good for u Betty Haze!! I heard of the Williamsburg shelter. I dont know much about them but I sure hope they have the funds to take care of the animals properly. As most "anti-euthanizing" shelters dont. There is too much to take care of and they end up starving to death. They think they are doing the animals a favor but they really arent.

read the following email and please pass it around, thanks:

797 : Chatte d’environ 1 an, éternue
903 : Chatte possiblement gestante, écoulement des yeux
677 : Chatte d’environ 4 ou 5 ans, éternue

NOTE AU SUJET DES CHATS MALADES :

868 : Chatte grise + 5 chatons d’environ 5 semaines
825 : Chatte gestante, grise
675 : Chatte + 4 chatons d’un mois
644 : Chatte probablement gestante
713 : 1 chaton, 3 mois, infection à l’œil déjà sous traitement

NOTE :

Hi everybody!

As it was last week, the Foster program is still too busy this week. All our cages are used and we won’t be able to take new animals to place in foster care until the animals in those cages leave. This situation, if it happens, would accordingly increase our euthanasia rate, which we absolutely want to avoid! That is why we need your immediate help. Here is, again, a list of all the animals we have to place.

Sick Cats

783 : sick male kitten, needs to see the vet
592 : 3 months old female kitten, sneezes and eyes secretions
70384 : 1 year and a half female cat, sneezes and is congested
797 : 1 year old female cat, sneezes
903 : Possibly pregnant cat, eyes secretions
677 : 4 or 5 years old female cat, sneezes

NOTE ABOUT SICK CATS :
We want to remind you that we now have an overpopulation of cats at the SPCA. Thus, sick cats have less chances to be saved because they are not prioritized. We ask for your help about that! We have a vet for the foster families that you can see for only 5$ (including the consultation + treatments if needed), don’t forget it!!! Please help us, save a life!

Cats for temporary shelter

764 : Tabby cat and her 2 kittens (black, tabby), 1 month old
1148 : Pregnant black cat (she will give birth really soon)
514 : Pregnant calico cat, light vision problem
612 : Snowball, 3 years old cat, and her 3 kittens of 3 weeks
868 : Grey cat + 5 kittens of about 5 weeks
825 : Pregnant cat, grey
675 : Cat + 4 kittens of about 5 weeks
644 : Possibly pregnant cat
713 : 1 kitten, 3 months, eye infection under treatment

NOTE :
We have already many kittens and cats that will just need to see the vet on Monday morning to be placed in a foster family. If the upmentionned cats don’t leave soon, we won’t have place for those cats that come up Monday. Help us!!

Dogs for temporary shelter

- We have a young husky with a broken leg. The foster family will have to invest to heal him but could beneficiate from an important rebate on the adoption fees if they want to adopt him.
- We have many dogs who have the kennel cough. They need to be placed in foster homes to heal in a calm environment. All the dogs we have to place right now are big dogs.

Contact us as soon as possible at 514-735-2711 extension 237.

here is an email from my boss at the spca regarding some info on permanent+temporary foster families:

Ok, now, about permanent fosters: permanent foster is an adoption
without
ANY fees!
Animals are chosen for permanent foster because they do not meet the
different adoption criterea
of the general public because, for example, they are too old, have
serious
behavioural issues or have
an illness.
If a family is willing to take in such an animal because they want to
save
a life, we do not charge them anything
for the adoption. The animals still get their 1st shot and are
dewormed
when they arrive at the SPCA but sterilization,
microchipping and medication are not provided. If an animal is
already
fixed then permanent fostering is a great option! Personnally, if I
could
take a permanent foster and it wasn´t fixed, I would choose to pay for
it
(i.e. adopt it-it is possible
to do that, that´s what the guy who adopted Noah did!) simply
because it
would be cheaper.

A few more notes about permanent fosters:
- Permanent fosters are kept in the adoption kennel. There are 2 at
the
moment: Mooky and the 8 year-old
Hound. You can recognize permanent fosters by the lavender sign that
is on
their cage. It reads something like:
"special case. see foster program for more info).
- Some animals that are up for adoption can become available for
permanent
foster at one point.
The most common case is when an animal has been at the shelter for a
long
time. The goal is to find a home
for them and to save a life, not to "make money" so we wave the
adoption
fee.
- If you are interested in a dog but are willing to let it go if
someone
wants it and want to take it if no one else
does, you can put a note on its file "do not destroy, willing to take
as
permanent foster, your name and 2 phone
numbers". If the animal becomes available for permanent foster, you
willl
be called but you will have to come and
get it quickly-usually within 24 hours.
- Permanent foster is not to be confused with temporary foster.
Temporary
fostering involves keeping an
animal for a while and returning it to the SPCA. We need temporary
foster
homes for animals who cannot stay
at the SPCA because they are sick, too young or pregnant.

This answers our questions about the fees and so on:)

WOW moondance that sucks. I worked at the spca about 6 years ago and left as well because the organization was shit. I was really not able to handle it. In the meantime after that I worked at kennels/hospitals and it was such a nice relief. I went back to the spca because I feel the organization is a lot better now. My boss is amazing. She is really fighting hard for these animals. She started about 3 years ago. Its wonderful. I am really ashamed actually from what u have told me - never been in the euthanizing room at the spca but have had been a witness of euthanized animals and it sucks very much. I can only imagine how it is at the spca. There is no intimacy there. I never take my cats to the vet there. I like to have a reltionship with my vet knowing my cats are in good hands.

That being said - I am a supporter of any animal foundation (not extremist) that tries to get our domestic animals off the streets/away from disease in nice homes. Whatever the deep sick secrets are of the spca - fuck it. Every person who leaves because of personal offense/emotions and doesnt try to help is not making the situation any better .Yes it sucks to see horrible sites like that - moondance sorry about the nightmares and stuff..me too I am kinda in a sad mood right now still (worked there today.) but we gotta be strong.

I have had a few dogs adopted and it feels good.

Noah: You are right in a way but like I said before preventing cats from getting spayed/nutoured will just make everything worse. yeah it sounds "evil" when we "cut off their balls" or whatever but it really is a good thing because if we didnt the spca would be a million times worse.

moondancer wrote on Fri Oct 6, 2006 @ 2:25pm from 198.168.5.117
I think the best thing you could do in that situation is be greatful to be able to help a cat that may not have otherwise had a chance. Being scammed sucks but you have to remember that it's about the cat not the person who scammed you.

My point exactly.

Murdock - I have adopted a few animals from the spca and so far so good except my cats when I adopted them they had the flu so I got them medication and they are in perfect health now. I dont know what negative feedback u are hearing but any time u can get an animal away from there is great. And they will be greatful to you. Also I never felt scammed by them. My pets and my families pets are all in pretty good shape.

But to those who give your animals to the spca...you all suck. We have 35 dogs now. All big dogs. NICE dogs. And they are thrown away like that. Come on.

Oh yah one more thing : moondance you are right not everyone is in it for the animals..I noticed that. Its mostly the people who work there not the volunteers. Its shameful!! The workers I find, have their little click and dont seem to eally give a shit.
My manager at my work also used to volunteer there maaany years ago - told me the same thing as [ u..org ] was crap. Ugh. It seems to be better now..lets hope I dont get any nasty surprises.

Really? A Bulldog was fostered for free the other day... BUT he had a skin problem so the foster family just took him and paid for the medication+checkups etc. I am surprised they made u pay half price. Was the cat perfectly healthy? If so thats probably why they asked u to pay half price ie u were working there AND it was a healthy cat up for adoption already. Fostering is usually only for the ones that are sick/not adoptable yet and need a temp home to get better so they dont pass the sickness around the shelter. IF the person decided to become a permanent foster parent for the sick animal they get it for free. On top of that this is a non profit organization - the gov doesnt do shit to help so yes all our contributions help in any way. I could be wrong about all this? But this is what my boss made me understand...

In my experience, Tabbys CAN be shy+are VERY independant but most were extremely outgoing and VERY smart. It all depends I guess. But the tabby rocks.

Moondancer thats nice u took the cat. Good for you:)

Betty Haze - I am a Benevole:) But I also study animal care/behaviour:) I have been working in the field for 4 years at different kennels/hospitals. Now I am working in a dumb office to get by school because the pay is good. Once I am saved enough money I plan to move to B.C. and get a nice job there with animals.

Anarkoid - yes it is really hard seeing animals u love get euthanized...its tough. Fuck I watched 8 Below and cried the whooole time..Im a big baby. LOL

Cats just dont magically get weird behaviour probs like that. (unless they are tortoise shells hehe)

The cat u want to get sounds like a typical tabby. They are the best. I always had tabbys. Very friendly, and loyal. I believe there are a lot of those right now at the spca. Check it out:

Because 1-there are too many and it might kill the cat population making all cats sick by spreading disease - 2 they will all mate and the stray cat population will grow leaving many sick and dying cats all over the place. It wont make anything better. People are stupid. Thats why its important to spay/nutour.
SPCA ONLY euthanizes animals who are very sick with fatal disease. The ones who just have the flu are up for fostering. And if no one is willing to foster then we have to put them down in order to not let it spread/take up massive amounts of room in the shelter. There is only so much they can do. Euthanizing is the last resort and a lot of people are very closed minded and not properly educated about all this.

There ARE shelters out there who are anti euthanizers...but they are idiots. They have shitloads of animals they refuse to kill but they are suffering anyways - starving+sick because they dont have the means to buy food/medication for them. There are too many to support. So in the end they are just being hypocrites,.

my main point is spay/nutour your pets so this shit doesnt happen. Thats all. and dont get a pet if u dont think u can handle the responsibility. they have feelings too.

ehm...very weird.
Where did u get the cat? How old is she? What kind of cat is it? Is it a tortoise shell? (dark brown with light brown spots all over)They are gorgeous cats but have major behaviour probs since born. Its a weird breed. We have tons of those at the spca - people give them up because they are just impossible. Should stop breeding them.

If the cats will be seperated then there shouldnt be a prob...
You could be right about the cat shitting on your side - if she is spoiled and litter is changed everyday she is just fucked up. I would have to ask my boss what to do with a cat like that. Might be a lost cause.

Will get back to u.

well cats are VERY VERY territorial. Not like dogs where they can adapt with other dogs/cats if trained.
Thats why I asked if he is home often...so the cat can have a lot of company and a playmate. When they are solo there is more chance of developing behaviour probs/depression. So yes the cat might feel tempted to play if he isnt home often...unless he gets 2 kittens;) That would be cool:)

subfl0wer
Coolness: 73490
Well how big is the apartment? and will the cat be going outside? How often are u home? I think depending on those answers it can work. If they are seperated then there shouldnt be a prob. Is the bitch of a cat smart enough to open the doors? My cats try to sneak in my rat room but so far they havent figured out how to open the door. One of my cats loves water and turns on the bathroom sink tap and plays in the water..which makes me nervous so I close the bathroom door when im not home.

And the cat shitting on your side of the apt is a sign of feeling neglected. Maybe your roomie should pay more attention to it...either that or the litter box isnt clean...so the cat tries to find a clean fresh area to shit in.

If u want to adopt a cat its 120$ everything inc.ie. spaying/nutouring/shots/medication. But like I said if u want to foster a sick cat u can, and end up keeping it if all goes well BUT then the SPCA leaves it completely up to u for paying for medications/nutouring/spaying. SO we have TONS of kittens now if u want to go and fill out foster parent papers...but the older cats are super nice too if u are interested.

Hope it works out ,thanks so much!!

The SPCA reallllyyyyyy needs temporary foster families for their cats. They are over flown with cats right now, and they are all really sick. We need foster families to take care of them until they get better so they can not pass their sickness to the other animals.

Just this morning about 15-20 cats were put down because they were sick.

If anyone is interested on being a temporary foster parent for any of our sick animals – even for rodents/birds/dogs, let me know!!
Thanks:)
