Right so I agree with deadfunk, only I felt your whole higher end (leads and percussion) needed a lot more presence.

Also I felt it was a little muddy in the 200 - 600 hz range so I boosted that a little too.

But now that it's all nice and loud, fucking nice track.

Look the party was awesome, and despite having to find a new venue and other problems you guys still managed to put together a pretty sick event. You guys just honestly just got unlucky.

I can think of so many reasons people may not have come that were outside of your control: The cold, emergency Easter brunches the next day with family, lack of funds due to lost jobs, the change of venue, other parties the same night, many parties these past couple of weeks, finals/essays at school ect. ect.

Awesome party. Props to Vinny and N.A. I really enjoyed the sound in the Psytrance room. Really had an old school vibe, I liked it.

I'm using the AKG K240 Studio series headphones now for late night production. Honestly it really doesn't matter what your using. It's all about learning your monitors and their strengths and weaknesses.

Listen to your music on as many different sources as possible, and then compare it to something you think always sounds really good. Many "shity" speakers have shown me huge mistakes in my mix. Like my 2000$ Mackie monitors are awesome, but their so good that they won't distort if a track is clipping. Play your mix threw a shit speaker and voila distortion everywhere.

No monitor is going to make your mixing better until you know how to use it. You have to learn your monitor and learn your room too.

BTW you should NEVER do your whole mix in headphones alone. It seems every pro article I've read has stressed that point. Headphones just can't recreate sound the way speakers can. They really mess up your panning apparently.

I'm using the Mackie HR824s. Very solid monitors, only thing is that the mids are a tiny bit aggressive and that the stereo image is so large on these that initially they can make you think your song has great stereo depth when it doesn't. But aside from that they were my favorite monitors.

My advice to you would be to go down to italmelodie or someplace with a cd you know extremely well and listen to it on all the different speakers. Find the ones that speak to you. When you play a song you know well and hear something in it you never picked up before, that's a good sign.

Hey mike first thing that strikes me is that I think what's wrong with your first bass is that your trying to use a non psytrance type bass sound, in a psy way. I mean it sounds like the bass is changing on 16th notes with a lot of lag? ((I can't remember what it's called when a note instead of changing right away moves threw the scale before hand, i think it's like legato with a lot of bend, but I'm talking straight out of my ass now))

Secondly it really sounds to me that your like over eq-ing your music now. The bass sounds like it's cut at 40-50 hz, and your leads seem to be missing a little like lower end saturation that really tends to make them sound powerful. Like it sounds like they are being cut at about 400-500 hz... which works if your bass takes up that space, but your bass seems to be missing power in that region too.

I've started cutting my bass up into two sections now, like one for the low end and one for the higher end stuff. Try adding another sound in sync with your original bass to make up that low mid end maybe.

At the same time I think your percussions take up too much of the high end too.

Sometimes the best eq is no eq.

Well my main beef with Tiesto is that he in a sense codified the trance structure. It's like every single one of his songs follow the same Breakdown-Build-Anthem structure. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's cool. I think we all need that breakdown or anthem somewhere in a set, but it really gets on my nerves when every single track is exactly the same.

Anyways I don't think he's the only artist who's ever done this. I can think of so many others who found some magic "formula" then decided to make every single song like that one. I think what happens is that artists get lazy and stop exploring new sounds or different textures cuz bottom line is that it takes a lot more work and people won't always understand your work. SO hey that last song worked, let's just change the leads around a bit, move the break 1 minute forward add an intro and bam new hit.

It's like finding out that the best part of your cereal you eat in the morning is the sugar, then taking a bowl of straight up sugar and eating that every morning instead. I think this dude Ishkur wrote that on his site once when criticizing edm.

Anyways I don't blame tiesto... I blame the masses who are too lazy and stupid too develop their own musical tastes, and would rather hear the same thing regurgitated over and over again because they think it makes them cool.

Like I thought my mixer was completely finished right? Like 2 days after the fire I flipped it upside down and there was still water dripping out. A couple of days ago I decided to plug it in for the heck of it, and the fucking thing powered up. All the effects seems to be loading up properly and the parameters all responded fine. I haven't plugged anything through it yet to see how the sound passes but there might be hope. Granted I'd have to replace all the knobs and sliders cuz there melted.

But yo we should get together to chill sometime soon, its been a while.

Hey melo, I never accused you of using it. And I agree a shitty dj is a shitty dj. If you need to see your bpm, you shouldn't be playing in front of people no matter what the medium is.

It's probably like using vsts vs. hardware synths. I know there's a million good reasons to use vsts but I just plain old prefer hardware.
