It is time to think outside the box. Do you celebrate your birthday, or your un-birthday? You have 364 un-birthdays a year (365 during that misnomer known as a leap year), that seems to me like a much better reason to celebrate than that one measly day that is your official birthday.

I just got back from Toronto.

While there I hooked up with Saigon. He passed me his new CD; it is too hot, you cannot touch this.

I also hooked up with Sixteen Armed Jack. He showed me his stack of new dubs; you don't even realize, so do not pretend like you do.

Marcus was busy tearing it up all over the city.

This jam is going down in history; trust me.

This is the event that dreams are made of. Raggalicious dreams where every track is a dubplate special booming out of a proper surround soundsystem, with everyone busting out on the dancefloor, or relaxing on the mezzanine smoking a cognac dipped vanilla flavoured blunt.

Someone told me today that there are too many people playing at this party, that there is actually too much dopeness booked on this particular night, that I should cut down the amount of artists who will be throwing down because the MTL party people will not be able to handle it... yeah, right. Every party should be this dope. It is time for a paradigm shift; I'm raising the bar.

On Saturday March 20th, 2004, Cognitive Vibe will be holding their second annual ragga jungle mash-up event:

Asphalt Jungle: The Sound Under the City

If you were not one of the four hundred people fortunate enough to witness the madness that went down last year, do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Both the Surgeon General and our lawyers have requested that we not release the line-up all at once for fear of the mass chaos and anxiety due to over-excitement that would inevitably ensue. We can however assure you that you will not want to sleep on this event; it is jam packed with solid ragga producers and selectors as well as a live band to kick off the night right.

The venue, although previously unused, is huge and equipped with full bar facilities. There is a mezzanine for those of you who wish to chill and a massive dance floor for those of you who came to bug out proper. Visuals will be projected three-fold and conducted by a video jockey for those who wish to mind trip.

The sound system is no joke. Believe that, you will not be listening to drum and hum, but rather a proper surround sound booming system.

As with all Cognitive Vibe sponsored events, this will be a strictly enforced plus 18 event.

All of this for the low low price of 10$.

Do not sleep, mark off March 20th on your calendars today.

I have been hearing about that particular venue since back in the day, but it was the first time that I actually was given an opportunity to view the location from the inside. I must say that it is certainly an excellent set-up for intimate events such as iDJ. The separation between floors allows the venue’s staff to control the legal drinking crowd with little or no difficulty, while leaving the dance floor for... well, I suppose those who are there to dance.

I suggest inviting a proper video jockey the next time that this venue is used, as the huge screen dominating the wall behind the dj booth screams for more participation. This is not to say that I did not enjoy the campy videos that I was fortunate enough to witness, but that being said, when the tools are available to you, take advantage.

The technical difficulties were abound while I was there and thus I am unable to comment on the disc jockeys' sets that I was present for in regards to skill. However, as far as track selection is concerned, it is abundantly clear to me that Regimental buys his records via the Internet and not at DNA. Either that, or he makes frequent trips to Play De Record in Toronto where I was fortunate enough to pick up most of those very same tracks.

Big up to the crew who do it for the love each and every month.

Adding to the flavour will be the 2-guitar assault of Marcus Paquin (Dr. Noh) and Matt Lederman (Parkside Jones, Solel), creating post-rock soundscapes to the drum n' beats mix. Ryhna Thompson (Ark of Infinity, PSJ) will be contributing her unique melodies on trumpet and keys, as well as Peter X (Finite Records, Parkside Jones) on bass and keys.

DJ accomplice, a founding member of the iDJ crew and a past contributor to Junglist Fridays at Blue Dog, will be filling in throughout the night with his hip-hop influenced set of jungle beats.

Speaking of recording, accomplice and MayDay's set will also be recorded. Do not miss this full two hours of dancehall jump-up jungle ragga mash-up maddness.

Please note that accomplice and MayDay will be spinning on a pair of American Audio decks. For those of you who do not know, that means that we will be able to pitch +/- 50 (and play in reverse if we feel so inclined). What this means for your everyday junglist is that the aforementioned selectors will be granted the ability to mix in old-school (i.e. 150-160 bpm) with new-school (i.e. 170-190 bpm) mash-up business resulting in nothing short of dancefloor madness. If you were at C'est Un Garcon, you will know what I am talking about.
