How about everybody just plays 128kbps rips taken off the internet of tracks made with pirated copies of their music software, then records that set in 128 again to put in on the internet, so somebody can try to rip a track off it, and put it in 128kbps, so they can play it at a party somewhere, using a pirated copy of Traktor?

Sounds like a win-win situation to me!!
I'm feeling yay right now..

How's this for whack:

I'm sitting on the beach at Eclipse this year on Sunday morning, and some DJ (I didn't bother finding out who because I was enjoying kicking back in the sun with some scotchka too much to mess it up by standing up and walking 20 metres) is playing some average sounding dubstep.

He's spinning some Caspa track when all of a sudden Mary Anne Hobbs' voice comes on all "You're listening to Breezeblock on Radio 1, that was blah blah blah by blah blah blah..."

Fucking guy was playing radio rips. At Eclipse no less.

Cheap.
I'm feeling focused right now..

I think context is important here. In this case it is someone (screwhead) who has little money to spend and makes no money off what he does. I wouldn't make a big stink about that. If the guy were pulling in money he would probably be the first one to spend it all on DnB.

If someone is making money off other people's work without compensating them though, then they are a thief.

Having people 'call out' others because they claim they are using downloaded or unreleased material sounds kind of elitist and lame to me.

On the flip side, I am saddened that the music industry is in shambles at all levels, but I don't think there is much we can do about that now, eventually as the whole internet culture matures new ways of making money will come about, but until then it seems pretty dark.
I'm feeling meow right now..

Music, an artform which has been around for thousands of years, is an informed opinion. Technical excellence isn't expression or inovation. It's dry, cerebral, gear wankery. Up there with being good at football or fixing up your hot rod. Getting paid to induce people doing drugs, drunk, and shaking their ass into some primitive mating ritual is not a business model. It's a given. Music from every other decade, century, or millenium accomplished exactly the same thing. Over and over and over. Like architecture, the grandiose pyramids, churches and temples of yesteryear have been replaced with cookie cutter suburban homes and condos. The hammer that built them stayed the same. The conditions which allowed the prior have been erased. Good riddance. Who in their right mind wants to be a peasant Mason or a slave for the Pharaoh?

With that out of the way, speaking on behalf of Montreal and doing dubplate mixes without producing the dubplates yourself, or at least having the personal OK from the artist is the lamest thing I have ever read. I am ashamed to have discovered this happened. I have not been keeping up. I am obviously out the loop. Thank goodness.

At least this thread shows the passion and dedication is not dead. I fully support that.

Good times.

PS: I buy all my music. Or at least get it for free from the people who make it and willingly share it. Also, software.
I'm feeling belligerent right now..

Good post Connor_Bw ! but seriously you didnt know people did that? have you heard of youtube?
hehe people are taking any kind of music and using them as their own! ie : theres a lot of MANGA Remix video using copyrighted works (without permission) . Also theres a lot of people doin shitty mashups etc! so yeah nothing new here ! people have the need to create and if they cant create the building blocks ...well they will start to use others people work to build a new meaning to it!

this is the Remix generation and rather than giving a created static piece of art Artists will have to sell a dynamic experience!
example: sample pack for remixing or maybe a new downloadable content for DJ HERO etc...

people nowadays want to feel like they are part of the process ! thats why shitty guitar hero (and rock band) is so popular!

anyways im really happy to read different opinion and i hope this thread will live forever so we can discuss the matter without any animosity

And when it comes to things like "the industry" saying that you shouldn't expect to play media for as long as you own it, I've got zero problem grabbing/using anything pirated.

BTW, I have always bought my music. I have waisted/invested thousands on records and CD's, but never on mp3's. Maybe the public is ready to pay roughly the same price for an inferior product, but not me. Maybe one day the music industry will come up with a standard equivalent or better than the wave file, then I'll think about it.

Um... Isn't that exactly what a FLAC file (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is???
Don't a large number of online music stores already cary this format as well as the original uncompressed WAV files???

Has the FLAC become the standard or do you have to pay more for it, like waves?

well, Serato doesn't support FLAC (unless it's been put into a really recent update)..

Traktor does, dunno about Torq..
