Glad the party was fun. Too bad it's another blackmark on Sickness' already splotchy record. Do artists no longer researchthe promoters they are working for? A large part of this drama could have been avoided had that been the case

Hi.

I've managed to abstain posting in this thread because I wanted to see where it would go.

To clear up any confusion here's what happened to us on the night of the party.

* We were delayed crossing the border (not anyone's fault really)
* We got to the hotel specified to us by the promoter only to find there was no reservation for us
* We waited an hour for the promoter to come to the hotel and then another hour for them to try and find another hotel for us
* We didn't actually manage to unpack and get some rest before the show until 1 am (2hrs before my set)
* We got paid half of what we agreed.
* The promoter wanted us to pay for the hotel

I'm sorry, but that's unacceptable. I saved the promoter close to $2000 by managing to fly myself out rather than them paying for the airfare. And working with Milo and many other promoters in North America we managed to put together a tour. Considering that alone, everything else should have been sorted. Milo has every right to kick up a stink because considering the numbers game and our combined booking fee, it still totals to *less* than what it would have if the promoter had flown only me out and paid me my booking fee. Surely they could have done that, but no.

The problem was that the promoter kept on promising that we would be paid in full, and delaying it and delaying it. First it was after my set, then after Milo's set, then they said 9am then after we checked out of hotel. After all this, they stopped picking up the phone and sent us a lovely message to "get out of Montreal".

I'm sure everyone would agree that is completely unacceptable to treat any of their artists, let alone an international who has done *them* a favour by saving them huge flight expenses.

Great party, crappy promoters.

hmm.. that does sound like a shitty experience..

thing is, sometimes (if not most of the time) promoters have to rely on the door fee in order to pay their artists. when the turn out is a little lower than expected, things get real fucked up. 'raves' are still very underground here in montreal, despite the size of the city, and it's supposedly kick ass nightlife. so, resources are limited; promoters do it for passion and have no real collateral.
(obviously ppl shouldn't be inviting DJs they can't afford, but, meh.. )

it's very unfortunate, and that has led to some fucked up circumstances over the years. in the foreground, parties are usually wicked, but in the background, things get shady. i have a feeling that that's a global thing though..

i also know that JS could have asked for more help from some of us if he needed it. and also, as i said before, the venue owners dicked 'em out of alot of cash, that was probably intended for the DJs.
that's not a very good excuse, but it explains things a bit.

--> Milo, you're from NYC? i don't know who you know over there, but i suggest that you ask the ppl from the hardcore scene, who have been up here the most often, like Lenny Dee, who they would recommend, or not recommend, doing business with in MTL (and eastern canada) in the future.

again, montreal promoters are poor, we do what we can with what we have. sometimes it's a success, sometimes it's a failure, sometimes we meet in the middle.

... and now that Milo and Orbit1 have profiles on [ rave.ca ] they have no choice but to come participate in the stupid discussions, memes, and drama :p - j/k - lol

all is well that ends well .. fuck i hope this ends well .. ;)
I'm feeling you up right now..

I was wondering the same. I've booked cats from nz,it was nowhere near as much and I payed the entire tour's round trip. No flight share, and I was happy to do it ( all in advance mind you ) but even then, 2000$ who the fuck do you think you are? Making a promoter pay that much for an underground rave? That's retarded. Book your gigs accordingly, you aren't tiesto. Make fair prices for ppl and you won't put yourself in these ridiculous situations. Oh yeah and sign contracts. You giant babies.

Personally I'd never pay 2000$ to book someone. The most I ever paid for someone was Anabolic Frolic (who was really popular at the time) and that was 1000$ (or 800$ I forget) plus a 200$ plane ticket. It was really expensive and I never did that again but everyone who was told they would be paid was. I don't know many people who are worth 2000$ for an hour of work.

But one thing is sure. If you want to charge that amount of money, I'd suggest getting half of it in advance with the plane ticket funds. At least get what you are comfortable with before anything happens or leaving where you are coming from. That way even if you don't get anything else you are satisfied.

At minimum wage (8$/hour) that 2000$ would be about 6.25 weeks or 1.5 months worth of work without saving a penny, buying food or paying rent.

With 760$ I don't think you guys lost any money really but the point of touring is to make as much as possible in every stop. I'm sure if 500 people came to see you the situation would be different. Hope you do work things out.

it doesn't take rocket-science to do a few calculations !!!

- Flight from Australia to New York : 1200$ (now, flight-share, 600$ and the flight is CHEAP)
- Gaz from NY to Montreal, lets say, in a Honda Civic (7.5L/100 KM): Distance "532.88KM" : Price of GAZ, lets say 0.85 cents per litre ( {7.5 x 0.85)= 8.8 x 5.32 = 46$ for GAZ
- Hotel @ Crappy holiday inn with two double beds = 110$
- extra cash for food, drinks and time spent in montreal ::: lets say, 50$'s each = 100$

lets add it up :

600$ + 46$ + 110$ + 100$ = 856$'s
price paid to Djs = 760$ ??

_______________

TOTAL : -96$'s

NOTE: numbers are based on nothing and were used to give an example !!
