They are being forced to work certain times by the ruling from the essential service commitee. With the salaries they make I have to assume they are earning more than 200$ a week, they are probally working half shifts.
I'm feeling hungry like the wolf right now..

union dues go into funds that are used during strikes.. striking workers make 75% of their salaries while on strike in this case.. as far as I know.

The stm doesn't save money when they get less fares

Yeah, I get the feeling that they are paid a fixed rate per year, not an hourly wage. Hence the 75% even though only about 33% of services are maintained.

i gotta side with the stcum on this one...

this isn't the 1940's and these guys aren't cole miners suffering from black lung...

most of the teachers and nurses i know with higher educations don't make as much money as the "maintenance workers" who do infact clean the metro's, though there is also some "maintenance workers" who do mechanical repairs to "maintain" effeciency... from what i read the real dirty work is outsourced to other specialists.

as far as i'm concerened these fuckwits have it fuckin' easy in comparison to 90% of the ppl who acctually use the metro services.

when the rest of the non unionized world wants more money they can't just stop working and cry like little bitches until they get it... they gotta get off thier ass and WORK for it.

not to mention... maybe they would be getting paid more if they weren't forkin' over so much money to the damn union in the first place.

the guys at the top of the union ladder are living fatter than anybody, and lets face it... this is quebec... these guys are probaly skimming more cash off the top than all these guys striking are making put together.

all i know is after taxes and union dues these guys arent starving...

and if they want more money nothing is stopping them from going out to look for another job that pays more... and if they can't find one... well welcome to the real world!!!

p.s. i got bit by a dog today skateboarding to work!!!
I'm feeling warm unicorn jizz right now..

...that and the fact that any increase they do get is likely to be passed on to the general public as another fare increase...

databoy, so if i follow you, EVERYONE should go on strike because nobody has payrise of that amount, right?

the price of life is getting higher and higher, but our salary doesnt, why should them do?

^ I'm not so sure how well that's gonna work out...

On another note, The only reason these guys are striking is because they work in a publicly owned company. THe SAQ, STM... the only reason they can pull this off is because we rely on them. People aren't going to stop taking the metros because of the strike. Same thing with gas prices... there so high because of our dependence on it. People would probably still fill up, even if the prices went up to 150 cents a liter.

Bring in the Scabs Esti.
I'm feeling nice :) right now..

Not that I wouldn't LOVE to live in the old port, but do you know the price of appartments (if you can find anything else than a loft or penthouse in the first place) around here ? :)

Strangely enough, I prefer to party up a bit, and rely on a STM that SHOULD be doing his job, than to live only to pay a rent.
I'm feeling kinky right now..

Walk 20/30 min. from the old port, you should be able to find something. You wont have to buy a buss card so thats how much? 80$ less a month (to party up a bit)? The old port is about the most bike frendly aria in Montreal. Or you can buy a 6 pack and wait for the buss...it all comes down to personal choice.

thats retarded. i live on the plateau, and i work in laval. I'm not gonna move to laval which is a place i love to work but would hate to live in. like baamuth said, stm should be doing there job which is getting me to my work for 103$ a month. I'm paying for a service. I'm soon buying a car so it isnt a big issue for me, but telling someone to move next to their work/school is not a nice idea for most cases. Imagine you work in the industrial parts of montreal, would you want to live there?

also:

from [ radio-canada.ca ]

Salaire annuel des employés d'entretien

Minimum - 42 972 $
Maximum - 54 870 $
La majorité des salariés touchent 53 435 $, selon le syndicat

Thats just way too much. If i were the STM, i'd drop the salaries by at least 10% instead of going for a 5 year 2% raise (exept the first year).

Even when they work, the metro is damn dirty and they do a half-assed job.
