Ever since that fateful encounter with Tiga in 1995, during which the latter urged him to keep producing, Intoccabile has been an active member of the local underground. Having taken part in the drum and bass / jungle scene for 10 years, as a dj, promoter and propducer, he is the author of many local anthems. Intoccabile is the inventor of a mature, original and homegrown Grime sound, which could be described as a cross between Birmingham instrumental Grime, neurofunk and minimal techno. Intoccabile’s accomplishments include the creation in 2001 of Fyutchaflex recordings and events, the publishing of a number of aesthetics books in which the foundations for a theory of “ Forward music “ were outlined, the release of a number of key Grime singles, the launch of the “ Forward music “ weekly at the Passeport bar, the launch of the Paradigm-X series of events, the hosting of one of the very first drum and bass radio shows on the fm dial ( Radio Centre-Ville, 102.3 fm ), innumerable sets in bars, clubs and raves. He has won and has been nominated for various music awards ( La Nuit de la Chanson, Cégeps en spectacles, Gala Diversité 1997, etc. ).

I doubt Noisia will design a set meant to please the purists, the hardcore dnb heads, even though there will certainly be dnb. They were booked because they can do a little bit of everything ( house, electro, drum and bass ) and indeed, my intuition tells me that they will try to please everyone.

What a great opportunity this could have been for some of our locals.

To me, the fact that he cannot be pidgeon-holed or subsumed under, say, breaks, electro, progressive or minimal, among other genres, is a plus. I have a feeling that Snork doesn't really care about " labels "... it's all about making music... good music, isn't it, Snork ?

Why wouldn't they monitor this website ? It's a great database, full of information. And that calendar ... very handy.

I remember someone from here ( where is the search option ? I think it was in the thread where we discussed the fact that certain persons were fined for flyering ) saying that he saw, in a police station, with his very own eyes, a police officer browsing the [ rave.ca ] website.

Network administrators intercepting e-mails to the demand of the employer.

Computer monitoring software ( keystroke loggers, Instant message monitors, screenshot tools, etc. )

Cameras placed in plain view to stimulate the productivity of employees and prevent losses ( ie Couche-Tard ).

Hidden cameras.

Employers listening to messages on your voicemail and monitoring your conversations ( nature and lenght of conversations ).

And the list goes on.

I read an interesting story this week about the Wal-Mart spy scandal.

Here is a fragment taken from the Wake up Wal-Mart website :

" As revealed by recent articles in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal , Wal-Mart has hired a number of former CIA, FBI and Justice Department officials to create a sophisticated counter surveillance team to spy on its employees.

Several weeks ago, Wal-Mart revealed that one of the technicians on its Threat, Research and Response team (the group responsible for surveillance) was eavesdropping on conversations between Wal-Mart employees and a reporter from the New York Times. In addition, Wal-Mart revealed that other non-Wal-Mart employees were either recorded or had their text messages intercepted, but would not reveal the identities of those people or what search terms were used to do its surveillance. I think this video is quite amusing as an allegory of what Grime has become.

But - no offence Screwhead, I'm just thinking about the hordes of people who think this video is the funniest thing they've ever seen in their life - I think it's sad to laugh at people with disabilities... and I think it's even worse to laugh at people with disabilities who are trying their best, like a lot of people here, to " express themselves creatively " through a style of music ( here : Grime ) or some other form of expression.

I would like to thank everyone that came out last week ! Sick night. Had lots of fun !

Lill Unseen's set was nothing short of amazing. She is underrated, underbooked, underappreciated. I urge all the promoters I know to book her as she is one of the best dj's I've had the pleasure of working with.

Snork's enthusiasm behind his laptop was contagious. He did not disappoint. I can only describe his sound as being full of thought, eerie, mad at times ! An excruciating amount of preparation went into his set and it showed. One of the best underground live acts in this city. To everyone who liked his set, Snork has a forthcoming release called " Coccinelle " ( see artwork above ).

Thank you Jah style for you know what, and for dropping mad jungle riddims at the Passeport !

Bringing people to the event...

Is it the promoter's sole responsibility ? Or is this responsibility, ideally, shared with the dj's / vj's / whoever is performing ?

That's a tough one.

I would go with the first option. But even though it's the promoter's responsibility, I feel everyone involved should do what they can to promote the event in order to make it a successful one.

I want you all to post some thoughts.

Do you think dj's in Montreal are, in general, well-paid or underpaid ?

Even though it's not all about the money, I think it's nice, at the end of the night, to be given something for you effort.

What do you people think about set dj fees ( dj fee is not relative to attendance, meaning that if a dj plays for an empty room, he gets paid in full anyway ).

Regarding hybrids ( dj - producers ) such as Subtone, Stalker, Sase One, Generic, Rcola, etc... Most people I know think these dj's fees are absolutely outrageous ( I don't know about Rcola ). But I always say that they should bear in mind that these dj's are high profile artists who have released material on numerous labels... I think that the dj fee should reflect not only preparation time, dj'ing experience, but also the profile of the dj.

What do you think ?

First thing first.

I want to thank HOST ONE and NITROUS for dropping some bombs at the PASSEPORT last week.

Even though Host one doesn't want me to, I feel I have to apologize for the technical issues that made his set nearly impossible. First, there were some uncontrollable power problems in the dj booth. Second, the vibrations coming from the subwoofer made the needles jump. I am working hard to find solutions and I'm pretty positive that these problems will be resolved next thursday, with the help of Rawali and, of course, the Passeport's sound technician.

Second.... I really, really don't understand why Host one is not booked more often. He is professionnal, absolutely dedicated, he has exciting and exclusive material that no one else in this city has and an excellent technique as a dj. He is underrated and underbooked and I urge every promoter I know to book him.

And... THANK YOU NOAH for you know what !
