Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you

He loves you, and He needs money!

Suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? "Well, it's God's will." "Thy Will Be Done." Fine, but if it's God's will, and He's going to do what He wants to anyway, why the fuck bother praying in the first place?

...all the prayers are being awnsered at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don't. 50-50. Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe, the wishing well and the rabbit's foot, same as the Mojo Man, same as the Voodoo Lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles, it's all the same: 50-50. So just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself.

...And for those of you who look to The Bible for moral lessons and literary qualities, I might suggest a couple of other stories for you. You might want to look at the Three Little Pigs, that's a good one.

If catholic priests are representatives of God and the majority of them, thousands of them are fucking little boys then that would make God what?

You need something to belive in, where do you think our morals and standards of life came from, without these morals this world would be a living hell.

Me born catholic, and now, well I don't know, I guess I'm still catholic, but I don't take the Bible litteraly, it's all symbols in there, and people must try to make these symbols apply in our modern world.

I don't think science proves religion wrong or vice-versa, I think the two complete each other. Of course if you read the Bible litterally it doesn't match, I mean "God created Adam and Eve" vs. the evolutionnist theory...
You must not forget that the Bible was written 2000 years ago, and that the ones who wrote it didn't have the knowledge we had now. However, with our high-tech science, we can still rely on the Bible because it's not about science, it's about love and relationships between people, and that still exists today.

I mean, traditionnally we weren't supposed to make love before marriage... Nowadays trying to apply chastity doesn't really work, it's not our customs anymore. But that doesn't mean we'll all go to hell. (is there a hell? I don't know)
I think God goes beyond that. In fact, I think he goes beyond everything :b

True, but those that think religin is bogus have their right to think that way, but Religion is something that you should take as how you should live ur life. Yes, granted that we shouldn't take it literaly, but don't knock it.

if the bible is a book that sets the standards on morals, i'd own slaves, tell women to get back in the kitchen, and would hate fags.

I've met plenty of witches and have let them live even though Ex.22:18 tells me I should kill them.
Same with Gays Lev.20:13, people who believe differently than me Dt.13:6-10 and disobediant children Dt.21:18-21

Is it figurative language?

People who say gays aren't allowed cause the bible says so are stupid. I dare you to find the line that says i can't be gay.

well read the story of Sodom and Gamorrah and you will see for yourself. The word "homosexual" or "gay" is not used. But if you read the context of it all its pretty obvious.

God destroyed Sodom and Gamorrah because of un-natural sexual acts that were a regular practice in those cities.

Where do you thing the word "SODOMIZE" ( the act of engaging in anal sex, which is the way homosexuals usually have intercourse ) comes from ? It comes from the name Sodom, one of the two cities from that story.

It's all in the book of Genesis.

----------------------------------------

Now about religion causing wars:

-for one its not religion that causes wars. its the people who do crazy acts using His name.
Like Bush is doing right now, he does so in the name of freedom, democracy and God.

-the Muslim extremists ( NOTE the word: EXTREMISTS ) use God's ( Allah ) name as an excuse to wage war on "infidels" ie non-Muslims

Many people have used God as an excuse to wage war and commit horrible acts.

Don't blame religion itself, like one person said further up, religion itself is a perfect ideology much like Marx's idea of Communism is.
But where it all got screwed is when people who ran the show, like Cardinals and Popes in the case of religion and Stalin in the case of Communism.

These people found themselves in places of power and could not resist the temptation.
Its the human factor, the flesh, that is responsible for sin, not the religion itself.

----------------------------------------

The Bible itself is not be taken literally word for word. Most of it written in parables and misinterpretation can occur. The problem arose when someone decided to translate the text from the original Hebrew ( Old Testament ) and the original Greek ( New Testament ). Because words in those languages have multiple meanings, contradictions began to occur as translators began to offer it other languages.

But the Koran for on the other since its original writting has remained in Arabic.
People who dont speak Arabic learned the language so that they can read the Koran in the language it was meant to read in.

Now if the same thing was done with the Bible, things would be much different today, that I am 100% sure of.

Anyway, I just wanted to put in my opinion.
Everyone is entitled to their own and I wanna make it clear that
in no way was I trying to put anyone down, you have your view on something ? Perfect just dont try to force your views down my throat.

Live and let live. Let the One who is allowed to do the judging. Its not my business.

Thanks for hearing me out.

This is the thing...

In the times of the Old Testament, such things written in Leviticus and the other 4 books written by Moses, were considered the Law alogn with the 10 commandments.

Now, when Jesus came he offered a new Covenant, a new Testament. He didn't say that the old Testament was wrong or anything like that,(the 10 commandments are still to be followed ) he simply meant that His was simpler but at the same time He was the fulfillment of the Old Testament.

In the times of Moses, when a Jew was guilty of a sin, he or she would have to go the Altar and sacrifice a lamb in order to be forgiven for their sins ( dont ask me why they did that cause i dont know but those were the rules ).

Now when Jesus came, being the Son of God, he did so with the intention of dying for our sins.
What this means is that He took the place of the typical sacrificial lamb for atonement and forgiveness of sin. Which is why He is also known as the Lamb of God.

After He died on the Cross for us, no one ever needed to make another burnt offering to God anymore because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice.
His death, gave us the opportunity to receive forgivess from sin. Through Him, we are set free.

The 5 books of Moses**, in the Old Testament are more for historical record than anything else. As for the rest of the OT, it is all about Prophecy of Jesus' coming and his death for us.

The New Testament teaches Love toward your fellow man. It takes more of a Live and let live approach. Hate the sin, love the sinner.

**this is from an Orthodox Christian standpoint. No offense to anyone who's Jewish.

I've been reading most of the posts and they all seem to stand. I'm somewhat glad that most of the people here can reason without closing themselves in a state of mind by creating artificial walls protecting them.

Now back on the subject: I'm agnostic and highly prefer science than the Bible. Why? Well things just don't stand by themselves in the book. I also think religion is a way to standardize a population's evolution, ideas and general way of life among other things.

How about these classics:

"Work hard... you will get a better place in heaven."
"God works in mysterious ways..."

As I leave this thread, I'd like for all of you to notice how ironic is the fact that we only seem to seek God's assistance when we are in need. La religion c'est l'opium du peuple... hell ya.

Good night.
