ha yes I can confirm the spore cold was in fact real... basically everyone involved in the organization caught it... mind you our immune systems were all shot due to lack of sleep but anyways...

Probably the result of not having any ventilation and having 500+ people all breathing the same recycled air. 3810 is not the best winter venue because of the lack of any real heating in the main room.

Out of curiosity... have any of you ever decided not to go to a party once you find out it's at 3810?

I just refuse to ever deal with the owner of 3810 ever again. If it comes down to it I'd rather downgrade or cancel the party.

It's a shame, that spot has a lot of good things going for it.

And more live acts, I like to see the artist behind the music.

Getting into this thread late... but WOW... a few points:

1. If Antonino can tag you on facebook it's because you added him as a friend.

2. If your under 14 years old you shouldn't be at a rave in the first place.

3. Go look at pictures of clubs or after hour type events and you can clearly see that taking picture of girls is not a new trend.

4. There are girls who seem to like being photographed by him too.

That said I've personally never had a problem with the guy. He's always in a good mood and the guy is like the most devout party goer I've ever seen; I can track him for at least 7-8 years going to almost every party, the guys got stamina.

I've heard stories about him getting possibly too intense and freaking out girls. But honestly I know a lot of guys who are good people, but just fail miserably at communicating with the opposite sex. I'm 100% sure that dealing with creepy guys is nothing new for attractive girls who like to go out, and that most of you have dealt with much worse before. Don't hate on the guy for having bad game.

Fucking [ rave.ca ] It shows people's serotonin levels are off during the week.

Originally it was just like: you suck, your music ruined my night, and your a prick for thinking your set would have worked at that time. Not much to work with...

Anyways it does shed some light on something... longer extended breakdowns with intricate atmospheres work well when your lying down in your bed, not so much on the dance-floor for some.

Regardless the idea behind the night was for it to be all live, which means there will be mistakes and experimentation going on. If you want perfect psy all night long you can go to any other event any other weekend and hear it. The djs will for the most part always deliver what you seem to be looking for...

The major problem with e.d.m right now is that it's not so much about creativity and musical ideas as much as its about how well produced and loud something sounds. It's really stopping a lot of talent from getting noticed...

Technically the place has no capacity whatsoever as there are a couple of things completely against the fire code still, there not really obvious to firefighters off hand though, has something to do with the thickness of the doors and the width of the exit hallway.

Alright so first off I'd like to thank everyone who came out with smiles on and made the party what it was :)

I'd also really like to thank everyone that helped out with the set-up and taking down at the end, and also to all the people who worked during the evening. I don't feel like naming everyone for fear of forgetting someone, but you all know who you are, and it was greatly appreciated.

All the live acts were amazing, I'm really excited to see all the talent coming out of Montreal. Big things are in store for us that's for sure.

Now that that's been said I'd like to put one stupid thing into light about my live. There wasn't really a huge "mastering" issue with it. What happened was that near the end of Mekkanikka's set there was a huge bass drop which really pissed of John (the venue owner) so he came out and forced us to lower the sound. I literally had to physically fight him off the mixing board. You have NO FUCKING IDEA how much it hurts to work literally night after night for 4 months just trying to get your sound as good as possible for the event, to fail classes at university because your out all night looking for a new venue cuz you got fucked out of your first one, to only sleep 3 hours between thursday and sunday trying to put all of this together and then have the fucking sound lowered before your set; then having to keep a smile on watching people leave the dance floor.

Wtv...

Anyways here's a link to the track I used to open my live: [ soundcloud.com ] Listen to it and tell me honestly if you really think it's that bad; and if so let me know what I need to improve cuz it's hard to get good constructive criticism.

So all in all, despite the numerous things that tend to blow up in your face when your throwing an event, Spore was a success for us and has encouraged both Sketchy Labs and Digital Garden to continue throwing raves. To be completely honest this was only our second event, and boy did we learn a lot.

See you all at the next one.

And as for the edirol interfaces def. not recommended, but if you found a good deal on one used I don't see why not... how bad cant hey really be?

Also if you want to use a firewire device you should get a firewire expansion card sort of for your laptop. Make sure it uses a texas instruments chip set and your good to go.

Yeah I was gonna suggest the same, but I def. wouldn't call it quality.

But it'll do the job for a while, and I guess that's what you need. The next step up in quality is probably at about the 800$ mark, you'd probably be better off spending that money on a good pair of monitors / headphones for now anyways.

Check out Edirol's interfaces too I heard they weren't so bad.

I'd just like to interject / shamelessly plug myself here, but I will be doing a psytrance live set on Dec. 11th in which I will be playing as much as possible live on a friggin keyboard. And I don't use ableton either.

Rawali don't stick all psytrance producers in the same boat, there are live acts which perform a lot live. Check out artists like Simon Posford and S.U.N Project. Artists in all genres press play and walk away. It's the way the scene is. Obviously if you produce shit in a band, then it's a lot simpler to have the band come up on stage and play.

If you ask me, the best thing about a live is that the music he or she is playing comes 100% from the artist. Every detail down to the simplest percussion elements were of his or her choosing. That said I find you get a more complete and intricate artistic expression when listening to a live. You really get to explore someone's sound more in depth.

And let's be frank, anybody can be a dj now a days. It really takes minimal investment and time to learn how, especially with repetitive 4/4 music. Buy about 1000$ worth of gear and spend about a year practicing and your pretty good to go. You don't really even have to buy your music either. Shit I can throw a glow-stick in the air at a rave and chances are it'll hit a DJ. I'm not knocking it down, I'm sure there are djs that can spin circles around others, but from my subjective experience there really isn't much to it. Cue tracks, beatmatch, mix creatively, then repeat about 12-15 times and your good for the night.

I dare anybody to say the same thing about producing a live act. It takes at least 10x more time and investment. Shit I've heard everyone who's posted here from your starts. To be honest you've all been good djs from the get go. I really haven't noticed a difference in any of your mixing abilities from the first time I've heard any of you. But holy shit has everyone who's posted in this forum production abilities improved since they started. That says something about the time and effort it takes to actually produce your own music.

That said I honestly don't really care anymore as to how the live act goes about doing their live. So long as they don't fake turning nobs and stuff, that shit really gets on my nerves. You may be fooling 3/4 of the crowd, but for those of us who know how stuff works, your just making yourself look stupid. I'd rather see someone honestly just press the space bar then someone fake shit.

In the end it comes down to the artist to decide how he or she wants to perform their live. Some of us are better musician's then others, some people are better technically in the studio. The point of the live is to take what your specifically good at and showcase it. Nobody should feel they have to change their way of performing in order to satisfy others. Like you may not be a good musician and have difficulty playing parts live, but you kick ass when it comes to mixing and mastering; so why should you compromise the quality of your act?

My last live act basically consisted of me first adjusting eq, and compression settings for the first 1/2 of every track to compensate for the different production dates and values of the individual tracks, then the second 1/2 was spent flailing my arms around like a lunatic, cuz let's face it, it's really hard not to when 200+ people are dancing and cheering you on for something you've dedicated your life too.

Ha trust me Joé is a good friend of ours and was on our list of potential bookings, all I meant, and in retrospect should have said is that if we had a good spot to put him in we would of. But when trying to create a good progression of music throughout the night it's really hard to make everybody happy.

Anyways if all doesn't go horribly wrong this probably won't be the last event we throw. Actually if all goes well with something were doing tomorrow something pretty huge might happen for the rave scene in Montreal, but I can't say anything until it's all down with our signatures on paper. That said it's almost inevitable that cosmic will be booked in the future.

And in terms of live I think there will be more then a few surprises in store :D

We booked them last party, and we decided to try and bring some new live acts this time.

We decided on bringing a major headliner: Mekkanikka

Then we decided on bringing both Kode Six and Virtual Light this time around to sort of present the "biggest" live acts to come out of Montreal.

Then we have 2 up and coming live acts from Quebec city who are starting to attract a lot of attention and then we have myself and e.t. who are organizing the party.

Once you put all those lives in we just didn't have any room for cosmic orgasm. I'm sure you know their style of music, and hopefully you can agree that putting them at either 10pm or am just doesn't do their music any justice.

Anyways they've been getting lots of bookings now anyways, there have been plenty of opportunities to see them live this summer. You can't really say the same for any of our acts.

Were really just trying to offer something different to the scene. Putting our own twist on things.

Simon Baring has worked closely with people like Nano Records, Glade Festival & Twisted Records between 2005-2008. In December 2006, after an impressive gig in Switzerland in front of 1000 people and Twisted label owner, Simon Posford (Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Younger Brother), he was made an official Twisted DJ.

Since starting out he’s played in the USA, Israel, Russia, Canada, Luxembourg, Ibiza, Morocco, Costa Rica, Greece, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Finland and Hungary with more bookings pouring in all the time.
Widely acclaimed wherever he’s played, the gigs keep getting bigger and better! It’s been a meteoric rise in the short time he’s been on the circuit.
He left Twisted in 2008 and now is concentrating on his Minimal Mayhem sound. Although he still plays some Twisted material in his sets, he is now concentrating more on the techier end of things. He plays everything and anything that will mix together. Bits of techno, electro, tech house, minimal, progressive and psychedelia. A non conformist, he likes to keep the dancefloor guessing. Whilst floating between the genres he still keeps it deep, driving, sexy and psychedelic.

bahahahaha antonino... pick up artist....

Noah you should have added: "One specific technique that you more then likely will encounter at any rave in montreal is the "walk around and take pictures of everyone" technique. The idea is that women like to have their pictures taken at social events so they can then take said pictures and put them up on various social networking sites, in order to prove how cool and social they really are. Thus what men will do is walk around with a camera and take pictures of any (usually underage) woman they see. This will then lead to conversation and the women eventually asking to have the picture of themselves sent to them. BAM instant contact info; women beware.
