Bottom line is, if DJs are being paid to mix tracks at a party, they should be damn well be mixing tracks otherwise I call "breach of contract" and they shouldn't get paid, PERIOD.

Well fuck, if I come in to work, just put my headset on and pretend to be taking calls, you honestly think I oughta get paid for that ?

Not only that but if I'm throwing a party and I wanted some goddamn poser to PRETEND TO BE MIXING to an already mixed CD, I'd save myself the trouble (and some cash) and just have the fucking coat check girl do it instead. She's way sexier and she won't give gave some fake-ass DJ drama of having "a decent working monitor on the right angled at precisely 30 degrees downwards because it works out better for me this way" (that's kinda besides the point if you're just gonna pretend, right?)

hehehe ;)

my sets are not pre-fabricated, but everything i do during the night IS. i write out a script of all the things i`ll say to people, at what time i`ll smoke a J, what time i`ll leave.. it`s so much easier than figuring things out as you go along. so, when i walk up to the cute girl i was expecting to see at the party, i won`t look like a nervous twit. it`s all planned out.

but sometimes, something unexpected happens, and i look kinda weird, like if the promoter walks up to me and says: "dude, there`s a problem with the mixer!" and i respond "yes, i would like a beer"...

in fact, if i look right here in my agenda, it says: July 27th, 12:30 pm - make an absurd comment and post it on [ rave.ca ]

:p

Truth:

I have on occasion mixed without headphones, usually because of a missing adaptor or because the monitor was right in my face. In some cases it's because I'm running into a sytem that doesn't have a jack at all, which is of course a bit gay, or because the mixer is too far away, which is just lousy setup work.

I have also from time to time not had any MIDI shit working at all and faked it while trying desperately to do the tweaks with a mouse (total MIDI and keyboard failure), but I still used the mixer strips like crazy.

I have however always mixed on the fly. It's more fun and it's guaranteed to lead to things that surprise even you. The adrenaline rush this causes is inevitably addictive and the crowd will go wild. They see you freaking out and are automatically engaged. And in breakcore this is the only way you can get away with fucked up tracks. You have to go with impulses. And I don't mean the kind that compel you to do lines off the mixing table instead of attending to the mix.

But this was all with a live PA rig set up. Sometimes there are either too many machines so you can't figure out what is still safe to tweak, sometimes it's because you have only a laptop and the software being used makes beatmatching too easy, but there's always something you can do. For vinyl, I can't figure out how you can divide attention and still mix well. You need to use your time wisely.

However if I ever got offered a good sum of cash for a gig I wouldn't cut corners. After all you want to make a name for yourself with integrity. Or at least I would think so.
I'm feeling mighty frisky right now..

another interesting point is people mixing with ableton live... a lot of people could criticize the fact that theres no beatmatching involved whatsoever! (yeah i know its possible to set it to actually beatmatch, but most ppl dont).

there is still track selection and since you dont have to care about beatmatching you should compensate with a lot of creative tweak and fx! Girl Talk(Aka Greg Gillis) is a good example of what you can do instead of being a beatmatching nazi.
I'm feeling analyzing charts right now..

I played this rave a couple of years back and there was this guy on before me, can't remember his name, but anyhow, he's like tweeking knobs and pretending to do stuff...so after like 10 minutes I notice he hasn't changed a cd, in fact he's hasn't even touched the other player and another track is coming on right on the beat...I'm like wtf?

So then I go to go on and I look at the cd player and it says 22 minutes remaining on the track lol...So I mix in my track and pull out the other cd and it was a fucking store bought trance mix from Van Dyk or some other dude!

The guy didn't even have a problem with it, he was like "oh yeah you should have let it play, the next track is really good" !!! I couldn't believe it O_o

i agree with this, i think we need to bring back 'the cut', a lot people say shit like '"cutting is for people who can't mix" but i don't believe that, i think it can really be done well.

Tiesto isnt a dj (anymore), he's a business, and a quite lucrative one at that. Who cares if he buys the music that he signs, who cares if he plays mixtapes? Not his banker, thats for sure.

Believe it or not, most peoples couldn't care less about the technical side of dj'ing and are clueless as to what beat matching really is. Most party goers are there to dance and meet with peoples, and really appreciate hearing tracks that they know or have heard before. Hence all the cheesy pop song remixes.

For the record, who here has actually seen Tiesto "mix" live?

My 2 cents I am very passionate about mixing, i haven't done alot of it in the past year but to me it is an art, all dj's that use the laptop and say they r a dj ya bullshit, come hit the decks with me with some records or cd's then tell me what kind of dj u really are. It takes skill, talent and an good ear, i hate it when someone says they r dj and brings out their laptop to mix, anyone can do that!!!!

depends, from now on i mix with my laptop at home, with tracktor and a usb controller, versatility and wider range of track selection, and alot more options.

the problem isnt the "laptop" its the dj itself.

Well i know u know how to mix, it is the new age dj's i am talking about, that as soon as they pull out their laptop's and say i am a dj check this out and i see is the guy or girl pressing SYNC every time they start to off pitch on a mix, they don't rely on their ear! Cause they don't have to cause it is already done for them by pressing a button it pisses me off that these little fuckers get hired and here i am struggling to get a gig with all my experience and talent and hard work....

Anyway i guess everything happens for a reason and i am patient have been for a long time i am happy doing what i am doing and no one can take it away from me! I stay real.....

i did , and it was flawless. and he wasnt even sweating... i was next to the dj booth but the booth is always far enough to miss the techniques from afar.

i wasnt impress. song bildups arent my thing when it not done by the mix itself.

good guy thou , always happy and quite social i feel thats necessary for good crowd vibe , and respect the person for that. its the dj i dont quite get.

but lets look at MISSTRESS BARBARA , always smiling, always 3 turntables 3 cdjs.

now thats a show

ya but the people love him and he gets paid ALOT but if they really knew what went on behind the decks then they would change their minds!

I have always said that the peeps on the dance floor HAVE NO IDEA WHAT GOES ON IN THE DJ BOOTH. All they know is that they r dancing to music! They don't know the concept of being a dj is, they do know that the dj mixes music but what they don't know how! That is why i hear alot of peeps say oh that's easy ya well if u think it is so easy u do it.

That actually happened to me at a party i handed the headphones to someone who was bitching about the music cause my needle broke (was skipping alot). I was doing my best to keep it going until my bf got me another one from my bag in the other room! I handed him my headphones while i went for some water and all he did was stare at the equipment. Not so easy huh sweety shut up and dance next time ok...He agreed....
