Exclusive rights

Several exclusive rights typically attach to the holder of a copyright:

Technically, us reposting the content of news articles and not just linking to them is breaking copyright law, as is your server downloading/saving pictures linked from other sites. If someone wanted to be a dick about it, they could very much sue you for each individual image you're re-hosting without permission.

For your house on a lake example... If you draw a picture of a house on a lake, and I go to the same place and draw the same house on a lake, that's not really a problem.

If you publish/copyright the drawing, then yes, it would be illegal for me to 're-create' the drawing, even if it's not based on your drawing specifically and I just happen to sit at the same spot and find it nice enough to draw.
