L'X do have a no drug politics since day one. It doesnt have anything to do with them beeing straight edge thought, its because they are a community center. They also have special permits that let them have a bar and aloows underage people in. They always get harass by the autority because they are punks so they have to be very careful with the rules. You would do the same!

I organized the first and second (also Last) rave they hosted back in '99, but it didnt take long for them to boycutt the rave scene because of his association with drugs. Even after some of the foundation members left, it took 2 years for them to let someone throw a party there. Back then it was my favorite venue for small partys and it still is today.

The party was great. the venue was hot (I have a soft spot for L'X), lots of people showed up and the vibe was great. I had a blast till I started playing. I had the craziest tracks and Played the wackiest set! So many technical problems happen while i was playing. First off the cd player, then the compression, the skipping, then i realize that only one turntable was working and it only got fixed 10min b4 the end of my set!!! I was struggling for an hour and never got to vibe off my records. Good thing i brought tons of dubs on cds or else we would have been fucked. I was so hype for this gig and left unsatified and ungry for more. Sorry guys, but shit happens.

Enough of my problems. I had a great time hangning out at the bar b4 i played and I really enjoy Galaksy early set. Thank for the party and keep them coming. You guys should consider using this venue more often.

[ MTLDNB.COM ] special feature !!!

An interview with Negative, dj and producer, co-owner of Hostile recordings ( NYC )

In this drum and bass game, being a producer - a musician and engineer -, is * not * enough. Sitting on one’s arse and waiting to get noticed, for contracts to drop like rain, might not be the best strategy… Your music isn't just going to find it's way to the listener's ears. Hence the need to take affirmative action. Among those who do take affirmative action - the warrior’s road - some individuals stand out like geniuses among " mere " artists. They are not " merely " talented. Enter negative, dj, producer, and owner, with his partner Contact, of Hostile recordings, a drum and bass label hailing from New-York city.

I had the opportunity to have a lengthy chat with him…

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Tell me a little bit about your musical background ? Which musical styles did you grow up listening to ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ My brother used to listen to a lot of techno from about 1994 so I kind of got into that. And right until about 1998 techno was pretty much all I listened to… But then I heard “ Wormhole ” ( Ed Rush and Optical, Virus recordings, 1998 ). And from then on got into dnb. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ I read in your biography ( bio section of [ Hostilerecordings.com ] ) that you were involved in the minimal techno scene in New-York. How were you involved exactly ? ”

NEGATIVE : “It was mostly my brother who was involved. He played at some parties and he is close friends with all the techno heads from round here. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ I would like to know… what exactly triggered the transition from minimal techno to drum and bass ? "

NEGATIVE : “ Well I still like minimal techno, Regis Surgeon, Adam Beyer, they are all great. But I was looking for something else I guess. And I went to my first drum and bass party at the end of 1998 I think. and really got into it. T’was dark dnb back then… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ What is, in your eyes, the connection between the two ? In your opinion, is drum and bass the next logical step, in terms of experimentation, possibilities ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ I wouldn’t say it’s the * next step *, I think every genre out there could evolve. But for me right now a mix of drum and bass and techno is the next step. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “Now tell me, how were Negative and Contact brought together ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We met in high school about 9 - 10 years ago. He was more into rock bands though, and I was always more into electronic music. But from the two of us, he is the musical one… he played in bands and all that. I am a visual person. I design stuff. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ How did your big break as a duo happen ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ The big break was that I got in touch with Duncan ( Dj Trace ). At first he approached me to help with the site design, but after some time we became friends and he helped me out a lot. He introduced me to all the right people. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “And that's why you and Contact, your partner, got to set foot in the mighty No U turn studio... ! ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah, we were both in London on holiday, and when we got together with Trace, he suggested that we go see the studio… We made our first ever track there. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Must've been quite an experience ! Let's talk about your label, Hostile recordings. What drove you and Contact to create the label ? What do you want to accomplish as label owners ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We were thinking about doing a label for a while now and I was approached by Simon ( Kryptic mindz ) for a site design and he said that he would do some tunes for us if we were interested in doing a label. That was more than enough motivation to do everything we could to bring the label idea to life. And now our first release should promo later this week. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Rob F ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yes, Rob F and Sureal - “ Deceit ” and on the flip Rob F - “ Breathe. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Breathe is an incredible piece of production... I was listening to it yesterday, as well as some of your dubs on your site... ”

NEGATIVE : “Yes Rob F is definitely one of the best producers today. It’s a shame that he’s taking a break from music now… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ He is ? damn, he's very talented but true, every producer needs a break once in a while... Now, tell me Negative, is there such a thing as a * Hostile sound * ? Listening to your solo tracks, your collaboration tracks with Contact, your dubs and your very first release, I am inclined to think so. I must say that your label stands firm on the moodier, darker side of things... ”

NEGATIVE : “ I wouldn’t say that we have just one certain sound in mind… its just all about a tune. If we both listen to something and we are into it we are going to sign it. And it doesn’t matter if its dark or whatever. As long as we both are into it. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ If that's not asking too much... I'd like to know what projects does Hostile recordings have in the pipeline ? For this year and beyond. ”

NEGATIVE : “ We have five singles ready right now. Second release is a Kryptic minds and Leon switch single ; third is the Sunchase “ Remember me ” backed with the ill skillz remix ; then we have Rob F – “ primal ” / Rob F & Kiko – “ beholder ” ; Fifth is going to be Rob F – “ resistance ” / “ beholder” Chris Su remix… Then there are plans for a Kiko single, Mindscape single and what should be a very hot single by the upbeats from New Zealand. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Quite a schedule !!! Things are looking good indeed…! Now let us focus a little more on the producer. Listening to - I should have said studying - some of your solo tracks, “ Assassin ” and “ Radio ”, as well as some of your work with Contact, “ Peanut butter ” and “ Raindancer ”, I hear layer upon layer of growling synths, modulated madness, perfectly tuned breaks, the eerie, cold, gray atmosphere of the big city brought to life with great skill... I am curious to know what software or hardware you use in the studio to create such sonic landscapes ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We are both are so very new to production… It all started just over a year ago when one day we were bored and asked Black sun empire to show us how to make some tunes. At first it seemed like a joke. But the more time we spent on it the more we got into it. All we use pretty much is fruity loops with all sorts of vst's. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ What is your standing on sampling ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We have quite a large techno records collection. Its my brothers actually. But there are probably 5 000 records from 1994 until present. And when we have some free time we look for some samples there. Otherwise its just sample cd’s. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Huge collection... a big nice sound bank right there ! We're nearing the end by the way…! ”

NEGATIVE : “ All good, no rush… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ The latest trend, what has been called Clownstep, has paved the way for a darker, heavier kind of jump up ( think Raiden and nightwalker ) while some revel in what is now called “ choppage ” … worth of mention also is the resurgence of raggajungle is the U.S., the rise of neurofunk in the UK, the liquid scene... All these labels for styles ! Where do you think drum and bass production is headed ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ It all depends on where the big names want to go… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Very true. ”

NEGATIVE : “ …and it looks like they want to go to where the money is. So what ever sells the most is going to control to where drum and bass is heading. But there is so many new labels now that you can find any sound you are looking for so it’s all good. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “What’s good in drum and bass today is that... every style is represented and these styles find their public… people know what they want and look for it... so you have variety and people who hunt down the lesser known artists, signed or not, who put out those tracks. And finally, Friday is a special day… ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah I sure hope so ! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ It will be your very first appearance in Montreal, in Canada even, as a dj... ”

NEGATIVE : “ Got tons of new tunes just for that ! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Oh nice !!! People over here are hyped up, Stabba has been promoting that night for some time now. ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah I can’t wait to meet all of you guys and I’m sure it should be lots of fun…! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Ok, one more final question ! Recalling what you've been through, what message would you like to send to the budding producers out there who want to make a break in the industry ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ I would say… just keep at it and send out as many cd’s put up files on the forums, pretty much do what ever it takes. If you think that you are good enough, I’m sure you will get noticed ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] “ I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. ”

NEGATIVE “ Sure thing. And I’ll see you guys on Friday ! ”

Theres is a difference between jungle and dnb but it is so hard to define that nobody really wants to get into it.

I would like to clear something. It is true that Jungle has been influence by raggae but theres is also a lot of jungle that has nothing to do with it. We are not talking about ragga-jugle here more the term Jungle itself. LTJ Bukem was considered jungle and most of his production as noting to do with raggae.

Check out this article if u feel like learning a bit about dnb. Its really interesting.

HISTORY

What is now a complex mixture of influences and genres began from humble roots in the UK. Though many debate the original drum & bass record, it was a combination of Lenny De Ice's "We are ie" and the late 1989 Perfecto release 'Baz De Conga' which pioneered the movement. The cut was an amalgamation of ideas and sounds, combining the sax drop from "Monkey Say, Monkey Do" with Steel City bleeps and a gospel vocal lift. What producer Steve Bicknell brought to the cut however was attitude - the whole mix powered by a tumbling sub roll, clattering breakbeats and an unrelenting synth strike.

Wherever people sought their influence, what followed was a snowballing of interest within this new form of UK sourced dance music. London at the time was a flurry of activity as labels, shops and clubs grew, this fire fuelled by an ever expanding pirate movement. Although the formation of labels such as Mendoza and Reinforced in the spring of 1990 gave direction, as late as the closing stages of 1991 the music was being played back to back with other forms of dance music.

This wasn't to last however, as the months rolled on the tempo spiralled and the music moved further and further from its house roots, each producer developing a style of their own.

The music made a distinct split during 1992. The early months of the year saw the formation of Moving Shadow, who released Earth Leakage Trip's "Psychotronic EP" to critical acclaim, a breath of fresh air in the more dancefloor orientated releases of Sub Base, Ibiza and Sound Of The Underground, who were continuing on the rhythm based club cuts.

Nebula II's "Flatliners", typified the darkside sound of 92/93, menacing and unforgiving the sounds borrowed from Belgium techno wreaked havoc to the groove. Leeroy Small's Leicester based Formation at the forefront of this digression through the Dark & Moody series, the tempo again the deciding factor as it creept from the lower regions of 140 beats per minute all the way through to 170.

Two cuts turned around a darkside which had become somewhat overburdened with a cartoon horror film dynamic. Goldie's "Terminator" and a little known white stamped only as "Tic Tac Toe", the white bringing a new maturity to the sound, while Goldie brought the technical mechanics. His work at Reinforced, in addition to his legendary personality and enthusiasm for the music led to him becoming one of the first producers to sign for a major.

From this point the music continued to splinter, 1993 saw LTJ Bukem establish Good Looking Records. Although most quote "Music" as pioneer of d&b's more musical form, it was his earlier work "Demon's Theme" which laid out the framework for what later became known as ambient or intelligent drum & bass. What Bukem in fact pioneered was in fact neither ambient nor intelligent, moreover a more structured approach to the d&b production, which concentrated less on the percussives and more around the atmospheres of the track.

This increasing maturity became more evident through the work of Rupert Parkes, although 1994 had brought a number of releases for both Good Looking and Ipswich's Certificate 18 label it was on the establishment of his own Photek label, that his tracks truly began to charter new territory - his records unlike anything before or since - sub-orbital atmospherics caught in a mesh of beats and occasional bass pulses.

1994 also saw the advent of the drum & bass longplayer by way of the groundbreaking "Parallel Universe" from 4 Hero, a double album of pure abstract, bringing vocals and the first echoes of jazz to drum & bass. Marc Mac & Dego's technical prowess leaving most breathless - seventy minutes bringing more new breaks than had been used in the music within the last six months in addition to a number of new techniques one of which, filtering, has made an indelible impression on the way beat programming has been carried out since. This discovery and integration of jazz became a turning point for the music, these elements cropping up within a number of releases, perhaps most notably in Blame & Justice's "Icons" project released on Justice's own "Modern Urban Jazz" label as well as showing its head through D*Notes seminal "Criminal Justice" longplayer.

Bristol made an indelible impression both through a multitude of labels, Full Cycle stable and Brian G's London based V imprint leading the charge - releasing a wealth of tracks, responsible for bringing through artists such as Size, Krust, Die, Flynn & Flora and Bill Riley - who integrated jazz, dub and smokey trip hop elements into a whole new form.

1995 brought Techstep took its name from a compilation LP release by East Londons Emotif Recordings, though is widely hailed as the product of DJ Trace who, in conjunction with Nico from the No U Turn label and Grooverider's Prototype brought a new sound to the long-forgetton darkside. Releases such as Blame's "Planet Neptune" and Source Direct's "Snake Style", though based more within the technological side of the movement, influenced techstep's direction and sound - which continues to launch careers two years on.

1997 sees a number of developments in d&b's continuing expansion. The second wave of artists longplayers for majors are starting to appear - albums from 4 Hero, DJ Krust, Adam F, Goldie, Source Direct and Dillinjah are expected before the year is out, while many already released (Photek's "Modus Operandi" and "New Forms" from Full Cycle collective Reprazent) are receiving critical acclaim. In addition to this the work of labels such as Good Looking and James Lavelle's Mo' Wax are working at bringing d&b artists to instrumental hip hop and vice versa, while tours of the US and Japan by most major dj's in addition to clubs and pirates surfacing in most of the UK's towns and cities spread the word.

DJ CURE:SSoulScape Records co-owner, Dj Cure has managed to explode into the extremely closed ranks of Canada’s top D&B Dj’s, Producers, and Promoters. Growing up in between Detroit and Toronto helped expose him to the sounds of hardcore, Jungle and techno at an early age. Cure has held his name down on the bill at every D&B/Jungle event in London, and is now looked at as London’s D&B authority. Now he can be found in the club at Knowledge Fridays in Toronto and on the Air waves at Battlestation Radio, as well a monthly guest slot on “heavy sessions” on Bass Drive Radio. Damn. This friday is gonna be insane. I just heard that Ammo will be coming in town from Chicago, so he will be opening the night with us. Then Genie from San Francisco will be doin' his trippy shit for half an hour. ( For the ones who dont know whop genie is, he has the capacity to get 5000 peoples packed in a room to shut up and listen to him while grooving and trancing...) Then local lobes & dislexic runnin the dance for an hour like they've been doing it for the last 2 weeks with us!!!

Wait, im not done. For all the femalist who wish thier would be more girls djjing, we got DJ ALOR from France. She started playing in '95 next to LE LUTIN. Since then shes been runnin' the major dances with artist like, Concord dawn, teebee... And then of course Me & Krinjah will kill the night away.

Did u say hype?

All this for 3$ if u get there b4 Midnight and 5$ after.
Maybe ull even get a deal if you're nice to the door girl.
NOT!

COME EARLY!!!
ill be there around 9 to set up the gear and Alor's final scratch.

I have footage of a bunch of dnb partys and I know the guys from Hypnotica who use to do video projection for most partys back in the days. They have lots of footage. I mean lots.
