just because I eat meat doesnt mean I don't give a shit

this spring I'm going to learn bio-dynamic farming (eat what I grow without harming the natural environment) and contribute to self-sustainable communities across Canada... [ www.wwoofing.ca ]

Summer 2007 I volunteered on an organic farm in Ireland, and worked with a self-sustainable arts collective in Spain... learning about heritage seed saving, plant and herb growing/partnering, eco-conscious building, and how to live happily with very little money.

Last summer I tried container gardening here in the city. Did extensive research and built my own "earth box" containers... but it didn't work out so well. I got a few zucchini and onions out, then everything got some weird mold/fungus and died.

This summer I'm hoping to work with cows/chickens (Alberta)... and on a medicinal herb farm (BC)... yes, that means I'm going to miss all the summer parties, but my wwoofing experiences were far more life enriching.

it's admirable that people want to eliminate harm to animals or on the environment... but instead of choosing not to eat meat I'm hoping to learn some new skills and find a different way of life. contribute to change. I don't think anyone can be free of guilt with so much contributing to the damage done to people, animals, and our environment. I am fully aware of the impact my existence has and at least want to do something about it. Being vegan just isn't how I choose to do it.

Stuff White People Like #32 Vegan/Vegetarianism:

"

As with many white people activities, being vegan/vegetarian enables them to feel as though they are helping the environment AND it gives them a sweet way to feel superior to others. For further evidence, note how the vegetarian world has increasing levels of extemism (no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, nothing that has been cooked, etc).

Much like not watching TV, this makes white people pretty hard to deal with on a day to day basis - having dinner, going to restaurants, having them over to watch political debates all become major challenges as they will talk about how they cannot eat anything and would rather that the meat and cheese be thrown in the garbage than put into their bodies.

But wait, aren’t there white people who eat organic, grain fed, free range cattle and chicken? Yes, these white people are wracked with guilt knowing that they are eating a dead animal, contributing to rainforest deforestation, and global warming.

Whether you are dealing with a meat eater or a vegan/vegetarian, there are many ways to use this information to your advantage.

If you require a favor from a vegetarian white person, you should invite them to a dinner with your family. When your mother/grandmother offers them a dish with meat in it, they will reject it saying that they are vegetarian. When the meal is over, tell them that your mom is very embarrassed, and that in your culture rejecting food is the equivalent of spitting on someone’s grave. They will then owe you favor, this can be repeated when you need trips to the airport, someone to help you move, a small interest free loan, or a place for your friend to crash.

If you need to gain leverage with a meat eater, it’s pretty easy. They already feel guilty, just point it out.

I would bring bacon and sausages so it was totally obvious to everyone what was in it... me and the dogs would enjoy them.

amen brother - let the rabbits wear glasses!

I went to a dinner party on Friday... I spent $40 to make the best corn muffins you've ever seen: buttermilk, butter, eggs, maple bacon (carefully crisped and crumbled), shredded old cheddar cheese, chopped green onions, two kinds of cornmeal, red peppers, and topped with a sliver of sundried tomatoe... and OH MAN they were fucking good.

so anyhow I get to the party and put them on the table (next to the bowl of Ruffles chips, and tubs of packaged hummus and dip?). Knowing there might be some false assumptions that I would only bring a vegetarian food to any shared meal announced that there was bacon in there... there was some disappointment. mostly from one girl (a good friend of mine) but she grabs one anyhow and proceeds to PICK THE BACON OUT and put it on the table and eventually feed it to the dogs.

ok... I'm trying to understand this

buttermilk
eggs
butter
cornmeal
cheese

all totally ok, even tho they've been cooked with bacon,
but bacon should be picked out and fed to the dogs?

I'm all for conscious consumerism and making good healthy choices... sure. great.
but this is insanity, isn't it? I just dont even want to bother drilling it down... it seems so obvious to me.

I'm never going to be a vegan. I like vegan food, I like vegetarian food.. no problem. I dont have to eat meat. I can go without it... it's actually not that often that I buy it anymore. but I've got this problem with delusional purists, disrespecting FOOD, and making other people feel guilty.

next dinner party I go to I'm bringing a pound of bacon wrapped sausages.

recession-ism is the new terrorism... except instead of just the USA on Orange alert, they've put the whole world into a state of emergency. and good for that... the system is going down. it needed to change. independent sustainable economies create stronger communities and countries. supply peaked above the demand because of too many greedy bastards... to hell with "free" trade. we can all do with a few less American Apparel shops. there's going to be major changes yet... hopefully a complete redesign of our lifestyles. buy and eat locally produced food and products. work where you live. there's already a lot of people who figured this out. for the rest, it's gonna hurt a little... but it IS a very good thing. it was only a matter of time before a defective machine broke down.

"therefore the underground is a product of society."

absolutely.

and right now people are possibly the most apathetic, hopeless, depressed, lazy, bunch of selfish cunts as we've ever been. why would anyone want to possibly upset anyone or rock the bubble? wasting all our energy convincing ourselves everything is ok. taking very little risks. not trusting anyone... don't risk your expensive gear... don't throw a "bad" party... don't make "bad" music...

I remember when Venetian Snares was at the Elmo in Toronto a few years back and it was totally sold out and crowded at the start of the show... half way through his set I turned around and noticed half the room had left. They came cuz they knew the name or for good promotion, but then left when they heard what he plays. maybe he was in a bad mood, or maybe he did it on purpose... it was pretty brutal. rocked my socks. but the reviews were not all good, but those who loved it defended it with teeth.

there is still a good breakcore scene in Toronto... some of the most brilliant music I've ever heard. I'm not sure if it's underground or not... whatever. anyhow good news is Toronto's best promoter of "bad" music just moved to Montreal. ;)

great discussion, very polite for one of those topics that always seems to create an unresolved argument

good interview too... tho the tone is kinda annoying.

"To me, there's no star in the underground, stardom opposes to underground. In the underground the link between the artist and its public is stronger, I think. As basdini said it's also the whole DIY attitude that makes ungerground underground..."

hellz yeh

for me... underground rave music and parties are those created without the objective of mass consumption or profit... experimental sounds/styles/events and supporting friends/artists who create them.

is it over?

I don't think so, but there are a lot more people reproducing the same ideas than there are those coming up with new ones.

also...

IMO this woman Cozy in the interview hits it right on... the lack of purity, or even complete inability to totally "drop out" of mainstream lifestyle/culture, and the friction between conflicting or opposing actions and ideals within both individuals and groups has been for me the biggest issue I've experienced in the freetekno scene - which became my chosen title "dissonance".

this internal conflict brings the word hypocrite around quite often in these discussions and debates. it's apparently impossible for anyone to be a purist about anything anti-capitalist/DIY/anti-corporate/anti-establishment living in the society we do. stuff costs money. we are saturated with wants/needs/ideas that fight against collaborative anti-profit efforts. and the political motivations are nearly completely beaten to death from every angle or most have generally given up and politics became just casual hobby discussions or a 5 letter word (aka "drama"). not many people are into working through the complications of interpersonal dynamics for a common goal and have just giving up and rather avoid it because really there's more frustration trying to create an alternative, than there is going with the flow of mainstream. IF they havent also given up their art/experiments, they have chosen to work in small closed groups.

it's not over, it's changed. and the definition will always change too. people continue to surprise me with totally amazing shit and I doubt they will stop - or not just "the underground" is doomed, but humanity as a whole.

quote from the interview "you only understand if you are physically there... it cannot be substituted..."

indeed

sorry I'm a little late on this topic... but...

no doubt you guys had all the best intentions but what offended me most about this party, still does, is that you guys went to a free party and then thought *hey we can do better!* and decided to throw a "good party" there a week later. then you thought bringing toilets, a food station, stocked bar, seating, the biggest sound system you could rent, and expensive lazer/lights was a great idea and would make it a much better party. totally wrong.

nevermind the huge risk bringing attention to your stupid ass hauling all that shit in and out of an illegal venue. you are lucky you didnt have all your shit confiscated and walk out of there with fines and criminal records for everyone! as for the good intentions...

with 5 years throwing free parties in illegal venues (in Toronto) I can tell you that what makes a really good party is not how much it cost to throw it. sure it's often ghetto, but even 200 people in a snow storm in mid December with the roof collapsing on top of us and 2 hours from the nearest metro people didnt complain about shit and came back for more. when people dont pay for anything, and you give them a unique adventure, they're just happy to be there.

community builds from communication, networking resources, and cooperation. people always want to help, and our costs were always covered just by selling water and beer (ok, sometimes acid). if you want clean washrooms and hotdogs go to a fucking club and pay your $10 and shut the hell up. You either cater to lazy stupid people, or you do it yourself with what you can find and end up with a much better party. it's not easy, but seriously it's not that hard either, if 10 of your friends want to party in some mad location, you each pitch 10$ for CDJs and gas, then invite all your friends. you're only out 100$ that you'd spend going to a lame club anyhow so nobody loses anything. if you dont think it's cool enough, don't bother. /freeteknorant

you're really not going to make any friends trying to show-up the underground scene.
