Something Needs To Be Done...

I know last time there was troll problems, someone suggested a solution (like if 20 people mark you as troll you get banish or something).

Serisously, I think something needs to be done. Just look at the general section today. Lazer_28 even admits to be here only to make this board unbarable. I know the "ignore" solution won't work and it's getting really boring and repetitive.

I personally love this board. It's the first board I ever posted on. I made friends that I see every week here and they have changed my life. This place is a part of my daily routine and I love it (I know it's sounds corny but it's true).

Please, let's find a solution before it becomes only crap and garbage. :(

It already has gone too far IMHO.

I dunno why the ignore can't work... It's cause people still reply to him... You should blame other people... Although I put him back in the mass ignore...

I know, it's everyones fault :p that I get! Mine too since I have let him get the best of me many times :) And I listen to the voice of reason (ie screwhead) and put him on ignore.

but he's getting pretty hard to ignore (people quoting him and everyhting). And he is almost in every thread now...

I don't know, I find it just really sad that one person can actually ruined it for everyone...

I'm not gonna try and sway your oppinion, because for the most part, I totally agree with you Noah that there should be no censorship on the internet.

BUT, censorship is different than moderation.

Censorship would be, for example, banning people/deleting threads that talk about something you don't like, people who express views different than yours, people who don't listen to the same kind of music that you do, etc..

Moderation, on the other hand, in this case, would be to keep people from trolling and disrupting the conversations and people's interactions.

Despite it being really cliché to use a party as an example, think of it like this for the difference:

People are talking about drum and bass at a psytrance party. The promoter hears them, calls security, and has them thrown out of the party because they weren't talking about psytrance.

This is censorship.

Now, people are at a party, talking, dancing, having fun, whatever. Now this guy comes in, sober or not, that's a total pain in the ass. He's going up to everyone that's trying to have a conversation and yelling and screaming at them for no reason. He's going up to random girls and grabbing their ass/trying to kiss them/trying to hug them without their permission. He's going around and opening up people's backpacks and looking through their stuff and throwing it all over the place. He's walking up to the DJ in the middle of a mix and starts scratching one of the records and ends up knocking the needle off and scratching his record. He's going around and taking people's drinks off their table and walking off drinking them.

Now, people are getting sick and tired of this guy. People are starting to leave your party. These people are calling their friends and telling them not to show up, because it's not fun. The rest of the DJs on the lineup tell you they're going to take their record bags and go home, because of the blatant dissrespect shown to them by said douchebag. People are complaining, the vibe of the party goes to shit, you're losing your DJs and party-goers fast.

Do you A: let this guy stay at the party and let him do what he's been doing, because "well, this is a party for everyone", or do you B: get security to kick this guy out, because if he stays, you're going to have no DJs and an empty room (minus this one guy) and your reputation for throwing parties will be forever ruined.

Kicking out the douchebag isn't censorship, it's moderation. He's having a negative impact on everyone else around him, he can't behave himself (even after a warning), and he has absolutely NOTHING to contribute to anyone around him.

As much as I love ravewave and I love your whole stance on no censorship and on having the board be open to total freedom of expression, the board NEEDS moderation. Just like you move threads about radio shows or new songs to the music section, some users need to be moved over to the door and pushed out on their merry way, because you're going to end up with an empty board if you don't have SOME sort of enforced no-blatant-trolling rule, and the only person you'll have to blame for it is yourself for not taking a stand.

Those links at the top and bottom of the page say that we're currently in the Ravewave community; the community has spoken on MULTIPLE occasions. Are you going to listen to what the community has to say, or are you going to ignore them and let them fend for themselves.

Fred, don't even try. Lord knows how many times I posted the EXACT SAME ANALOGY you posted and it didn't sway Noah in the least until his PM Inbox was full.

Here's what I posted in another thread :

Ok, here's something I don't get.

Nuclear, why is it *NOT OK* to BAN Gayzer again (let's admit, we need him around here as much as we need an enema) but it is *OK* to force him on EVERYONE's Ignore List. Wouldn't it just be easier to ban him instead of forcing people not to see his posts ?

What is the purpose of having someone on a message board if you are forcing everyone not to see what he posts ? Just in case he writes something worth reading ? Has that EVER happened ?

And what in heavens made you think this time would be ANY DIFFERENT than last time ?

I'm not getting the " no, we will not have any rules on here " while some type of censorship is accepted.

AGAIN, every other board on the interwebz has moderators but HERE. What is so damn hard to have those here ? Please get out of Fantasy Land and accept the fact that NOT ALL HUMAN BEINGS GET ALONG , as much as you'd like to. And you CAN'T force people to get along EITHER.

And I am NOT enjoying having the blame put on EVERYONE on the board but the troll himself.

If I am having a party at my place and my toilet bowl somehow catches on fire, it would be completely stupid of any of my guests to throw their alcohol beverages into it to make it worse, indeed. But what do you think I'll be looking for : all the idiots that helped make the fire worse or, I dunno, maybe WHO MANAGED TO START THE FIRE IN THE FIRST PLACE ?

Anyway, I'll stop there, I know all this is in vain. AGAIN.
I'm feeling fallout 3 right now..

Yeah, it's funny.. without asking or anything, a couple of weeks ago I just randomly ended up with mod status on another board I post on (I've been jumping around from board to board as they close with that group of people since 98, and finally one of them got tired of relying on other boards and opened up his own that he wasn't gonna shut down)..

Now, as of yesterday, I see a new link pop up at the top of the page; "There are X users waiting aproval" and a message in my mailbox telling me that he's made the board require aproval instead of being on an automatic aproving for new accounts to keep spammers and trolls out.

Those of us that have been hanging out online for nearly 10 years are all pretty much just one step removed from being full-on administrators; we can ban/delete users, aprove new user signups, merge/split threads, edit others' posts, etc..

You'd be amazed at how clean the board is. We've got zero spam, zero trolls, zero flaming, and zero complaints from anyone about how anything is done. Out of every board I've been on, that's the one that's really the friendliest, despite the fact that there are all sorts of people with varying oppinions on a lot of things (like, we've got one guy that's a fairly racist/homophobic pro-bush/mccain texan) and we've never had a single thread degenerate into a flame-war, never had anyone abusing their mod powers, nothing, because we're a community that respects each other despite our varying oppinions.
I'm feeling like shit right now..

Exactly! There's just a few extreme cases where people should, at the very least, be warned to keep things civil, and if they don't and keep blatantly ripping into people, then they should get a ban. Maybe a temporary ban at first; say 1-2 weeks unable to access the site/login. And then, when the temp ban is over, if they come back and don't keep themselves reined in, well fuck you, full ban.

Precisely !

I mean, it works for EVERY OTHER BOARD, why on earth wouldn't it work here ?

And yes, we NEED the drama on here obviously but if there is one thing this board has proven me is that it is possible to have tons of drama WITHOUT resorting to trolling OR at the expense of everyone's enjoyment. :)

BTW Screwhead, what board were you referring to in your previous post ?

Oh and thanks for the vote of confidence Raton. :D

Well, I do agree with everything you guys said. And yes, moderation is one of my motto.

That being said, I kinda liked the fact that we, as a group, tend to moderate threads without the need for someone having more "power" than everyone else. For example, I wouldn't post as much if the.neoform was made a moderator...

But yeah, seems "failtonite" Laxxor is impervious to our little group-moderation thing... It's obvious he acts this way out of some perverted need for human contact, but... I say ban, yes. This is an extreme case.

the board is the one over at [ zombiedeathhouse.com ] , it's a horror movie board :P

we started off at the Diabolical Dominion untill some drama made all the loyal members leave, then we had a few different boards set up on ProBoards, then the guys from Spining Graveyard productions put up a board we were using, and when that went down, Dr. Menard decided 'fuck it, no more wandering the internet for us anymore, I'm gonna give our little horror family it's home!'

Granted, we don't get nearly a fraction of the trafic and barely have any users on that board, but still, for the small community that it is, we've done an amazingly good job at keeping civil.

Hell, I've got the guy who runs the site's home phone number down in Madison (I think it's Virginia) incase anything fucks up with the board and he's not online to fix it at the moment.
