760$ for one of the top hardcore engineers in the world, on tour from Australia, is hardly alot of money. In fact, it's pretty damn cheap.

Normally you'd pay 1000$ for the headliner's ticket from the UK, then 2000$ for his booking fee for the weekend (which you can usually cut in half with a tour if you're lucky), then hotels and all that.
So normally it's 2200$ minimum, if not 3200$.

If there was an agreed upon amount then that is what should be paid.
Dj's should NOT have to chase someone around to be paid.

Plain and simple if you can't afford to pay a headliner then you shouldnt have one.

That's another point I was going to make. If you make an agreement you should stand by it. Don't say you're gonna pay 1000$ and think you'll get by with 500$.

Headliners like Orbit1 aren't like local DJs that think of this as a hobby. DJing is their livelihood. If they don't get paid they don't have money to live. That's not really that funny.

I can't believe you guys think you're doing your scene a favour by supporting promoters that don't stand by their promises! It's people like that that give Canada such a bad reputation. You'd be surprised how many UK headliners I've booked that have told me horror stories. Many headliners I've tried to book have flat out said no because they've had bad experiences before (thank God for my good reputation).

Lol this would have all been avoided if a deposit was payed up front and contracts were signed. So who's fault is it rly? Sickness and cya? Or the artist for not taking charge of their booking? It starts at the root, they made a choice and took the chance dealing with someone they knew might not fully come through for them. We get the point, now we wanna talk about some of the good parts, like the locals and their massive sets, is that a possibility please?

Are you saying that if no contract is signed then the agreement is invalid? Verbal agreements hold up in court - and if they really wanted to, they could easily sue Sickness for the money. I doubt they would, but either way...

No wonder Montreal DJs always ask me for contracts (which most would consider useless when you're playing for less than 1000$) when I book them.

And what kind of questions is that? Of course it's the promoter's fault if he doesn't pay the headliner he booked! Who's fault do you want it to be?!

Ridiculous.

Oh and, when a party doesn't get packed or the promoter doesn't have enough money that's NEVER the headliner's fault. It's always the promoter. If you are throwing an event, you should know what kind of numbers you can expect for a class A/B/C headliner. From what I gather, this party didn't even have flyers the week before the event - no fucking wonder the turnout was lower than expected.

You can't sit on your ass promotion-wise and expect people to show up because you booked a big name. You've gotta work for it.

Let's get one thing straight now. The promoter was saved nearly $2000, not paying us 2000. He wasn't paying us near that.

Verbal agreements barley ever hold up in court. Especially when there is no contact. I don't think people from other countries are allowed to make money in Canada unless they have a work permit. Anyways, as I said before I hope everything works out for everyone. As people said before none of us know the whole story.

It's ok, in most minds here, promoters still suppose to take their own reponsabilities

I hope DJs, does'nt think Montréal peoples are all cheap because of those misstakes

Verbal contracts hold up in court sure man, wtv you say. Did the promoters contact an immigration officer about him playing ( working ) in canada? Did they have his permit to play here? Cause it seems to me they only travel with cd booklets, so its easy to pass as a visitor. If you didn't have any of these things locked down in the first place, wtf are you talking about verbal contracts for? They didn't even have permission to play a gig here in the first place! When you bring international artists into the country for WORK you need to notify customs. You know this.
Self fulfilling prophecy.
Sign contracts or go home with your mascara running down your cheeks.

Also last minute tag alongs from T.O. always leave unhappy, not the first time we've seen something like this.

Host, you're a kool guy but I think you're pushing it way too far here and coming across as a total jerk giving the whole scene a bad rep.

A ticket to a rave doesn't constitue a contract, and most events are held illegally as well. You and I would still get pretty much pissed off if a promoter just bailed without delivering what was expected of him, I wouldn't call it a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'd be fucking pissed. Hopefully it never happened to me, although I know it did happen in the scene previously.

Try to get some perspective here. We can't defend every screw-ups by bitching at others and telling them to pack up and go fuck themselves because they have "right to complain/we're doing them a favor in the first place/we had good intentions/whatever".

Obviously no one knows the whole story and I truly hope things will be fixed ASAP. I'm sorry that such a thing happened at an otherwise amazing party and hope JS and Cya have already stepped up the plate in private and are working things out with both Orbit and Milo.

Telling them that "you had no contract and no work permit, you can't bitch we fucked you over" is just plain wrong and stupid in so many ways. Clearly wrong has been done, I don't think for one minute that any of those two guys had any bad intentions or were trying to rip anyone off.

As for JS and Cya, I would like to believe they will try to correct everything ASAP. JS's history as a promoter has always been flawed, and it seems to be just another blow to his rep. Cya to my knowledge has never thrown a party before.

I'm not 100% in the know on this one but would like to believe that shit happened and none of them knew how to react properly, panicked, and that's why everything is such a mess right now.

Anyways. Had a blast last week-end, all of the DJs rocked, the crowd was great, and B-Bear is still hungover from the beers and cigs people kept giving him.
