I know this has already been discussed but times change.
Someone recently told me about some great cheap monitors that were the standard for a small home studio. What were they?

Otherwise, what would you fellows suggest for some under 1000$ ($300-$600)ish studio monitors? Much appreciate any answers. And I will be doing research on my own obviously, this is just the first step.

the alesis are really good acctually...

the higher end model has a remote too...

and usually you don't need a sub with an 8" woofer.

The problem I find with smaller moniters is that there not too good with low frequencies. You get something where all the bass comes out as one generic note.

I think I listened to every single god-damned moniter that exists though when I was buying mine. What I sujjest you do is bring a cd with you to a music shop, and put a bunch of songs you know well on it. Songs that are produced very well, and some stuff that isn't produced so well but you know where the mistakes are. The general rule is pick the moniter that allows you to pick up on the production mistakes you knew about previously the best. Not the ones that sound the best.

Moniters are a really personal thing though, find the ones you like. There's no suck thing as the best when your buying this sort of shit.

Mind you if you ask me the Mackie HR824's were my clear favourite, fallowed closely by the genelec 8030 I think.
I'm feeling refreshed :) right now..

I think you sort of get the idea how much choice you got here, buying moniters was single-handedly the most difficult purchase I ever made.

In my experience none of the rockets were up to par. If you want a pair of moniters for under 500$ I think Berhinger Truth moniters were supposed to be pretty tight. One thing with moniters though, I think it's a better idea to save up your money and buy something you really like. It's like buying a ferrari and getting super cheap tires. Your moniters are what allow you to hear what your doing.

From what I remember about KRK there was something I really didn't like about the V 8's. I think it had something to do with the bass. Mind you alot of people use them and get good results.
I'm feeling annoyed right now..

well i'm really happy with my rp5. i mean i do have a small room and i dont wanna be deaf soon heheheh. also they really sounds good.

i mean 75 watts it's pretty enough for me right now and i think those ones with the KRK woofer would be killer heheheheh

thing is if youre gonna invest extra coin on rocket 8's you'll prolly want the sub that goes with for a good sound... anyways thats what i've been reading from reviews all over and when were talking extra coin its getting kinda ridiculously alot more!

I dont feel rp5 needs sub... it does lack in extreme lows... like bellow 50hz but above that, nice.
I'm feeling fucking blissful right now..

Whatever...

anything in that price range is prosumer anyway...

whatever you get is gunna be something your gunna want to replace after awhile...

i'd put my money down on the alesis before the rockets personaly... (and i just might too ;o)

if i had mad cash though....

i'd be looking at something from these guys...

If you will be using the speakers in a big room, I suggest going for 8 inch drivers regardless of the brand you get, you will need the bass.

I found Alesis monitors are a good value but you should check them out before buying.

Hmmmmm, I wouldn't really want to get anything that I'd have to replace, are 'good' monitors really necessarily going to cost me more than 1000$? That seems like a bit much to me... This is for a small home studio and all I really want is something nice and accurate. Sure I can 'afford' something better but again, these speakers are going to be solely for production... so any flat frequency monitors will do... what do the high end (more than a grand) monitors do that the lower end (sub 1000$) fail to achieve? In other words, why would I want to replace them?

good pro monitors cost more like 2000$...

and many of them require a proffesional amp to power them.

a good monitor sounds cold and harsh... so you can isolate the discrepencies in your sound and correct them

prosumer monitor are still a little warm sounding and most of them really arent much different than you average hifi set up.

but thats no reason not to use them either...

i have friends who pressed records and did thier mixdown on shitty 200$ edirols too and the results were fine...

but what i'm getting at is... don't expect to drop 6 or 7 hundred bucks on monitors that are profesional industy standard as these monitors aren't aimed at proffesionals... they are aimed at your average punk ass home music makers like you and me for small "project studios" like we all have at home.

Those 200$ edirols really suck! I've used them.

I've seen plenty of video and radio people who use lower end monitors (500$ range).

But I can say cheap monitors will still kick the shit out of 2.1 or 5.1 computer speaker setups, those are very coloured sounding (inaccurate/not flat).

yeah those edirols are garbage...

dave (subtone) made his first release on them though...

since then he's upgraded to some mackies i think...

i just trying to explain the difference, while still giving an example that the lower end can still get the job done.

all I need is to get the job done, no way I'm spending 2000$ on speakers with no garantee of making money in the too near future. I guess I would upgrade eventually, but much much further down the line. I really just need some home studio, I guess prosumer, I guess i bought the iMac as my production machine instead of the PowerMac Pro, so i am in that low-mid range of production. but i am also sure you guys understand why 2000$ for speakers is just not possible at this point...
so mackie are good, krk rokit 5 or 8, and Event TR...
time to slither on over to eBay... then moog and steve's when I have time :)
