They try to make it so user-friendly, but there's so many bugs and problems that you really need years of experience to deal with your computer normally. New windows user must shit in their pants when they see their first blue screen (win98 ) or remote procedure call (xp) forcing a reboot within 60 seconds. you can't just say that this kind of shit is normal, so you pay hundreds of bucks for a guy who knows his shit a bit, and the guy will run windows update for you. if that's user-friendly = ...

People who aren't willing to take the time to maintain their machine don't deserve to have one to begin with. Updating windows is about as easy as filling your car up with gas. Do you need lessons on how to fill your car with gas when you buy a new car? If so, why are you even near the wheel...

Too many people have computers, but for no "real" reason. They don't DO anything with it other than go on the internet and chat. They don't have a REASON to use the computer, like video/photo/sound editing, they just want to play games and chat, and they see a very powerful tool as just a toy.

I think that there should be some kind of law instated that requires EVERYONE to have a license to purchase a computer and an internet connection. That way, when a virus/worm/whatever spreads, not only would the virus writers be held accountable, but so would all the fucking idiots who didn't update windows.

Windows updates solve a LOT of problems for windows. Not all, but lots. SP2 is a big step in the right direction. The new windows firewall works similar to Zone Alarm (as opposed to just blocking ports like the old one), it does automatic windows updating, and it even monitors your anti-virus software to make sure that it's running properly and up to date. And that's not even getting into the code changes they've done, though how well THAT works is still to be seen...

Not only does Mac OS X cost 179$ (even though it's largely based on free unix code), but they charge money for very minor updates... At least with windows you know you will only have the pay for the OS every few years... Granted it's better than windows when it comes to stabality (thanks to the unix code and the benefits of apple's closed-hardware system, the OS only runs on very specific hardware so they can optimize it more; the other benefit of closed-hardware is you can charge outrageous prices for your computers!).

ourageous prices?

minor updates?

just because they cram 2 years work and massive updates into a 0.1 increase in their candidate by no means makes it a minor release..

you make these brash judgements of the system simply because you never use OS X.. i have a mac, i use 10.3 and i can tell you with each 0.1 increase, OS X is jumping leaps and bounds ahead of XP.. 10.4 is going to be the greatest OS in the world hands down.

and outrageous prices... well, sorry but a Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 for $2,799.00 CND is not outrageous.

or better yet, the fastest cpu they have, Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 for $4,199.00 CND..

find the PC equiv of that system and check it's price. you'll find it's actually MORE expensive, and those comps wont come standard with gigabit ethernet and firewire.
