if you really want your mac OS, go for Hackintosh...
That's what we use at my work. But yeah you need to be a bit computer savvy.. Otherwise Win7 is a decent OS imho. |

I just checked piece by piece on [ www.newegg.ca ] for fun, and for just the components (no mobo, case, dvd, etc) with shipping, still came up to about 1200$ (except the ram was 12gb, instead of 4gb)
picking a similar combo deal would be a couple hundred $'s cheaper tho.

money doesn't matter... it's piece of mind too...
btw I will be adding more ram, but 4GB is usually more than enough. On the rare occasions I am running photoshop, VMware, watching videos and playing Starcraft, then I start using the swap space but I'll be upping it to 8GB and I really don't see myself ever not having 5GB RAM free/idle. I'm very tech savvy, Linux doesn't have the apps I need (Mac os X is Unix anyway). Windows 7 isn't bad, but I have that installed too anyway (bootcamp) and hackintosh, well that's just scary. besides, I'm highly knowledgeable about hardware in theory, but buying all that shit individually and putting it together, no thank you. Also, there are some solid benefits to getting an iMac that no other similar PC can do right now, like the built in 27" screen, thunderbolt and of course, the beauty. Oh yeah, and Mac OS X Lion is coming out soon... Resume and Auto-Save will make it bomb fo shizzle...

Imacs tend to overheat and the logic board will blow. All-in-ones are pretty wack I've come to realize. The optical drive stopped working after 6 months also from overheating. |

@Host: all computers eventually break down, at which point you replace them, because they are old and outdated anyway... that's what sweet about Applecare... it's 3 years... so by then you've been covered and it's time to upgrade anyway...

In a non-drunken way:
Ever since Apple went with the x86 processors, the ONLY thing that you're paying for that's different is the operating system. That $2000+ iMac is literally a $900 computer with a $300 monitor glued on, only you can't upgrade any internals yourself, it's prone to overheating, and if one component bites it, the whole motherboard (or computer) needs to be replaced, instead of the ONE component that's giving you trouble. The exact same PC specs will cost you roughly $1350-$1450, so let's high-ball and round up to $1500 - you're then paying over $500 for an OPERATING SYSTEM that's basically Apple taking a FREE operating system and giving it a custom skin. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, by contrast, is $350, so even if that iMac is exactly $2000, you'd be saving $150 at LEAST by getting the same PC, buying the OS and a 27" monitor.. And if you go the route of a pre-built PC (Dell/Acer/HP/etc) with the same specs, you'll be paying about $1200 with the OS bundled, then you can shell out for a 27" monitor and have $500 left over to, hey, fuck it, buy a 2nd 27" monitor, or for $2100 you can get the same PC with THREE 27" monitors!

199$ for W7 Ultimate... I have a volume license copy of it which works great and upgrades without you ever having to enter in a serial number on a usb key somewhere. Installing from USB takes like 10 minutes.
