once again this most of this comunity is fuckin' clued out....

1st off... as much as promoters book dj's as an "attraction"...

they are there to supply the music, NOT TO PROMOTE THE PARTY!!!

if ppl don't show up... thats bad promo... not bad music.

as far as getting paid, lynzyn... regardless of how long you've been playing in your bedroom...

if you've only been playing out for a year chances are you don't have much reputation and are still just starting to become familiar with bigger systems, i'm not that familiar with you or your music, but there is a good chance that at this point in your career any promoters who book you are doing you a favour by helping you build that reputation and big system experiece that will hopefully in the long run get you paid.

consider those free gigs kinda like an intership...

when you start to understand your own worth a little better you won't have any trouble asking for some loot.

my 2 cents.
I'm feeling warm unicorn jizz right now..

on devrait se créer une association de travailleurs...un syndicat hahaha

so that way every dj will be payed because no djs without the permit could
work and the djs could are playing for free could be arrested
I'm feeling undersociated! right now..

funny how lynzyn changes the sotry. first youve been dj'ing for 6 years partyiing for 1 and now its turned into 15
I think this whole thread is a waste of time, and some reason for this chick to get attention. in a negetive way it seems. and this should just be closed

puresexmegs read up what she said, you are wrong. She said she's been djingp in parties for 1 year, djing for fun for 6 years, and partying for 15 (which i doubt, because i'd know her if she's been partying that long, aint many of us).
I'm feeling empathetic right now..

It's bad promo to book djs who won't bring anyone to their party... If djs brought more people to parties then the promoters would book them more often. It's not for the music, there are 1000s of djs in Montreal, and 10000s who live around the city. If you want a style of music played, there many options. If I want to make money from a party, I'll have to let go of having the music I want and get djs who will bring people because people goto events for the music more then for the promoter.

young minds are open by default, they like what they like because it sounds good, not because they know what it is... so if the younger crowd doesn't feel you, it's cause there's nothing to feel.

i never judged you as a DJ or your mixing so I don't see why you brought that up.

No, older music isn't electronic at ALL. 97% of older people like rock, classical, country, everything without much bass... I'm generalizing but you can't appeal to an older crowd in the rave scene, it's just not good business.

Fact is you don't have the DJ look. You're out of shape, short and ... not good looking. Who would hire someone who would scare away more people than attract them. It doesn't matter if you have the best skills around, you look like a giant munchkin from the Wizard Of Oz.

A dj is supposed to bring his or her following i know that but we aren't supposed to promote that is the promoteur's job no??? So in that case there is a couple of tickets sold and a couple guest listed but i could be wrong too ....If u r a huge name people will come to see u over and over again becuase they like what they hear.....Other than that i am not sure and that is all i know!!!

I have seen it over and over again when i was promoting as well... If for example a big dj didn't get to where he or she is if it wasn't for the person that hired him or her to play wherever right??? And as a promotor u know that this name will bring people to your party hence dj doesn't have to promote his or her name will bring the people flowing in!!!!
Update » Turtle wrote on Tue Sep 25, 2007 @ 1:09pm
because people have heard him or her and talk talk talk and hence people come right ??? I could be wrong on that one as well but i see it that way, i never saw deep dish promote their NAME brings poeple becuase they have a following they worked hard on!!!!

A DJ is a public figure, they don't speak out or get to use anything other than their look and their music/mixing. A lot of girl DJs suck but at least they look good. YOU look like this

You look like a giant fucking chipmunk, which is the best compliment you'll prolly get here. Whatever, I'm biased towards pretty people.
Update » AlienZeD wrote on Tue Sep 25, 2007 @ 1:23pm
The affect of looks is 10 times harsher towards females, which I assume you still consider yourself to be. Accept the reality that a good looking girl who can't mix for her life will get a gig over you no matter how amazing your music is. Why do we suck ?? most people gave you fucken good advise on what to expect as a Dj.. shit, i didn't want to step out of line in this thread but you seem to have an "i don't give a fuck" attitude so i feel its safe to be a dick.

If you have been around the scene for as long as you state, i am pretty sure you should already have a clue on how things work as a Dj in a scene. You must have friends who get paid as dj's. Why not ask them ? i mean, you pretty much shat on everyone's replies to your already ackward question.

Did you not take sec 4 economy class ?? you know, the whole supply and demande shing-ding ?? If there is no demande, why the heck would people pay ?? I've been around for a while myself and have never heard of you or what style you spin.. that mean's you probably wouldn't be much of an asset to a party. You said you promoted before ?? for what events ?? Molly's Babysitting agency ??
i mean, does anyone on this site know you ?? if not then you probably don't spin at raves.. and if you don't spin in raves, i understand why people aren't paying to hear your 170bpm music that you play.

my tip, get a day job !!

If you think a dj's job is only to play, then good luck finding gigs, especially in a city where every kid is a wanna be dj... Why would a promoter (who wants to make money from their event so they can pay you) want to book you if you don't bring anything back to the event besides your music. If you're not known, no one is going to pay to see you play that is for sure. I would not...
Update » Nuclear wrote on Tue Sep 25, 2007 @ 1:40pm
Maybe we should list how much a party cost to throw, and then you can tell me why anyone would want to bring a dj who does not bring in people.

Location: 0$ - 4000$ (Lets say 500$ to be cheap)
Djs: 7 Expecting 50$/Piece = 350$
Sound: 300$ (Decent Sound + Turntables + CDJ)
Lighting: 200$ (I like lights.)

Well this is a small list... We are at 1350$ now... There is much more to add if you have plane tickets and such.

So you want me to book you for 1/7th of the time, and you don't want to bring in anyone to the event... So

DJ 1 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 2 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 3 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 4 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 5 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 6 Brings in 0 people...
DJ 7 Brings in 0 people...

Nice, now I pay 1350$, don't get people... If every dj brought in 15 people at 10$ each... Well, now we are talking... Yes the promoter should bring in people. But the djs also since people go for the djs not the promoter...
