Friends of a B.C. man say he was aboard one of the six vessels that were part of a convoy attacked by Israeli commandos off the coast of Gaza.

At least 10 people were killed and dozens more were wounded Monday after Israeli defence forces raided the main ship in the flotilla, which was trying to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian territory has been under a blockade for three years, imposed by Israel and Egypt after the militant group Hamas assumed control of Gaza in 2007.

Victoria environmentalist Zoe Blunt says her friend, Kevin Neish, was on one of the vessels.

Blunt said she has been keeping in touch with Neish, 53, a Victoria resident, and last heard from him on Thursday.

"These were all peace activists. I don't believe that they were armed," she said.

"I certainly don't believe that they would be provoking commandos with automatic weapons. What they were doing was, they were trained in non-violence. Kevin's job specifically was to defend the journalists on the ship."
Believed to be alive

Blunt said organizers believe Neish's boat is safe.

"I've just spoken to the organizer for Free Gaza in Washington, D.C.," she told CBC News on Monday morning.

"He's telling me that the Challenger 2 has been brought in to port in ... Israel and we don't have any access to the people on the ship but he believes there were no casualties on board the ship Kevin is on."

Blunt said organizers say no one will be able to talk with Neish until at least Tuesday.

She believes Neish was the only Canadian among the 600 people aboard the flotilla.

What blockade?

As far as Im concerned, Israel owns Gaza waters. And Gaza. And the rest of Palestine. And all the palestinan people. And thats where this ship was going. So if Israel wants to kill people on board this boat, its self-defense.

Its all self-defense

Second Gamos you're one ignorant guy. 2008 Israel attack on Plestine is still pretexted as rocket launching even though although the cease-fire, Hamas has proven reliable in withholding rocket fires, the very few that got through were not linked to Hamas (I think even Israel agree on that). On the other side, Israel was not respecting its side of the bargain loosening up its grip on resources.

Israel keep lying through their teeth and people keep believing everything without seeking other opinions. Simply put, Hamas is being denied sovereignty over wrongful claims of being an irresponsible government.

Historically, many parties in the arab region hold extremist views and have its own militia, although the power that be will play chess with those ; they'll simply turn a blind eye on the favored of the moment.

no thats rediculous. Israel is defending itself.

cbc
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is defending Israeli commandos who launched a deadly raid on a flotilla of humanitarian ships destined for Gaza, saying they acted in self-defence.

Read more: [ www.cbc.ca ]

See...attacking a flotilla of humanitarian ships was self defense. Its not that complicated. Why else would you attack a humanitarian ship other than to defend yourself?

A humanitarian ship is no different than a bunch of terrorists with guns or a nuclear bomb. Israelis must protect themselves.

Quite a different POV, and while I think it's all a really fucked up situation, you attack soldiers like that, you *ARE* going to get a response...

Bunch of bad things went down that lead to a even worse outcome....

it's a publicity stunt. A fucking STUPID one. They knew they had no chance of getting through.

Idiots. Go through a blockade in a region where weapons are regularly smuggled, then attack members of a military who don't play well with protestors, and see what happens.

QFT, especially knowing they would get a military response, then to attack them like that. What did they think would happen?

we don't seem to get the same info...

the problem is that the Israeli commando attacked this convoy in international waters... they had no rights to do so and that's why the international community and particularly Europe is piss off...

oh btw yeah it is a necessary publicity stunt because Gaza is Israel's Warsaw ghetto.

300,000 palestinian refuges in Lebanon, who live in ghettos and are not allowed any basic rights.

Israel's neighbours bash their policy but the truth is none of them want palestinians in their country either.

They gladly send over weapons but don't do shit for the humanitarian problem

Trust me I actually know some palestinians and they are treated nearly or just as badly in the arab world

This is a general discussion about the current event. I'm not posting a news article. I'm using a news article to bring up the issue of how Israel continues to repeatedly break international law and at what point the reasoning of "defending itself" becomes a sorry excuse for expanding illegal settlements beyond the 1967 borders.

Illegal control of gaza strip via control of waterways, airspace, and borders; ie - illegal blockade that results in Palestinians living in poverty and a malnourished state.

Repeated inappropriate use of force

Non-proliferation and possession of nuclear weapons

This attack is war crime on behalf of the Israelis. Unilateral boarding a ship in international waters without an international resolution is illegal and gives THOSE ON BOARD a right to defend themselves. That the israeli's boarded the ship at all in international waters is illegal. That they used disproportionate use of force against civilians in this situation make its a war crime.

I will bet that Israelis shot first, from the helicopter. No one is dumb enough to attack soldiers with wooden sticks. And it just goes to show how ridiculous the Israeli assertion is that those on board were smuggling weapons. If it was, wouldn't they use them to attack the soldiers who were shooting at them?

This is such bullshit.

At least Betty_Haze gets how bullshit this is. DrTako, palestinans have their own country for a reason. If these savages in Israel actually let them live peacefully they would be able to build a strong civil society and live with dignity

what's your opinion on the fact that palestinians are treated like shit in all the countries surrounding Israel as well?

For instance, a friend of mine is afraid of his family getting kicked out of Jordan, who have lived there for years. They previously had to leave saudi arabia.

Where's the protest against Lebanon's refuge camps with 300,000 people who are given no basic human rights?

Where's the protest against Britain who previously controlled the territory, or the Ottoman empire who controlled the territory?

The english were the ones responsible for carving up the land and allowing Israel to be created.

Oh wait, of course, only Israel is to blame.

Refugees aren't citizens. The refugees of Palestine aren't Jordan's problem. Its the worlds problems. Every country in the world is responsible for refugees, not the just the host country. European and Western countries have made that clear. Refugees are temporary until the UN finds a home for them whether that home is Austria, England, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Austrailia, Japan, Jordan, etc. There is no way Jordan's economy could integate that many Palestinian as citizens inside its country.

However, who is the cause of those refugees? Israel
What is the reason that palestians live in poverty? Israel
What is the reason palestinans can't lead a normal economic life? Israel

Yasser Arafat was ready to agree to peace with Israel in accordance with the pre-1967 lines with Rabin via the Oslo, but Rabin was assinated. Whether it was the strategy of the new Prime Minister (also the current prime minister), or of the Israelis top brass all along, there was no intention of peace on behalf of the the Israelis. They backtracked on the oslo arragements, and gave arrafat an offer he couldn't accept knowing full well it would undermine the entire peace process. The israelis wanted:

1) Control of air space in palestine
2) Control of water access in palestine
3) Control of borders
4) Land swaps that were in the Israelis favor

Explain to me how a country that small is expected to prosper if it can't export or import what it needs?

As further proof, when the security wall was built, they stole even more land and built the wall well outside the pre-1967 borders.

So yes, eveything is the Israelis fault because they're mean spirted. The Zionist movement actually states that they have a right to the Palestinans land. And they want it. So they intend to make palestine theirs by feigning peace attempts using a bullshit strategy to "defend themselves" which is just an excust provoke attack. All of this is to bide time so they can increase illegal settlements. That way, they can make more and more land swaps in their favor.

Even now israelis continue to steal more land via illegal settlements. If israelis are willing to peace, why wouldn't they stop building illegal settlements that would have to come down in the event of a peace agreement? The truth is that they don't want peace. They just want more land and don't give a shit of the palestians they kill or improvrish in the process

The Irony is the state of Israel is probably the first time either Palestinians or Jews had any control over that land.

In the past it has been ruled by: Persians, Turks, Greeks, Byzentines, Crusaders...... Pretty much anyone who had an army
