he was very liberal when he was young and became more conservator later on. i don't like or approve the activities of the nra.

i don't think he was racist.

and people liking guns are not making my shitlist .. i consider myself a moderate libertarian so...

..i don't know i think there's more important peeps to hate than a 80 some yo man who just died anyway...

oh! and omega man was the fucking booooommmmb!

My opinion very much differs from fishead and Betty's. The right to bear arms to "defend" yourself is to me but an illusion, a fake sense of security, when all it does is breed fear and insecurity. I honestly despise pro-gun activists like Heston with a passion.

I'm an idealist and I firmly believe that we would be better off living without firearms or any advanced weaponry for that matter. But the world sadly doesn't work that way, there will always be evil people in the world who are obsessed with their own personal gain that a world without weapons is pretty much just that... being idealistic or utopic.

As for what fishead said about Moore, I must agree, Moore doesn't use the most legit ways to get his point across and he seriously needs to change his tactics if he truly wants people to wake up. Because the powers that be will always find out how he got his answers and pretty much squash everything he does by reveling that he did it by being deceitful.

It's not necessarily about defending yourself. In 1776 firearms were used by civilians to liberate the United States from their status as a colony of the Great Britain. Supporting the NRA doesn't necessarily involve owning a gun, it means fundamentally believing in the right to own one if you choose to... it means staunchly defending constitutional rights against changes that would deny the freedoms that were assigned by the founding fathers of the Republic.

Let's make an analogy to the right to vote (and if you get right down to it, exercising one's right to vote can be deemed a violent act on the body politic)... if the state were to restrict the right to vote based on criteria like race, class, wealth - there would be an uproar... but a lot of people seem to support that kind of profiling for the legal purchase of fire-arms...

I wasnt suggesting profiling of who can or cant legally own a firearm, I would rather have no firearms at all, but like I said that's being too idealistic. The reality people were living in 1776 is far from reflecting our own, the right to bear arms is total shit these days. WTF are people fighting for? Why the hell do they feel the need to bear arms? Fear is the answer, fear bred by the government and the media.

DonLouis, I don't think the people fighting for those causes are pro-NRA, that's a completely different issue. The pro-NRA bitches are more often than not supporters of those right-winged nuts who'll do anything for more money. The ones fighting those causes are usually out in the streets marching with no weapons but their combined voices.

I think you've sortof missed the point on what the right to bear arms in the US is about. It's got nothing to do with going to war; the right to bear arms has to do with the right to forcefully defend yourself and your country from anything causing it harm, INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT! In fact, that's what the whole thing was SPECIFICALLY for. If a government, like, say, the Bush administration, comes into power and becomes a mad dictator who abuses everyone's rights and causes the country to become poor and broke, their OWN constitution gives the PEOPLE a right to take their arms, storm the white house, and kill everyone inside for running their country into the ground.

Of course, contradicting that are all the laws put in that make it "illegal" to even TALK about wanting to hurt or kill the president, but if you go all the way back to the final draft of the constitution, the right to bear arms is in it so that you could defend yourself and overthrow a corrupt government (much like the current administration).

1984 (the book) is as apt a reference.

Living in a perpetual state of war to keep the proles in their place, too brainwashed by patriotism and (constantly modified) propaganda to rebel.

I dont think bearing arms these days would protect american citizens from a totalitarian goverment. Supposing such a goverment wouldnt outlaw the weapons in citizen's hands in the first place (creeping into power as it might be doing at this very moment through media manipulation), what chance would ordinary people with firearms have against the military? The goverment could even kill dissedents through chemical and biological means. or whatever... guns wouldnt change a thing. At best it would launch another civil war too bloody to makes things any better.

isnt it clear how more gun crimes and murders occur in states where people are allowed to carry guns?

So yeah, Heston liked guns. He could have gotten his fix by going to a shooting range and rent a gun there whenever he felt like blowing targets away.

i don't think owning a gun is a problem. i think all the crimes that you are talking about are the symptom of other society problems.

i have friends in switzerland who have a gun in their house. there is not a lots of crime around zurich and it's very different than let say.. louisiana
