believe me, the irony isn't lost on me :P

I mean, how many people have been killed because one scientist's theory was different than another's theory? How many quantum physicists have been persecuted and killed because they weren't psychologists? How many neurosurgeons have been put to death for contradicting a chemist?

How much good has religion brought us, really? Muslim suicide bombers, the roman-catholic pedophiles asociation, the near-universal dehumanisation of women, crusades, genocide, slaughter of children born to parents of a different "faith"...

If they can't get along, they should get thrown the fuck out so that those of us that want to live free of their psychological-disorder-induced bullshit are free to live our own lives.

Some religions do have good qualities to them. For instance, look at the percentage of jews that have won nobel prizes in economics, biology, physics... its uncanny when you think theres less than 15 million of them and the predijuce that they have faced. That religion is clearly doing something right that other secular societies are not....think of all the good that has happened because of those inventions.
I'm feeling apathetic right now..

Had they not been jewish, they'd have made those same inventions and contributions to society.

But take a look at israel/palastine now; the jews are blowing up schools, using illegal weapons that are a breach of human-rights on non-millitary targets (including bombs designed specifically to cause amputation of legs to all those around using a substance that is an extreme carcinogen; all those people that survive will have to live without limbs and an almost 100% certainty of developing cancer within a couple of years)

You want to know what other jews that aren't in israel think of the israelis bombing schools full of innocent children?

"nothing good is gonna come out of this untill they wipe them all out", as one woman says.

Remember the last time someone tried to "wipe them all out" for good? Right, WW2, a man named Adolph Hitler that you may have heard of.

And why is all this being done? Because some book tells them that israel is "their" land, and that they're the "chosen people of god", which puts them above everyone else.

I think CUTTERHEAD needs to come to terms with their own insecurity and move on.

Genders are not as dual as we think they are. Many people are born "in between" and are "assigned genders" by the doctor when they are born. Nature is not a black/white thing... it's a sliding scale. Non-heterosexuality is completely normal and natural and humans are the only animals who have managed to create religious dogmas against it.

Everyone should ask themselves: Is that person's non-heterosexuality hurting me? Is their non-heterosexuality hurting others? No! Then get over it, and stop spreading hate.

I have to disagree with you there! The reason why there are so many successful professional people of Jewish heritage is not because of their religion. How many orthodox Hassidic Jews do you see as scientists/doctors etc? NONE. It's the secular non-religious Jews who are. (for example, my family)

Jews had a difficult last few hundred years, and are used to having to try very hard to get anywhere. Now that they are on an even footing with everyone else when it comes to being able to get jobs, have the opportunities that everyone else does... it's expected that they'll do very well because it's now in their traditional upbringing to push hard to succeed.

It's the same thing with oriental people coming here and doing well in school. It's not because of religion. It's because things are more competitive in Asia, so when they come here they are used to trying hard to succeed and taking school very seriously.

There's a reason why my IB classes were 90% asian and jewish males. It's not because asians, jews, or males are smarter than non-asians/jews/males.. it's because that's who's pushed to succeed.

Oh n I'm pretty sure I knew I was omnisexual when I was 8 years old. I may have been a growing kid with a lot of hormones going through me but that didn't change the fact that I was comprehending the fact that am attracted to all genders. Saying that someone can't understand or know something that important when they are young is not very fair. I know that we change and grow and our ideals and ways change... but there are some things that you can be very certain on, even at that age. If you're a girl in a guy's body, that is one of those things.

I don't know the specifics of their surgery or if it's good or bad that she got it done young.. so I can't say if I think she should have waited a couple more years or not. For all I know, it could be a good thing that she did it early. I know that some surgeries are best done as young as possible so that the person's body can develop with the changes.

Screwhead: THEY DID NOT INTERVIEW ME.

They filmed a pro-Israel rally. They weren't interviewing any Jews who don't agree with Israel's actions (like me).

People generally do what they are programmed into (Jews are taught from birth that we have a God given right to Israel, that everyone else is out to get/terrorize us, etc etc). It's not the individual Jews' faults, just the system itself.

I love my mother dearly, she is one of the most loving and caring people you would every meet. She also believes in Israel (though she's not 100% happy with what the government is doing there now) and doesn't understand why I'm so against Zionism. She's been programmed.

I dunno if they would have. I think a lot of how you end up is based on the nurture you get through childhood. Im not saying being a jew causes you to make positive contributions to society. I think that theres somethign within the religious culture of Judaism that makes children in those families more likely to pursue and excel in education, work hard, and want to be successful in whatever they do.

If you take 12 million Jews assume they were all in a position to win nobel prizes at birth, and say theres about 1 Billion people on this earth who had this minimum starting position...then Jews should represent 1.2% of all nobel prizes. In Economics that number is north of 30% I believe. You can't simply say thats luck, because statistically speaking thats impossible. The culture is doing something that other cultures are not. It might not be the fact that they go to their temple on saturdays. It might be that they have tight knit families and communities, help one another though informal safety nets, and place a high importance on education and hard work in their community. The religion has a lot to do with that either directly or indirectly.

Is there bad parts to relgion? I think so; the biggest is probably that they evolve slowly and tend to be reactionary. They don't keep up with social movements such as gay right and abortion. As far as wars and religion, IMO they serve as a backdrop to create passion for the cause because its an identity people hold on to quite strongly. Its much like nationalism in secular culture. Look at the american was on Iraq. By using "attacking freedom" Bush was able to invigorate the nationalistic pride of the citizenry into supporting it. Religious wars are no different. They simply play on ones identity. If you're american and you think someone is threatinging your way of life, you will want to fight back. If your islamic and someone says americans are attacking our way of life, you too will fight back.

To Miche's point, Jew's weren't exactly in the best position on the wealth tables until quite recently. They were discriminated against a lot; before and after WWII. So I dunno if you can simply point to the culture of professionals within the community. Thats a recent phenomenon.
Update » Gamos wrote on Sun Feb 8, 2009 @ 5:02pm
To Miche...reread your post. Its interesting for sure, and it probably has a lot to do with it. I remember a prof talking about what you were saying, how second generation immagrents were more likely to end up higher on the income distribution tables than an average native (3+ generations) born for that exact reason. However that effect severely weakened by the 3rd generation...they become like all other native born by that point.

But I think in the case of Judaism theres more to it because its a cultural thing; it doesnt disapear after simply one generation...And they seem to be overly successful. If it was the case for all 2nd generation immagrents, then we should see more asians on the lists of achievements, but we don't.

I regret joining this tread at such a late time. I know [ rave.ca ] loves judging everyone and half the time that's the fun of it right?
But living as a male when you 100 % you should be a female is really difficult and there is a high level of suicide within the trans community.
Yes it is questionable about letting a 16 year old have the procedure but the earlier done the easier the transition, plus to have this done she would have had to consult with many medical professionals.
Read a fucking book on trans issues or about someones life story. Or even better, before you make your judgments about other people, why don't you wait until you meet someone who is trans.
Fred, I adore you but seriously "A person getting a sex-change is like a lazy fat person (not someone who's genuinley got a glandular problem) getting liposuction; it's a quick-fix to a deeper psychological issue that needs to be addressed." This reminds me of years back with people thinking that it's wrong to be gay and that it's really a deeper psychological issue. Yes it is a huge life change but I feel it's so incredibly ignorant to go on a group of people which most here probably know very little about and make a whole bunch of assumptions
I'm feeling nothing right now..
