Rainboo...
I started in the 'rave scene' in the late '90 (Yes count back I was about 11) because I was scared of gangs, Kurt Cobain was dead, and I was too poor to be prep. I got out of it for a few years because I stopped being able to enjoy it without being messed up on something...and it stopped really being fun.
I got back into it in the last few years because, while drugs factor heavily in the culture(scene, whatever)so does a level of 'passive acceptance' That is to say how 'involved' you are is somewhat irrelevant, you will be accepted as far as you want to go. If you are high, fine, if you are not, cool, dance? sure great! no? fine as well.
I'm not saying its true of every single rave in every single city alll the time for everyone, but I like that there is nothing to 'prove' when you rave. No bling,no loyalty assignments,no brand name labels. You can go and dance to the music all night, or meet friends, or chill and take in the sights and sounds. So I go now to get in touch with the Biomass, for the experience... if this makes any sense...
I'm feeling sleepless/balanced right now..

I dunno if all old schoolers like me can attest to this but I left the scene when it became more of a " product " than a gathering of moreless rebellious scenesters.

I started being put off when I started hearing some friends wanting to throw parties because there was " money to be made ". Boy, I'm glad they were proven wrong.
I'm feeling none of your bizness right now..

I left the rave scene when depravity entered... That was **NOT** PLUR...

I came back, the music is sometimes even better now, although I find the sound is often underpowered and the music interrupted MUCH too often for a deep-deep-deep trip... Still fun though. :)
I'm feeling pregnant right now..

Depravity was always part of the parties I used to go to, and debauchery was the whole point in a lot of cases. To deny the connection between drug culture and rave culture is sort of pointless. Every countercultural movement found its nexus in rave culture, and it was common at one point to see full on fetish gear side by side with camo fatigues and candy funfur. A friend of mine told me orgies were far more common throughout the early 90s, and it was equally common for there to be sketchy crimes like knifings, shootings, muggings, rape, all sorts of bad shit, before the advent of harm reduction directed at raves (ie DanceSafe, TRIP, Erowid).

As for drug use, I respect the choice not to do drugs, because I value my sobriety, but getting all in a huff over the cultural significance of the entheogenic side of the somewhat ritualized group peak experience is a little ignorant. It's like Bill Hicks said, if you have a problem with drug users then throw out all your favourite records because the people who made them were rrrrreally fucking high. Yeah yeah yeah, I'm going to get all you straightedgeys getting sand in your vaginas about how I'm not representing your mother's style of party, but yes, people love to do drugs at raves. They always did. It got better in some respects and worse in others.

However ecstasy culture was the reason for '88 (the summer of love, to ravers) being all about love, ketamine was legal all through the 80s into the 90s and was hugely influential across the map, although rarely mentioned in music, heroin started the ambient scene back in Amsterdam (I have to look up the name of the club but this is according to a very well-researched article in Wire UK), acid and psy trance go hand in hand, and I don't want to comment on the influence of crystal meth because I'm sure to open a shitstorm of debate about it, but yes, it was huge in most scenes I knew, and had a lot to do with the general tendency for people to conform to their genre-cliques (ie Jib makes you want to ASSIMILATE). PLUR is a nice idea I guess but done to death. Plus I'm pretty positive it was stolen from hip-hop, believe it or not.

There is a lot of idealism concerning the past, and a lot of people talking about how this or that or the other thing ruined parties. This is sort of a misrepresentation as well. The way I see it, there have always been good parties and bad parties, and a good thing never lasts forever. Usually what ends up dying out is one subculture or another, or people move on, as I have many a time, and find that they don't get the same thrills any more from the way it used to be, or the way it feels now. As Poisoned Candy aptly pointed out, it is common to start to feel like you're not having as much fun as you originally did because of the lack of novelty. I propose that the solution is to make sure your parties are actually going to be fun. Like, provide a lot of entertaining things in an evening, invest in decorations (many of you do decorations I don't even like but hey, it shows effort, soul, integrity if you will), try setting themes, perhaps make the entire party have some whimsical twist to it, throw it in a really different spot, etcetera.

The scene you used to know will always be dead. There is only the now, and the scenes are not more important than the individuals within. That's life. Seasons change, tides ebb and flow, you know, it's just never going to be 96 again.
I'm feeling brake whore right now..

My mother was a biker chick, riding the acid wave, the cocaine binges and so on. She partied a hell of a lot more than I ever will.
I'm feeling delighted right now..

yeah, my parents were both way harder partiers than I could ever imagine. My mother used to model professionaly (along with all the drunken coke-binge parties associated with that) And my dad was fairly hippy-ish and doing a fuck-ton of drugs.
I'm feeling fuckin' crazy right now..
