Coast scene had just started and Frankie held down Bi-Monthly events in London, L.A. and in NYC.

His vision of STORMrave made history. As well as Sonic Groove where he sold vinyl.

The Rogue Element:

Since signing a two-album deal with the reputable and eclectic Exceptional Records in 2004, The Rogue Element has taken the breakbeat world by storm. A string of singles received instant support from the Plump DJs, Freestylers, Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, The Crystal Method, Hyper and Rennie Pilgrem and culminated in Ben being awarded the 'Best Breakthrough Producer' award at the prestigious Breakspoll International Breakbeat Awards at Fabric. In addition to this the acclaimed debut album 'Rogue Rock' was released in September 2005, which received a nomination for 'Best Album'.

2006 has seen The Rogue Element continue in a prolific manner with remixes of some of the biggest names in breakbeat (Stanton Warriors, Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, the Crystal Method) and drum and bass (Noisia). DJ tours have taken him all over Central and Eastern Europe, to the Far East, and to Australia and New Zealand. Continued collaborations with Tom Real, available on Functional, have been similarly lauded and have succeeded in crossing over to the electro scene (He's So Hot Right Now). A second studio album is currently in its early stages and is expected to be released in around September 2007 [ www.therogueelement.net ]

Sarcastic

Founder of Montreal-based underground electronic music pantheon Level 4 Productions, this amorphous being has contributed to the subculture's cabalistic causes on many levels for the past decade as label manager, DJ, producer, promoter and music critic. Possessed since childhood with a needling drive to splice together discrete musical compositions, first with cassette decks, microphones, CD players or 8-tracks, it was only a matter of time before Sarcastic was introduced to his lifetime partner: the Technics 1200. His love for the chugging repetitive nature of techno, acid house and hardcore genres remains informed by an early appreciation for hip-hop, stoner rock, jazz and psychedelia of all sorts. Equally at home behind two or three decks, Sarcastic's diversity has allowed him to perform alongside many of his musical mentors: NYC's Frankie Bones, Detroit ghetto-tech's DJ Assault, Stockholm's Thomas Krome and Slobodan, London breakbeat stars Freestylers or Deekline, or minimal techno luminaries Deadbeat or Algorithm. Lengthy local residencies have seen Sarcastic spinning anything from pure tek, minimal and experimental techno to acid, breakbeats, DnB, booty, house and tek-house; recently championing the "vinyl" movement, Sarcastic is even known to work classic rock, funk, hip hop, trip hop, blues, jazz and bluegrass into his carefully programmed DJ sets. Meanwhile Sarcastic's productions have ranged from minimal (Something Strange is Happening Downtown) to maximal (Sarcastic's remix of Aiwa's Pharagonescia), garnishing rave reviews internationally. Sarcastic continues to run against the grain, eclipsing expectations and defying conventionality in the ongoing quest for communal and individual expression through sound and music.

PHILGOOD

PHILGOOD (Philippe Granja) Having spent more than half of his life behind turntables, Philgood has always given priority to music that takes the listener into new dimensions, stimulating dance, excitement, and an escape from the rigors of everyday life. Montreal's most prestigious clubs battle for his skills, Rave enthusiasts become obsessed with his persona, and Philgood has by now caught the ears and attention of electronica scenesters the world over. Through his residency at such renowned Montreal clubs and event as Sona, Swirl, Arrival, Celebration and via his performances overseas (France, Switzerland, USA, Colombia, Hong Kong) Philgood has dropped records alongside techno luminaries including Laurent Garnier, Tiesto, Richie Hawtin, DJ Rush, Sven Väth, Green Velvet, Felix da Housecat, Timo Maas and John Aquaviva. Focussing on the genre of electro, Philgood has seen the style creep stealthily into the already-diverse array of musical styles readily transmitted through his DJ sets. [ ]

FU ANCKO
François Pelletier aka Fu Ancko and Francko Da WRA at the beginning had to calm his energy through music. He was ten years old then and he was fascinated by the drums and the bass. But back then his interest in music did not grow any further.
Many years have passed since he discovered electronic music, and his childhood dream of becoming a DJ reappeared, back when dancemix compilations played an important role for him. But then he found himself short of cash to quench his thirst for electronic music. Since his appearance in the electronic music scene, Francko has travelled across Quebec; from Montréal to Québec, from Québec to Victo, from Victo to Beauce...it has no end.
He has demonstrated in his style a maturity and a particular energy. In the beginning it was the trance and acid-trance what interested him the most. Today looking for challenge, he prefers to specialize in a style that looks more like the break beats with house and electro sounds. [ ]

MIX THURSDAY >>>>
Launched in April 2005, Saphir's Mix Thursday set out to present the best DJs and artists in Montreal's underground electronic music community, combining all of the scenes promoters, DJs and producers into a unique communal concept curated by Broken Crew's Rhys Taylor, Level 4 Productions' "Sarcastic" Steve and Drunken Midget's Tipsy T.... To that end we've since invited over 200 DJs, live artists, visual artists (and even standup comedians) to perform, focussing on local artists but also featuring international headliners such as Frankie Bones (NYC), DJ Assault (Detroit), Deekline (London, UK), Ali B (London, UK) or Caps & Jones (NYC). Committed to an open mandate, Mix Thursday is based upon the idealistic premise that a mutual ground can be found within the many diverse forms of underground musical expression and as such we regularly explore various genres including but not limited to: live performances, laptop performances, break beats, booty and ghetto-tech, electro, techno, minimal techno, house, tech-house, drum and bass, dubstep, grime, afrofunk, baile funk, dancehall, reggae, etc.

also you CAN GO HERE >> [ www.level4productions.com ] to see the whole MIX art Archive...
including all of our flyers, posters and propaganda, designed in house, mostly by Mix co-founder Rhys Taylor.

In Februrary of 2007 Mix was joined by Project Mayhem's TGIT upstairs at Saphir. Thank God It's Thursday showcase music from the local rave and afterhours scene focusing on trance, techno, hardstyle, freeform, hardcore and more.
