My review of

Dream Creator 2013 (FDJQ 2013)

I'm saying it right now, this year's Dream Creator Festival wasn't as great as we all expected. The festival had too many barriers to deal with, starting with legal, competition and organization issues. We went from a few thousands of ravers in 2012 to 200 - 300 this year... Anyways, let's talk about this later. The most important point at this edition of Dream Creator: the music.

I'm saying it often and many international DJs across the world agree on the fact that Quebec City has the best scene in the world. Its people, its music and its culture make every event a major happening. As an example, this year we had two 2-hour sets by John 00 Fleming, one on Friday at night and another one on Saturday in the afternoon.

The whole Trance/Psy Room line-up (in order of appearance):

Friday
18:00 - Mind Exposure
20:00 - Will Angers
22:00 - John 00 FLeming
00:00 - JOHN 00 FLEMING versus SEVEN WAYS
00:30 - Seven Ways
02:00 - Symbolium
04:00 - CHURCH (Hommage à Infected Mushroom)

Saturday
14:00 - FloydianChild
15:00 - JOHN OO FLEMING
16:00 - TAO-TAO
18:00 - RECK
19:30 - Dave Nadz & LeBlanc
21:30 - MAGNUS
23:30 - MAGNUS versus SEVEN WAYS
00:00 - D.j. Ross
01:30 - HORIZON
03:00 - Virtual-Light
05:00 - DJeff

Friday - Day 1

I really wanted to arrive in time to hear Will Angers at 8 pm, which is perhaps the Trance DJ who plays the most underground you could hear.
He is the king of Progressive Trance in the province and he proved it once again in a 2-hour set, blending together inspirations from CJ Art, Ovnimoon, Basil O'Glue... giving you an unique take on Progressive Trance.

John 00 Fleming entered the booth at 10 pm. He opened on 2 or 3 Progressive Trance tracks (Airwave) then moved onto more Progressive and darker Techno for some time before going to deeper Progressive Psy-Trance and "turbo'ed"/Full On Psy with Seven Ways after.
At all it wasn't like J00F's set at Montreal in May. We assisted to a demonstration of his real DJ powers, the full John 00 Fleming in his entireness like the one I saw at Quebec City's Black Light 2011, he played without any limits, to a crowd that reads him, this time.
That set goes in the books along Black Light 2011. Thank you J00F.

John 00 Fleming couldn't resist teaming up on the decks with one of his favorite DJs: Seven Ways.
Let me know if I'm wrong, but I think Seven Ways is the first DJ who doesn't produce who had a guest mix on Global Trance Grooves. It simply means Seven Ways is as good as that.
John 00 Fleming versus Seven Ways is another highlight for me. They were able to keep a certain envelop to the music all the time, I never expected the team up to be that successful. In a way you can say they are made for each other. We should have John 00 Fleming versus Seven Ways each time J00F is booked in Montreal or Quebec.
Video of John 00 Fleming versus Seven Ways:

After the versus, Seven Ways took the mix alone, needless to say how perfect it was. It was similar to his set last year at Dream Creator 2012. He's still up to his reputation of best local DJ.
Unfortunately, I was exhausted after Seven Ways so I couldn't really stay longer after.

Saturday - Day 2

The day started of really nice on what I heard best in my life in terms of day set. Mr. John 00 Fleming did a proper Progressive Trance set and we can even say an Airwave tribute by the same time. The set had so many Airwave tracks that I lost count of them. If I would play during outside during the day, it would be exactly like this, the same and exact way, trancy and progressive. He did not forget to crank us up with some progressive techno tracks in the middle of the set.

After, I went inside to listen to Sam. Very good Psy-Trance set, lots of progressive. First time I'm seeing him mixing and satisfied.

Dave Nadz & LeBlanc went on at 7:30 pm. From what I know it was LeBlanc's first gig since he stopped being a Techno DJ years ago. Their set was hard and driving, tech and uplifting. They played some of their upcoming releases along with this outstanding mashup of them: John O'Callaghan - Stresstest (John Askew Remix) with Paul Oakenfold - Bullet in the Dark. It is a dancefloor destroyer.

Video: [ www.facebook.com ]

Magnus, the other headliner, started to mix at 9:30 pm. Magnus has his own style, it was banging Full On Psy-Trance with pure Uplifting Trance breakdowns for 2 hours. Very refreshing.

2 hours later, Seven Ways versus Magnus. My heart was about to leave my body so I sat and listen instead of dancing, trying to keep my remaining energies for Ross. Still the best of the best as you could expect from such a team up.

Fortunately I rest a bit before Ross' set, it was the highlight set of the festival because it was the most diversified.
I don't think this year I heard better music than at Dream Creator 2013, it was by far the leading event for any Trance Music purists, every set has been mixed beyond the standards.
Whereas every DJ played a set mainly centered on one sound or one specific genre, Ross distinguished himself by playing a set so diversified that all the zombie among the crowd suddenly "zombie-resurected". Ross was the shotgun in a Resident Evil game. Tech-Trance, Full On Psy, old school Techno then going back to Full On again... It was the set that the crowd enjoyed the most in 2 days of festival, and we should hear it again! Guys, do some pressure on Ross for making him re-record the set.

Horizon stepped on the decks after, a DJ known in the underground scene for being a pioneer. He didn't disappoint and delivered the merchandise just like I heard him for the first time at Black Light 2012.

Ross, myself and the gang had to leave an hour after Horizon began, so we couldn't hear Virtual Light, hopefully he's playing at Mind Over Matter II.

As said above, this Dream Creator was only for the music, as a party it didn't really stand.

Legal, organization and competition. Those 3 words were the key points for having a successful Dream Creator.

The main point that drown the festival are the legal issues. Unlike the previous years, the city didn't really authorize an outdoor rave this time, so they were forced to close all the outdoor rooms at midnight. Adding to that the official title " Festival de DJs de Québec 2013 " for differentiating themselves from raves. They had so many other legal issues that listing them would be endless. The organization didn't help too.

By cancelling the outdoor rooms, they had to reschedule the 75 DJs that were already booked.
Example: " Paris Hilton has been booked for outside at 2 am. Where is she going now? We booked all the DJs before organizing that part of the event. Oops. So now we must figure out a solution instead of cancelling everything. I think I got it, let's do 75 DJs in 3 days instead of 1 night! Superb! Master plan! YES!"

No.

Not only they falsely envisioned a 3 days festival branded as a 300 000 clients event, but they had the arrogance to think that people will bother to show up twice for an international headliner who played on Friday and Saturday (John 00 Fleming). Without mentioning they want to attract a rave crowd at an event starting at 6 pm and ending at 5 am. Does not compute.

The timeslots and rooms have been remade over 100 times on the event page, Sunday has been cancelled without even announcing it, re-scheduling over and over again, promotion... This year's organization was a total mess seriously.

The security was another thing overly abused. Did you ever witness security do a search on your car in the parking? Me, never. I thought only the cops were allowed to do that.

Last thing that drown Dream Creator is the competition. You had OpenMind, Osheaga, Snoop Dogg and 15 other big festivals at the same time. Laugh but people in Quebec City that are going to see Snoop Dogg can also attend Dream Creator, it is a small scene.

I think it pretty much sums up all the issues this year at Dream Creator that should explain the lost from a few thousands of tickets sold to 200 - 300. Even great music can't substitute an organization.

Dream Creator is the foundation that holds Quebec City's house of cards, most of the city's promoters play a role in it (reminder: over 70 DJs booked in a small town), whether it is direct or indirect. If the same kind of edition is announced next year, a huge part of Quebec City's scene should disappear in a near future.

My review of Mainframe

As written down on the notepad...

7 pm.
'TBA' is removed onto Mainframe's event page. We now know where Mainframe, an underground rave of 600 people announced 3 months ago, will be held at. I don't know if I'm ready yet for it. I need to...

8:33 pm
I'm thinking about the time I should leave to Mainframe. 10 maybe? Or 11? ...

9:02 pm
Did they lie to us about 'underground music'? Was even M.I.K.E. 'underground' in early 2000? John Askew? And who are ''they''? Thoughts are invading my mind as Mainframe approaches...

10:15 pm
Getting a bit lost in my thoughts... what defines a 'rave'? Is it only a party at night? Where? Is it like a secret society of people partying at night in the movie 'Blade'? Where does that term come from?

10:43 pm
I think the word ''underground'' refers to a culture, ''people living into the 'underground' ", not ''too small to be unkown". Maybe... not. Yes?

11:11 pm
So those people living into this underground culture and adopting its lifestyle are going to parties called 'raves'? It makes sense. Probably. And people partying at clubs are simply clubbing...

11:19 pm
Fuck. I didn't see the time, need to leave now. Where are my keys! ...

11:55 pm
Finally found the place. It is in the basement of some Chinese restaurant, downtown. Downtown looks empty and streets are dead. Everything looks gray.

12:06 am
I'm seeing all kinds of people in front of the door, outside. Artists, poors, wealthy, gothics, students, hippies, young, old, punks, nerds... All seem to share something in common. It makes me curious...

12:08 am
Stepping into the Mainframe...

12:13 am
2 and a half rooms spotted. One is for Hard Psy and Full On, the second for Progressive Psy/Trance/Techno (similar to J00F).

12:25 am
Music is damn fast in the Full On room...

1:54 am
Now outside, need to take a break. Feels like a rave in the 90's. Feels underground.

2:26 am
When does Chromatone start? Hell, I don't even know how he looks like and no one else seems to know neither. Djs are not superstars for them...

3:35 am
I think it is D-Brain mixing, Full On so far, driving basslines. The headliner might be after him but I need to leave earlier, my legs hurt, goodly though...

3:51 am
Raves had a different evolution than clubs. Was Bal en Blanc ever a rave? Did it start and evolve within the clubbing culture?

4:02 am
Maybe I should change my review format next time.

My review of

Private Planet: John 00 Fleming / Seven Ways @ CDL - Friday May 10th 2013

I was lucky to arrive in time to hear John 00 Fleming (I had to park my car at the end of the city... this shouldn't happen to a guy owning a small Focus. The ad lied). I only heard 3 tracks by the DJ playing just before J00F, Johnny Messina, so I can't review anything about that set. Let's skip to J00F.

John 00 Fleming is my favorite DJ (along with Mark Sherry) since 2009 or so. I was being introduce to his music in 2008, without paying much attention to it. It was only a year later that I discovered the magic with his Psy Euphoria compilation. From then on, my passion for his music grew each day.

Yes, don't laugh at me, unlike many old schoolers here and there, I only caught the passion for Trance Music in 2005 at 16 years old - and missing the golden age of Trance and raving at the same time - with 'Tiësto - Adagio for Strings', which is Trance's greatest masterpiece ever (sorry for repeating myself, I'm getting '0ldz' I guess). So it makes sense I didn't know J00F before that time, unfortunately.

I'm saying it right now, I was a bit disappointed by J00F's set, still very enjoyable though, but far from his last set at CIRCUS Afterhours in 2010 and especially his one at Black Light 7 in Quebec City (review linked into the comments), which are the type of sets you could expect from a DJ like him.

He is an underground DJ that had to play for a non-underground crowd. Any good DJs are adapting to the crowd in order to make dance most of it. That's what he did.

J00F probably remembered how was Montreal the last time he came. He remembered that only 3 to 4 people, on the 10 ones standing on the dancefloor, were able to dance to his music.

At Commission Des Liqueurs this last Friday, he went proggier, playing Progressive Trance and some Progressive House, nothing too underground this time, such as Neelix, which fits everywhere.

He started at 126 bpm, ending at 134, or nearby. He tried several times to crank it up above 134bpm with Psy-Trance, but slowed down immediately as he suspected the crowd to leave the dancefloor. So he went back to Progressive Trance at the end of his set.

I don't think he could have played differently, with psy-trance at higher BPMs, in a venue such as this private room at CDL. The music chosen fits perfectly the intimate vibe, it is not peak hours after all. The problem is probably only me that wanted to hear J00F playing at peak time. But again why do you want to hear John 00 Fleming if he's playing an opening set?

Next time, the booking should be targeted for the psy-trance/underground scenes, that's the scene where J00F belongs.

I still had a wonderful time enjoying such good music, it doesn't always happen to get decent Progressive Trance in the city, or should I say it never happens (aside from Basil O'Glue). It's just that I'm used to hear J00F mixing without any limits.

After J00F's set, it was Seven Ways mixing for 1 hour.

John 00 Fleming and Seven Ways are always together wherever they are booked. The match is always perfect, whether on the radio (link just under) or in real life.

Seven Ways started on some banging Progressive Psy-Trance, choosing to up the level a bit after J00F. Then went to Hard Uplifting and harder tech-trance as most of the crowd didn't seem to enjoy Psy at harder BPMs but rather Uplifting and Tech-Trance. His selection was wisely done as always. Closing on '3rd Earth (Heatbeat Remix)'

I wouldn't say the rave scene is dying, it will never die. As a matter of fact, the situation is now returning back to the 'pre-rave' era (80s) for several scenes, such as the one I'm coming from. What do we call 'cycles' are moving along tendencies. Just like fashion, it's always moving. New profiles are arriving and some are leaving.

What is probably dying here is this network of people as Facebook seems more popular than ever for managing communities and everything centered on events. In other words, Facebook is exactly like the biggest rave forum ever created, an ultimate advanced form of [ rave.ca ]

The more you get older, the less you are on Facebook. That could be a nice clientele to target for [ rave.ca ] But I don't think it would work out unless a revolution happens.

End: Save [ rave.ca ] elsewhere.

I say this for your sake. Or you'll end up on your ass like so many aspiring promoters.

The scene is stretched enough as it is, imho. Doesn't mean you can't succeed and make a name for yourself (lulz), but you'll have to show more initiative than that.

This forum is for old farts and trolls. Welcome, though.

I am already collaborating with Psylo Productions (Triskel, Shamanik), Transition (Black Light, Quebec City) and probably more to come in the future.

I come here to ask for suggestions, you don't seem to have any, all you care about is judging. So do a favor for me and the citizens of Montreal, please go work at Commission Charboneau and get laid with Sonia LeBel.
Actually you don't need to wonder why your scene is so stretched just by looking at your message, you demonstrate it very well. The question is short and simple.

One would be dumb moron to not use all the resources available. I'm using all the ways available, I'm asking everyone, all my contacts and searching everywhere. May you apologize me in advance for not working in the hardest and stupidest way possible just like these goddamn wannabe promoters that you are yourself describing in your message.

My collaborators (Psylo and Transitions) are also running out of ideas. It's difficult to find something that closes after 3 am in what we've found. This is the problem. We already went out twice on the road searching for spots available and none could be found. We think it would end up in some school gyms because of the facilities that are more suitable.

It's not as easy as getting out of your house and throw a party at the first building you look at.

I'm looking for underground venues that have an industrial look. Our goal is to find a place where we could do a rave just like in the old days when raves were illegal. We're aiming for something similar to this, which feels creepy and underground :
