The Sailors on those fist boats must have had a rare form of OPTIMISM to believe that a couples weeks at sea in that direction would not lead them to certain death.

I'll take the illusion of strength over the illusion of weakness any day.

But they weren't going on blind faith, were they? At the time, the popular, faith-based consensus was that the earth was flat, and the sun rotated around us, as we were the center of the universe, but he had enough understanding and knowledge of things to deduce that the earth was round..

Was it a leap of faith; considering he was in the minority, yes.

But he wasn't basing his deduction or reasoning on "Well, this book said so, and everyone else believes it, so it must be true", he examined, studied, and "discovered" that the earth was round. At the time, yes it was an untested hypothesis, but he turned that hypothesis into a discovery. Sure, sailing the seas is different than conducting an experiment in a lab, but what he did was more akin to a scientific theory than to blind faith.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

I like your optimism, but I don't agree with the historical analogy.

The Vikings were highly skilled seafarers. the practice of "going viking" stemmed from economic necessity. Lack of arable land, and the fact that the firstborn inherited the estate, meant that the other sons had to strike out on their own to find their way in the world. They weren't just raiders... once they found desirable land, they settled, built cities, and married into the local tribes, as was the case in Ireland.

I agree that many of these voyages must have been uncertain, but they were renowned throughout Europe and Asia for their ability to navigate uncharted waters. For centuries their very survival depended on it.

and the voyage to North America would not be as difficult for a crew of Vikings as you think. They would island hop, and could count on supplies and refuge at the western fringe settlements they had founded.

from Norway or Denmark -> the British Isles -> Iceland -> Greeenland -> on to Lanse Aux Meadows in Newfoundland

I'm sure they did pray to the gods before they set out on any journey, cuz the Atlantic is rough, but I think the faith they had was in their own proven skills.

St Brendan the Navigator was an Irish monk who is thought to have made a similar journey 500 years before. It's possible the land he described was Newfoundland, but that is not proven. Now, the Irish were *not* renowned as seafarers, so, for an Irish monk to set out into the uncharted North Atlantic... *that* would require blind faith =)

You guys just cant dissociate faith and religion, can you... who said faith had to be blind?

What use is a cynic anyways, if not to inspire an optimist to action.

Have you guys seen the boats these guys used? The first navigators and sailors, be they viking, Inuit, or Hawaiian, had courage most of us landlubbers will never have to deploy.
I'm feeling no sleep till tuesda right now..

Oh wow, I think that's precisely it. This is just semantics, right?

For example, if I say: "I have faith in humanity", and I do, I'm basing this on "facts".., Objective observations, at any rate.

We're a resilient species. Bit stupid, but heh, we'll manage.

..
So yeah. Screwhead isn't a full-time raver, but he's as jaded and cynic as a part-time one

Faith in what ? I'd like to know. In decency, in compassion, in principles, in governance, in day to day actions ?

I do have some faith, and it's not the fairy tale coming out of the door bird chirping while picking up my skirt for the puddle of water, but I have much more cynism and I'd really like to know what's making life so bright.

I guess that's the kind of things you learn when you get close to die. You realize how lucky you are to just be alive and you need to enjoy it to the fullest while it lasts. I don't know for the other people, but for me, cynism is NOT what makes me enjoy life. Sure being realistic is essential, but I don't need to turn sour and see the glass half-empty to feel like I am.

Maye things will never get better...maybe the fucking apocolypse is coming and we're all going to die a bloody horrible gory death...but I appreciate and see the positivity in my daily encounters and feed off the love that exists in this world.
I can't sit there everyday thinkiing about how much everything sucks, I look at the good side of things instead and try to better myself and help others by being positive.

I don't know if that makes any sense on paper (aka interwebz) but yeah.

I don't think you should turn a blind eye when people do stupid things, none of that "turn the other cheek" bullshit.
Why not be nice to people though? It's a great motto.
