+1000 point for this guy

you wanna protest, then you are going to need to articulate some of this class agnst into a program of demands.

start with: 1% sales tax on all securities

make the 1% pay 1%.

If you are fundumentally socialist, then then you believe that in a perfect world, taxes would redistrbute income st the top 1% gets 1% of the income, and so does the bottom 1% get 1% of the income. That obviously doesn`t work because it removes too many incentives. Most of us probably would call system un-fair.

So two question emerge:

First, what should the income shares of different population segments be? For example, how much does the top 1% deserve to take home? 10%? 5%? 2%?

And second, how should those population segments be divided? For example, one might suggest that teachers deserve to be in the top 5% and university professors and researchers in the top 2%.

If you look at the historical stats on the first question, and take shares back to where they were in the 1970, you shouldnt be targeting the top 1%, but the top 0.1% (one in every thousand). In Canada, thats those making over 1.7 million per year. Those between 0.1%-5% woul see their shares stay constant. While everyone below 5%, ie 19 out of 20 people, would see their shares increase.

Defining common values and goals is precisely the aim of this movement. This is not merely about protesting, this is about building a new world through actual direct democracy. This new world may be the same as currently with only a few modified laws about economics and consumption, or a totally new system; no one can know for now, this is only the beginning of a global discussion, and now is the time to have your say in it by getting involved.

There are different ways to get involved: get your ass there and strengthen the occupation, help organizing the camp, help organizing the committees, just participate in committee meetings (education in economics, philosophy & politics, claims, actions, etc.), use the website [ occupymontreal.tk ] and the forum [ automnequebecois.com ] , etc.

I set up a committee for screening documentaries, there's now a growing and open team of 10 people managing it: one documentary projected every Saturdays and Sundays at 7pm followed by a discussion with the director. This begun yesterday with the great documentary L'Argent (Money) by Isaac Isitan, with 300 people and still a hundred after almost one hour of discussion in the end. I believe in educating ourselves before claiming and asking for anything specific.

This is the People's movement. Don't wait for an order or approval, take initiative, talk to people, share your opinions and learn from the others. Now is the best time.

I thought the message was clear enough: Hey giant financial institutions, stop fucking around with our cash!

Here's some food for thought, a chart of bank mergers since 1990 :

This is only a part of the tip of the iceberg... a message simple enough for most people to understand, affecting people from left-wing to right-wing, poor or (moderately) rich.

Knowing that, what should we do? Shout out this message to traders and bankers? Kill everybody with a tie on?

The problem is that there are no specific people to blame in order to solve the problem; the system encouraged a few 1% to become what they are and to do what they did; However, if we remove them then others will take their place.

Then, the real discussion has to take place in order to better understand the underlying problems, define common values, and come up with solutions to these problems according to our values.

In NYC they are one month ahead of us, and they already begun to agree on claims and, soon, propositions of actions (probably starting as demands, for now).

very good flo

let's keep on fighting guys this is only the beginning, we may need to fold up camps for the winter in the north east, it's getting cold, but anywhere they can reasonably keep it going through the winter they will (california) then in the spring we will come back with a vengeance...

the spring offensive is on, my brothers and sisters!

stay frosty, stay cool and stay focused on what we came to do,

smash the power of wallsteet.

Winter won't be a problem in Montreal :)
Heated tents have already been planned, and anyways, the movement is not necessarily depending on the place since we're trying to keep structures on the internet as much as possible, with no leaders and no single person upon whom we depend (this is difficult to set up but it ends up working as an autonomous democratic structure).

The only thing is that all of this depends only on people's dedication, initiative, involvement, time, effort, motivation, etc.; in other cities this has died off over a week ago, but in here it is still growing and strengthening.

It also depends on what the police/city officials are going to let them get away with. From what I'd read, Bloomberg has said that they have to leave where they are in NY today or the cops are sweeping in. I don't remember if it was 7am or 7pm, but they've been given a deadline
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

well things seems to work good a few days ago they voted and went on harlem to support another union protest..

here in the winter it's lil less cold than in mtl but tents are removed from the square and aren't allowed so it will be a problem..

we are very busy these days we don't have the time to go there a lot but we support the movement with money and i think everybody who have money should do the same in their own territory.

my mother is visiting from mtl.. she's a militant since forever (she made a career out of it..ha!) and is talking about going down there so i'll have more news soon ;)

i'm on a 10 years green card now and in the process of becoming a us citizen so sadly i cannot do as much as i would like. i need to stay "quiet". for the moment hehe.

ps: Gaddafi is dead! i'm really disgusted about how things went down btw. when you read the history of this nation and its ties with major power of western world.wow. things could have been different!

ps2: THE SYSTEM NEED TO BE CHANGED ALMOST ENTIRELY. AS LONG AS THERE IS INHERENCY WE WILL GO FUCKING NOWHERE! EVERYBODY SHOULD THINK ABOUT THAT OR REMEMBER THEIR SOCIO/POL.SC./PHILO CLASSES WHEN THINKING OR FORMULATING A PLAN:

Inherency is a stock issue in policy debate that refers to a barrier that keeps a harm from being solved in the status quo.

There are three main types of inherency:

Structural inherency:

Laws or other barriers to the implementation of the plan. An example of this would be a plan under which the United States federal government imposes unilateral tariffs and quotas to prevent international trade. This plan is inherent because it goes against current World Trade Organization laws.

Attitudinal inherency:

Beliefs or attitudes which prevent the implementation of the plan. An example of this would be a plan under which the United States federal government eliminates all immigration laws concerning Mexico. This plan is inherent because the general attitude of Americans is that such increases in immigration would increase unemployment.

Existential inherency:

Perhaps the strangest of the three, this claims that the plan won't be implemented simply because there is no reason it would be. An example of this would be a plan under which the United States federal government makes playing the board game Monopoly illegal. It may be possible to prove this plan to be a good idea; however, it is inherent and won't happen simply because it hasn't and probably won't.

ps3: sorry for long post. so if you have a smart ass comment like "tl;dr" it's alright.. i know already... heh.

Regarding the CNN link...
I got a friend who lives in the neighborhood where this happened, and apparently these protesters that got gassed aren't protesters at all...
It's a group of Berkley anarchists who have been using the protest as an excuse to beat and rob ppl, so the city was forced to shut down the occupation a few days ago to avoid further violence, ppl just wouldn't leave...
Messed up.
I'm feeling republican right now..
