Let's consider the sound guy : if you are a promoter and you get a call from him saying he won't show up, you'll have to find somebody else to fill in for him in extremis. If you can't find anyone else, you're stuck second guessing how to setup the sound system which usually results in piss poor sound and unhappy punters.

Now, apply this scenario to a DJ : if you are a promoter and you get a call from him saying that as much as he wants to, he can't show up because you've changed your lineup so many goddamn times, it ends up being so late the next morning that he has to get in to work ( it happened to me once ), you don't give a shit really because, once you've proceeded to tell him to " fuck off you piece of shit, don't show up here tonight or I'll have security make you eat your vinyl case ", you dial up about 5 different other DJs who'll gladly fill in for him in extremis ( can't blame 'em, a DJ is always up for dropping plates ). If you can't find anyone else...well, there is always someone else so what's the worry ?

I think the sheer number of DJs available gives certain promoters the right to treat them like dirt because, hey, " if you don't want to, 17 others will ".

If DJs were part of a union or if they refused to play in certain cases ( like replacing a DJ that got shown the door for no good reason ), promoters would behave a whole lot different towards them, I think.

^ for sure...

It's just sad that we have to have this conversation in the first place. You hire a DJ, pay him. No matter how much or how little, pay him. All we ask is that we don't get stuck with the bill, after working our asses off for the promoter and the crowd; and some respect would be appreciated. That's it.

no you don't.. you can open a business and declaire losses without any revenu.. who said you need to earn a minimum ??

on a side note, you don't need to declaire taxes if you don't make over 10,000$ in revenu's !! so basically, under that, the gouvernement doesn't really care !!

Dude I get called big headed just for mentioning what I've done as dj,

Imagine what people would think if I actually demanded to get paid for it ;) lol,

Seriously though, this is an empty discussion,

You book someone you pay them, you can't pay them don't book them,

If the promoter dosen't pay you, he's basically stealing from you and breaking every business law in the book. You can either sue him or like Craig pointed out, keep some of the equipment as collateral.
Another method is to harrass them like you're a collection agency. I'm also not one to advocate violence but if you feel the need to shake the guy up, by all means do it.

I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH, ANYTHING GOES IF THE PROMOTER DOSEN'T PAY YOU.

DO NOT LET THEM STEAL FROM YOU

If you are sick of not being paid, demand your money up front and don't spin until you have your cash. That advice would have saved me tons of trouble.

I agree but the thing is, unless you are of Tiesto status, the promoter is most likely to tell you to fuck off and call another DJ to replace you instead. :(

If you agree on terms with a promoter, and he doesn't honor those terms, he's not going to last in the scene. It's all good to work for free, if you choose to, and sometimes the scenario does warrant giving up a freebie; but do you honestly expect anyone to work for the same promoter that screwed him last time? "NO." is the answer and there are only so many quality DJs to fuck over. A SMART promoter will pay his DJs what he told them he'd pay them before or during their set. A DJ having to chase his cash is unacceptable.
Point finale.
Just a note, any GOOD DJ is not replaceable.

...like i said before... if i book a dj and build a line-up, evrey dj on the line-up is strategically chosen to fit together... kinda like macro mixing... and like mixing, if a plate goes missing when i wanna play it next, it can completely distablize me
I'm feeling dope right now..
