logic, pro tools or GO THE FUCK HOME.
logic is a great way to go because it comes with everything you need right outta the box and a legal student copy with all the manuals/ instuments/ sample banks only costs about $250.
the firebox is trash too...
if you get a mac get the apogee duet for a little more... it's made for mac and sounds better than anything else thats under $1800.
but for real...
if thats the way you wanna go...
focus on getting the comp and the software first and you'll be up and running.
logic will run fine without a crazy sound card and any intel based mac will do the job, you don't really have to spend more for a power book or a tower. a macbook, imac or mini mac are all fine.
then put your focus on monitors and a midi controller and you'll be good to go!
pro tools is also a good way to go... but it's pretty bare bones out of the box which is why i feel logic gives you the most bang for you buck in terms of what it comes with, min system requirements and upgrade ability.
my 2 cents.
and please take in mind i dicked around with p.c.'s for years before coming to these conclusions.

i'm on the band wagon for snow leopard personally...
it's romoured to save 6 gigs of space from leopard (currently 9 gigs)compared to windows 7's 16 gigs.
and the upgrade is only gunna cost $29 whereas windows 7 pro is $200 for just the upgrade and $119 to upgrade the home edition...
and honestly cutterhead...
nobody is gunna use any of those OS's until they get some software support.
which isn't happening too fast...
and as a designer i have no intention to switch to gimp and inkscape any time soon...
on that note... i hope windows 7 can handle adobe suites better than vista and xp.
that microsoft bull shit wont even let me create high res jpg's in illustrator bigger than 8.5x14" on a quad core intel with 4 gigs of ram without giving me out of memory errors...
While my core duo mac with 1 gig does 3x6' with ease.

i had problems with videotron back in the day of those old samsung modems...
got a 300$ bandwith charge and canceled on the spot.
i heard they cleaned up there act a lot though... so i'm considering taking the hit.
but... $50 a month + tax for 30 gigs up and down is fuckin' ridiculous.

they changed my billing after frauding my bank account for $700 (long story) and didn't bill me for 4 months!!

i spoke with a fido rep the other day and apperently every customer service agent there gets an average of 30 calls a day from bell costumers who want to switch as well.

promotion costs money... mastering costs money... operating a store costs money... designing costs money... equipment cost money... copyright costs money... taxes cost money... bandwidth costs money... long distance phone calls cost money... samples cost money... studio time costs money... engineers cost money... even time costs money!!!
The list goes on and on... and even though with todays technology, anybody can "apparently" do most of that stuff themselves nowadays... if it wasn't for "the industry" thats supposedly the big bad guy here, getting their cut...
ALL those costs would be incurred by the artists directly and making music as we know it would become something strictly for the rich and elite.
and maybe i'm the only one who's noticed this already...
but the quality of music thats available in this HUGE AND MONEYLESS market... is... i hate to say it...

It all comes down to MONEY and the fact that you gotta give some to get some.

think about this a little bit before you write something stupid about how you know this guy... dj faggotchin or what ever who works a day job but is really talented at making quality tunes and does it just for the love... because sorry to say... but with out a lil payola in his pockets he's probably going to fade away and end up making a modest career working as an order clerk or a cruise ship musician, will probably never live up to his full potential as an artist and will definately never be a rockstar to the eyes of much more than his family, friends and couple of uber geeky music nerds who chances are... probably downloaded his album anyway.

as long as they are loud enough to be heard over a club system all that really matters is that they are loud and are durable.
buy something with metal in the head band that can fold and don't have cheaply made pivot points.
pioneers are a nice luxury...
but the plastic cracks really easy.
same with alot of the sony models.
haven't tried the allen and heaths yet but they look really nice.
honestly though...
if your on cheapo budget i'd go for the ugly ass stantons cuz they are loud as fuck, have a replacable cord and a mono switch (which really comes in handy on shady systems).
if you wanna spend a little more go for technics they are really loud and don't break.
