Kevin Joseph Sawka aka KJ SAWKA... BIO: Man…or machine? That’s the question that listeners, show-goers, critics, and colleagues have been asking about Kevin Sawka since the Seattle drummer started experimenting with drum ‘n bass styles in the late ‘90s in the band Siamese. The upcoming release of Cyclonic Steel, produced under the name KJ Sawka, again demonstrates the superhuman quality of his playing and production. Cyclonic Steel is a study in what electronic music has the potential to be, particularly with Sawka’s vast background in electronica, his desire to push those realms forward, and also his adeptness with acoustic sounds, jazz, and rock techniques. Seattle writer James Kirchmer exclaimed that Sawka "attacked his kit with a frenetic precision so impressive I speculated that he'd once been replaced by a drum machine, and had spent all the years since working out an elaborate revenge." Sawka’s music isn’t you typical drum n bass affair. Instead, the listener is presented with a sweaty, rhythmic journey while meshing elements first presented in the late 90s as the “Music of the Millennium” (see: Chemical Brothers, Prodigy). It’s a record that gives off one vibe listening to it in your car or home, but is a totally different monster in the club... Kevin Sawka didn’t invent the drum kit. He didn’t invent jungle beats, and he didn’t invent drum ‘n bass. he's come twice, once was at the el mocambo (downstairs) and it was rammed to fuck, think they got like 450 through the doors and it was a completely amazing fucking night of music. one of the two or three best sets I saw that year, easily. the second time was a busy as hell night in the summer, going against two heavily attended dnb events (ed rush at one and hype at another), plus a ton of other notable non-dnb things and an ambitious promoter booked him at a huge place like the opera house and it tanked. If it was at another venue and not against huge competition, it would been fine. so say what you will. his first time in toronto had a completely packed venue and got ecstatic reviews. I'd love to see him here again. |
