the first list doesn't look too bad... but I'd suggest a couple of small changes....

experimental -> glitch
(instead of experimental -> minimal)

techno -> hard techno
techno -> minimal
(which didn't previously appear)

and maybe have hardcore as a section of its own, rather than a subdivision of techno... as follows...

hardcore > breakcore
hardcore -> gabber
hardcore -> happy hardcore
hardcore -> hardtek
hardcore -> speedcore

sorry I missed it...

I moved on easter weekend and didn't get internet back until Saturday morning... still don't have phone set up. Sucks to have missed Lowtek... and if Matt/Satronica was in town... damn... he was in Ireland when I played at Fukkital last year - so I haven't seen him in a couple of years.

Galaksy... have you heard Bizzy B's Science III + IV on Planet-µ?

[ planet-mu.com ]

there's some great stuff on it... I'm told the vinyl on III is out of print already, but I managed to track down a copy of IV (double 10")... all hail the darkside of oldskool.

most of the stuff on Uncle Howie and Psycho+Logical is pretty fucked up. I've got a bunch of really early Necro stuff and it's great... not so crazy about his new stuff (collabs with Slipknot?)

The Dr. Dooom album is old as hell, but still kills... and there's some great stuff bubbling up on labels like Anticon, Chocolate Industries, Quannum and Deconstruction (Haiku D'Etat anyone)...

new Sage Francis has some great bits on it... and there's some new stuff in the pipe from Heiro.

TG and the various off shoots have done some pretty great stuff over the years... I think a lot of people dismiss TG as just being about noise, but there's a lot more going on than that. Heathen Earth is one of my all time favourite ambient albums.

I've been finding lots of classic techno records around lately (ie: several early Warp releases) - so I decided to put together a short mix of some classic tracks... well... it started out that way.

I don't think mixes need to be any specific length as long as they show what a DJ is capable of... I mean, there is nothing more boring than getting hour long demos where a DJ runs through nine tracks, letting them play all the way through and mixing the intro/outro. Personally I'd rather hear something shorter, but more intense.

It also depends quite a bit on style. DMC championships (a whole different animal, I know...) are decided on the basis of six-minute performances.

[ ] Down

It started out innocent enough, but twenty minutes in, the faces began to melt together and everything became menacing. It seemed that there was nowhere to go but down, when suddenly something familiar appeared and pulled you from the darkness. There was a moment of uneasiness, and then a warm feeling passed through you and there was a sense of relief that it was all in your mind.

I've seen Doormouse perform on two PCs running FT2 + two turntables for live sampling... that was sick... but when he brought in Josh Anonymous to handle scratching and sampling and concentrated on the trackers himself... that was sicker...

Snares did a few shows using Octamed, but got fed up with the downtime caused by crashing computers and switched over to using cds.

Oliver - it probably has something to do with the fact that there hasn't been much support for the breakcore shows that have taken place out here... I mean, shit... Black Market and crew put together some sick line ups at Flexout... and the Venetian Snares show last year was fuckin' great - but there really isn't a promoter that's bothered slipping it into the line-up lately. Hell, I think I've played Toronto more than Montreal in the last year.

I know you were all wondering if it really was possible to mix classic 80's metal with breakcore beats... now you can find out.

Judas Priest's Heavy Duty/Defenders Of The Faith gets the breakcore treatment with beats courtesy of Venetian Snares Mismo Canibalismo from the Salt ep on Zhark.

I didn't mean embarrassing in a good way... I meant that it's terrible. Basically sounds like they took "Badass" and stripped the vocal sample off and replaced it with "P-P-P-Perfect!"

I think the Plug remix is on the other side... which is the only reason I hung onto it... that, and I'm a completist...

can't pick just one... here's three...

Defender - 3D & Snuggles (Ghetto Safari 001)
the remix that Panacea did on Ghetto Safari 003 is pretty slick... but... damn... the original is the shit.

The Void - E-Sassin (Soundsphere 003)
fucking brilliant... y'know that foghorn sound that runs through Shadow Boxing? This track is what Shadow Boxing wishes it could be. Serious. It all harkens back to Frontal Sickness by The Mover, but... damn...

Force Is Electric - Ed Rush (No U-Turn 011)
The remix on No U-Turn 012 is hot shit as well... you can practically feel your brain frying when the sizzling sound cuts through your frontal lobe.

This is a bit of a shock, and it certainly puts a damper on things. I was proud to be a part of We Are Slaves II, and I find it sad to think that was the last time I saw Jason.

He was a tireless supporter of the hardcore scene, and was one of the few people that I tended to see at hardcore shows no matter who had organized them. On a personal note, he was a big help to me when I moved here from Winnipeg... and I owe him a lot more thanks than I was ever able to pay him.

From what I understand the venue was a last minute decision, due to problems with other locations. Would you rather that the party didn't happen at all? I thought not.

Seriously, though... how hardcore are you if you're sitting around bitching about the temperature? The promoters brought in world-class talent and half of y'all are throwing a hissy fit about breaking a sweat... I can't wait for kids to start whining about the heat making them metabolise their drugs too fast.

Not sure... but I played a show with him here in '97 (Produkted) which was pretty sick. He got slotted for an hour, but only came with a 40 minute set... to fill time Takeshi Muto came out and they did a 20 minute improv set. Pure sickness.

I caught him again 2 years later at Even Furthur. Cody 43D (who does the art work for a lot of the Chocolate Industries releases) put together one of the stages and had some sick-ass-shit booked. Devine absolutely killed it that night. One of the best sets I heard all weekend.
