Oh and to cutterhead:

I wasn't talking about djs, i'm talking about music lovers buying full albums on vinyl. The masses are starting to buy everything on vinyl again now. And I think it's fucking awesome.

I work in the record business and everyone is very excited about this.
I'm feeling tipsy for prez 2009 right now..

nin / tool / manson / nofx has been doing this for a long time , i still dont think its mainstream yet.

could your numbers come from the fact that 99% of people steals their music online , and the 1$% remaining is the music buing djs community.

even if they sell 2027 revamped turntables at rat shack , i dont think more than a percent of the population plays them daily.
I'm feeling tarfu right now..

DJs might be opting for serato... and yes, there's a whole lot of people getting stuff online (via legal and illegal means)... but the recent development is that people who abandoned vinyl in the 80's... people who bought into cds, and ditched their collections because they were living in small apartments, or had young children... and didn't have the time, or the room for records... a lot of those people have careers, and grown up children, and houses... and they're coming back.

In a weird way, record collections are the new midlife crisis... the people that were buying sports cars 20 years ago are opting to seek out original pressings of records they remember from their youth... or they're digging up jazz albums that have never made it to cd... DJs, for the most part, have moved on... and the shops that catered specifically to that market have suffered... the shops that appeal to a wider clientele have survived... and despite a few closures there are some really great shops in this city...

my picks:
Beatnick
Atom Heart
Cheap Thrills
Soundcentral
Death of Vinyl

as for the chain stores... well... they fucked themselves right in the ass when they replaced knowledgeable staff with people who can run a till and look hip while they're doing it... their focus shifted from having employees that were able to introduce people to music, and sell the back catalog that actually turns a profit, to relying on a 'range' of proven sellers - and a chart wall that might move a lot of units, but has an extremely weak profit margin...

Of course, this is just my opinion based on observations made during 10+ years of work in the industry...
I'm feeling new records right now..

and a good one , i agree

i see your point with serato , i am into it as long as it doesnt replace the analog version of vinyl.
as a second medium , like dvd & cd.

i discog a lot , considering half the stores closed down in mtl ... i used to love doing them all, and when taboo closed for the second time, the chat i had with the owner about clientele , it became obvious to me that thou some of us are really into buying 1k$ worth monthly , most of ppl arent.

that made me fear the wrose, honestly
I'm feeling tarfu right now..

This is straight from someone at Chemical Records.. they freaked out a little also since they sell them.

I don't want to be a bitch but passing on false information that you haven't verified yourself is as bad as starting the rumour in the first place. Even TQS apologize when they divulgate information fasle info.
