indeed.

i guess the unsaid question here is - how eithical is it of the parents to even keep here alive like this? what kind of life is she going to have, and for how long?

did the parents do the right thing by preserving life, in any shape or form?
did they do it BECAUSE they wanted to preserve life? or for reasons far more selfish?

...

Ok that video really got me...what do you expect the parents to do? They didn't know ahead of time. They can't kill her!!!

She seems happy for now, she's lovely actually. There's a girl at my school with a similar (but less bad) defect. She's blind (because of her condition) but seems happy.

What would you do Ze'ev? You can't just kill her. Law doesn't allow.

i cant speak for anyone else since it's a highly sensitive issue, but is this *major knocks on wood* ever happened to me, i'd definitely choose euthanasia. better this than a life of suffering.

how much hope does she have of ever living a normal life?

if its just one defect... or a few that can be dealt with.. but you've seen the video.

i guess its a thin line, but it has to be drawn somewhere.

^- I've edited my reply..

There must be doctors and clinics out there that can probably justify this medically. There has to be a way.

I agree with you but as a parent you can't kill her, as a sensibilized human being, you can't take life away from her because of that. She has the right to live...

A life of perpetual suffering or no life?

I'd chose no life, and thats the least I could do for my kid.

In Russia, where I'm from, kids like this were put to sleep immediately after birth, and it wasnt even a question. I've just asked my parents about this and my dad's father and sister are doctors.

I don't think so...doctors will tell you surgery is the key...what did it say? 20 operations so far...that's crazy! She's only 20 months old!

Exactly.

Cases get judged on how bad they are, and if the prospects are obviously dim, decision is made on the spot.

Interesting...must be hard to do so as a parent though

Then that means the parents are being selfish...

Mind you, I'm not sure I would agree that easily to kill my kid!

I think I would try to deal with the cards I've been deal. If that implies to euthanize (spelling?) my kid...well...though one! O_o

Thats what I meant about being selfish. I can imagine it must hurt extremely, especially if you are the mother who carried and nourished the baby. But I do believe what I've said above.

Small consolation can be found in the fact that modern science most of the time allows to detect cases like this in earlier stages of the pregnancy, and then abortion is probably even more of a humane choice. It also shortens the labor span having to be endured by the mother.

so just because she's unattractive she can't lead a happy life?

ian seems to be doing just fine....

but on a more serious note, i bet it wouldn't be so much of an issue if she were a he... meaning a woman shouldn't be "put through life" being disfigured because she has no worth and will never be happy.

bon point de soulevé par cherryonionkiss. If 'it' were to be a guy, would the pressure of 'looking fine' be that heavy? Doubt it

Its not just being UGLY! And its not even just looks, she's disfigured, she will never look normal, have you considered the world view from INSIDE of that face?

Also, there's functionality to cosnider. Have you see the video? She's eating through her STOMACHE and breathing througha STRAW! How much do you think can they fix THAT? It's constantly being supported by machinery and other people, always undergoing painful surgeries, and most likely and early and painful slow death.

And you turn this into a LOOKS issue???

If she was male, or even an ANIMAL it would still be the same goddamn thing.
