[ MTLDNB.COM ] special feature !!!

An interview with Negative, dj and producer, co-owner of Hostile recordings ( NYC )

In this drum and bass game, being a producer - a musician and engineer -, is * not * enough. Sitting on one’s arse and waiting to get noticed, for contracts to drop like rain, might not be the best strategy… Your music isn't just going to find it's way to the listener's ears. Hence the need to take affirmative action. Among those who do take affirmative action - the warrior’s road - some individuals stand out like geniuses among " mere " artists. They are not " merely " talented. Enter negative, dj, producer, and owner, with his partner Contact, of Hostile recordings, a drum and bass label hailing from New-York city.

I had the opportunity to have a lengthy chat with him…

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Tell me a little bit about your musical background ? Which musical styles did you grow up listening to ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ My brother used to listen to a lot of techno from about 1994 so I kind of got into that. And right until about 1998 techno was pretty much all I listened to… But then I heard “ Wormhole ” ( Ed Rush and Optical, Virus recordings, 1998 ). And from then on got into dnb. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ I read in your biography ( bio section of [ Hostilerecordings.com ] ) that you were involved in the minimal techno scene in New-York. How were you involved exactly ? ”

NEGATIVE : “It was mostly my brother who was involved. He played at some parties and he is close friends with all the techno heads from round here. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ I would like to know… what exactly triggered the transition from minimal techno to drum and bass ? "

NEGATIVE : “ Well I still like minimal techno, Regis Surgeon, Adam Beyer, they are all great. But I was looking for something else I guess. And I went to my first drum and bass party at the end of 1998 I think. and really got into it. T’was dark dnb back then… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ What is, in your eyes, the connection between the two ? In your opinion, is drum and bass the next logical step, in terms of experimentation, possibilities ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ I wouldn’t say it’s the * next step *, I think every genre out there could evolve. But for me right now a mix of drum and bass and techno is the next step. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “Now tell me, how were Negative and Contact brought together ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We met in high school about 9 - 10 years ago. He was more into rock bands though, and I was always more into electronic music. But from the two of us, he is the musical one… he played in bands and all that. I am a visual person. I design stuff. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ How did your big break as a duo happen ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ The big break was that I got in touch with Duncan ( Dj Trace ). At first he approached me to help with the site design, but after some time we became friends and he helped me out a lot. He introduced me to all the right people. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “And that's why you and Contact, your partner, got to set foot in the mighty No U turn studio... ! ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah, we were both in London on holiday, and when we got together with Trace, he suggested that we go see the studio… We made our first ever track there. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Must've been quite an experience ! Let's talk about your label, Hostile recordings. What drove you and Contact to create the label ? What do you want to accomplish as label owners ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We were thinking about doing a label for a while now and I was approached by Simon ( Kryptic mindz ) for a site design and he said that he would do some tunes for us if we were interested in doing a label. That was more than enough motivation to do everything we could to bring the label idea to life. And now our first release should promo later this week. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Rob F ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yes, Rob F and Sureal - “ Deceit ” and on the flip Rob F - “ Breathe. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Breathe is an incredible piece of production... I was listening to it yesterday, as well as some of your dubs on your site... ”

NEGATIVE : “Yes Rob F is definitely one of the best producers today. It’s a shame that he’s taking a break from music now… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ He is ? damn, he's very talented but true, every producer needs a break once in a while... Now, tell me Negative, is there such a thing as a * Hostile sound * ? Listening to your solo tracks, your collaboration tracks with Contact, your dubs and your very first release, I am inclined to think so. I must say that your label stands firm on the moodier, darker side of things... ”

NEGATIVE : “ I wouldn’t say that we have just one certain sound in mind… its just all about a tune. If we both listen to something and we are into it we are going to sign it. And it doesn’t matter if its dark or whatever. As long as we both are into it. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ If that's not asking too much... I'd like to know what projects does Hostile recordings have in the pipeline ? For this year and beyond. ”

NEGATIVE : “ We have five singles ready right now. Second release is a Kryptic minds and Leon switch single ; third is the Sunchase “ Remember me ” backed with the ill skillz remix ; then we have Rob F – “ primal ” / Rob F & Kiko – “ beholder ” ; Fifth is going to be Rob F – “ resistance ” / “ beholder” Chris Su remix… Then there are plans for a Kiko single, Mindscape single and what should be a very hot single by the upbeats from New Zealand. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Quite a schedule !!! Things are looking good indeed…! Now let us focus a little more on the producer. Listening to - I should have said studying - some of your solo tracks, “ Assassin ” and “ Radio ”, as well as some of your work with Contact, “ Peanut butter ” and “ Raindancer ”, I hear layer upon layer of growling synths, modulated madness, perfectly tuned breaks, the eerie, cold, gray atmosphere of the big city brought to life with great skill... I am curious to know what software or hardware you use in the studio to create such sonic landscapes ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We are both are so very new to production… It all started just over a year ago when one day we were bored and asked Black sun empire to show us how to make some tunes. At first it seemed like a joke. But the more time we spent on it the more we got into it. All we use pretty much is fruity loops with all sorts of vst's. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ What is your standing on sampling ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ We have quite a large techno records collection. Its my brothers actually. But there are probably 5 000 records from 1994 until present. And when we have some free time we look for some samples there. Otherwise its just sample cd’s. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Huge collection... a big nice sound bank right there ! We're nearing the end by the way…! ”

NEGATIVE : “ All good, no rush… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ The latest trend, what has been called Clownstep, has paved the way for a darker, heavier kind of jump up ( think Raiden and nightwalker ) while some revel in what is now called “ choppage ” … worth of mention also is the resurgence of raggajungle is the U.S., the rise of neurofunk in the UK, the liquid scene... All these labels for styles ! Where do you think drum and bass production is headed ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ It all depends on where the big names want to go… ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Very true. ”

NEGATIVE : “ …and it looks like they want to go to where the money is. So what ever sells the most is going to control to where drum and bass is heading. But there is so many new labels now that you can find any sound you are looking for so it’s all good. ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “What’s good in drum and bass today is that... every style is represented and these styles find their public… people know what they want and look for it... so you have variety and people who hunt down the lesser known artists, signed or not, who put out those tracks. And finally, Friday is a special day… ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah I sure hope so ! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ It will be your very first appearance in Montreal, in Canada even, as a dj... ”

NEGATIVE : “ Got tons of new tunes just for that ! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Oh nice !!! People over here are hyped up, Stabba has been promoting that night for some time now. ”

NEGATIVE : “ Yeah I can’t wait to meet all of you guys and I’m sure it should be lots of fun…! ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] : “ Ok, one more final question ! Recalling what you've been through, what message would you like to send to the budding producers out there who want to make a break in the industry ? ”

NEGATIVE : “ I would say… just keep at it and send out as many cd’s put up files on the forums, pretty much do what ever it takes. If you think that you are good enough, I’m sure you will get noticed ”

[ MTLDNB.COM ] “ I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. ”

NEGATIVE “ Sure thing. And I’ll see you guys on Friday ! ”

Its like a formula @ this venue also ...by the end the dj kills the dancers for once and for all and then the party ends up ...
