I have a volume license copy of it which works great and upgrades without you ever having to enter in a serial number on a usb key somewhere. Installing from USB takes like 10 minutes.

Oh really now? Do you share for a price?

If Alien wants a Mac 'cause he NEEDS certain programs only available for Mac, then let him spend the extra cash and deal with the future Mac headaches ...

So, on the other hand, you can buy a really good Laptop w/ Windows (yeah, I hate Win too, but meh) and just don't go on the 'net with it, if you're buying a machine for audio/visual, and can use Win programs.

I use a shitty pc with Ubuntu (linux) for the 'net, and a decent virgin laptop for music. Perfect.

It's like comparing oranges and tangerines here ... Mac, PC, whatever, its a fucking computer, so just get what suits your needs at the best price you can find with the energy you're willing to spend on the research, and enjoy whatever piece of enslaving technology you decide to get xD -- just make sure you buy what you need, NOT what offers you the most amount of useless fancy options.

The idea is to know what you want the computer for, and take it from there ...
I'm feeling you up right now..

What surprises me so much is that people are so willing to pay extra cash for better quality products, but when it comes to Apple, people either swear by them or swear at them.
I mean, is a 100,000$ car worth 90,000$ more than a 10,000$ car. They both get you around no? Well, why aren't computers the same to a certain extent. In general, you're not just paying for the specs, you're paying for the brand, the quality, the support, the notoriety and lots more. Most people don't understand that components aren't all created equal even if they share the same general specifications. Take speakers for example, M-Audio and Adam both make reference monitor similarly sized and powered, but one is 5 times the price, and fuck, it's worth it.

Fanboi's are pretty wack, and I must admit there's a part of me that is one, what with my iPhone 4, my iPad 2 and soon my 27" fully loaded iMac, but what's just as wack are people who feel the need to utterly denigrate anyone and everyone who prefers a certain product and experience over another. You're not necessarily jealous, or a horrible writer syntactically (not aiming at anyone in particular) but why all the hate?
If you want to buy a 200$ canadian tire bike, that's ok, let me buy my 1300$ shimano without telling me what it's worth TO YOU.

I don't care what it costs, hell, I make a killing working on my computer, so I want one that will help me do my job and get the fuck out of the way otherwise. I think it's OK to invest a decent amount into something that at the end of the day is my bread and butter.

Apparently, rubbing his shitload of cash and his iCrap in everyone's face?

I kid, I kid. Hell, I don't know what AlienZed does for a living, but if it requires a good computer (and yeees, that 27in Mac IS a good computer, albeit DEFINITELY overpriced), then yeah, go for it. Don't ask for our opinion.

Unless all you wanted was to fuel some drama? In which case, mission accomplished

I didn't post the fact that it was an iMac initially because I wanted to see if the specs themselves were top notch... the real debate in my mind was actually more if the SSD was worth it for a desktop system... I should expect faster boot, faster app loads, etc...

a second opinion, especially when mine is so biased, is always useful

See, the car analogy works if you're comparing, say, a Honda Civic to a Ferrari - sure they both get you around, one just has more eye candy than the other, and if you really want to go all-out insane, the Ferrari has the hardware that can give you that extra performance.

That's not the case with Apple vs. PC. It's literally the EXACT same hardware components. It's like comparing a Honda Civic, with a Honda Civic that you've put a Ferrari body over. Sure, it LOOKS awesome and fancy from the outside, but under the hood it's EXACTLY the same as the other. Ok, maybe the seats are different, or the guages are digital instead of analog, but when it comes down to it, Apple computers AREN'T any different than a Windows PC with the same specs.

In fact, especially coming with the iMacs, you're getting BETTER hardware if you get a PC than an iMac, because the iMacs are essentially laptops put into a fancy case with a built-in screen. You're not paying more for quality of components, you're paying more for minaturization, in the same way that a $1000 laptop works out to a $450 desktop. You're not actually getting desktop-level quality hardware with an iMac, but an on-board solution that can't be changed, fixed or upgraded in the slightest way.

Miniaturizing computer hardware tends to lead to more problems than it fixes:
- small, restrictive cases that don't allow for proper airflow. the slightest bit of dust or accidental covering of an air port and your system overheats and gets fucked.
- everything on board, which means if one component dies, there's a good chance it'll take EVERYTHING along with it. with a separate graphic card, if it fries, chances are your motherboard will still be good since they're still hooked up separately, but with an all-in-one, everything is linked - if your graphic card overheats and shorts, it stands a much higher chance of frying everything on the board and killing your hard drive.
- get a crack on your screen? NEW COMPUTER! Or spend a few weeks waiting for it to get repaired... whereas with something not all-on-one, you can just go get a new screen, or hook up an old screen while your old one gets sent out for repairs.. You have no option to keep your computer working if one component fails; it's all-or-nothing.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Okay so I -was- going to also quote AlienZed here and explain all that, but Screwhead did it for me haha.

AlienZed, in my experiences as a technician over the years. The best cost-effective thing you can do is build a custom computer, put in Windows 7 64-bit and run "Hackintosh" in a VM. Getting the warranties on all the parts you buy also come up to less than you would pay for an Apple-built PC for the same specs. In most cases, the hardware you choose to put in the custom will be better than the hardware put into the Mac line.

To me, cost-effective computer building is all about the customs'cause once you've got the hardware anything is possible software-wise.
I'm feeling le tired right now..

First off, the hardware isn't 'exactly' the same at all. Apple takes a year to optimize components in space and performance in a handful of machines. And to me, those seats, digital gauges, etc... make all the difference. When I'm using my computer, I'm a user, so to me if everything just works, I'm happy.

OK, you can't say that it's the EXACT same hardware AND then the PC hardware is BETTER. what's the deal..

Regardless, if just one single component dies, the whole computer is useless anyway. Given that type of problem, you'll be fixing it or bringing it in either way, and with the 3 year warranty, you're 100% covered for problems like that. No need to buy any new anything.

that happened to me actually. Adonis, Zoe's cat, knocked over a mssive mirror that was behind my computer... whole thing fell, cracked the screen, shattering it.
Cost 900$ for the screen and 300$ for the repair.

you're right. BUT, I'm not trying to be cost effective, money is of no concern :) What I want is to buy a computer, prebuilt, all in one, optimized and hawt, even if the temperature is also hot.. these things do get hot, I can vouch for that...
