If my child was self-identifiying with the opposite gender since child hood, was mature, serious, and had thought it thru, and at 16 wanted a sex-change operation, I would probably let them. I would simply want to put my child in the best position possible to make the proper decision. If I thought he had all the information he was ever going to need/get, and there was no added value to making him wait longer (because its not goign to reduce the uncertainty of the decision), then whats the point of making him wait? He's not magically going to wake up at 17 or 18 and be like "I feel like a boy now, even though for the past 16 years im sure I felt like a girl" |

Your profile says your 22, so you're still too young to realise it yet, but man, NO ONE at 16 is "mature" and "thinks things through" enough for making a life-altering decision of this magnitude. When you're a teenager, you've got hormones rampaging through your body and fucking everything up, including affecting how you think and your mood. Teenagers, both male and female, are pretty much PMSing 100% of the time, it's just that at some points they're less crazy than others. When you're 16, you think you're king of the world; you hate your parents because it's in your nature to go against everything and learn on your own by making your own mistakes. You think that everything that anyone tells you to do is bad, that every adult is just stupid and out to turn you into a clone of themselves.. But really, they're just trying to keep you from REALLY fucking your life up by making stupid decisions like doing drugs when you're young (hormones are modifying your body, and you go and poison those hormones with chemicals that some biker mixed up in a bathtub somewhere? Yeah, REALLY great decision).. If you really ARE 22, you're still too close to your "insane hormone" period to realise how much of a douche/idiot you are right now. Usually, despite people thinking puberty lasts only for your teens, it still goes in mildly and tapers off untill you're around 25+.. Then your brain is "free" from all the insanity that the hormones cause you and you look back and think "Holy fuck, man, what the FUCK was I thinking?" about 90% of the things you ever did. There is NO such thing as a "mature" 16 year old. There's very few mature 25 year olds, and there's very few mature 30 year olds, but that's about when you've got enough of a head on your shoulders to be able to properly think things through and make real important, life-altering decisions about yourself. |

No, I'm pretty certain EVERYONE at 16 is going through puberty, unless you've got some sort of hormonal problem. Puberty by it's very nature is the exact same thing as women going through PSM; it's a ton of hormones flooding your system, and those hormones affect your logic, reasoning and emotions. At that age you are in absolutely NO state of mind to make a decision like that; chances are, untill your brain has had time to "level out" with the hormones, you should not be deciding anything as major as that. We should accept people for who they are, yes. And who they are up untill they're around their mid-20s changes every couple of months/weeks, because they're being bombarded 24/7 with thought-altering chemicals. Letting a 16 year old decide to have a sex-change is about as responsible as letting someone on acid decide that they really CAN fly because they believe it; their mind is NOT in the right place. Who you are is on the inside; your thoughts, your life experiences. You don't need any sort of surgery to be yourself, that "need" is just the result of our culture having evolved to a point where people can turn their fantasy into reality, and they're told constantly that they're not good enough and that they can have whatever they want. Does a person need a sex-change to live? No. Heart-surgery if they've got clogged arteries, yeah. Does someone need a breast augmentation because their life depends on it? No. But getting an apendix removed, yeah that can save a life. A sex-change is an un-necesary cosmetic surgery that people are told they can get to make them "feel better", but really, their whole life they'll still know the one truth that they can't ever forget; that's NOT who they are, because that's NOT how they were born, it's just a fantasy that they had that got encouraged by an industry that charges outrageous prices for an un-necesary cosmetic surgery. |
