Poppers are sold in sex shops, as they apparently facilitate sex for gay people. They typically are in the form of small medicine-like bottles, whose vapours are inhaled. I ended up experiencing n-nitrite as a result of a spur of the moment decision, during the last hour of a recent jungle party.

At the time I inhaled poppers, I was experiencing the comedown of a quarter-pill of speed consumed aprox. 5 hours earlier, making me slightly jittery and uncomfortable.

About 30 seconds after inhalation, I experienced a somewhat powerful "head-rushing" sensation. The transition from baseline to peak effects happened incredibly fast (~15 sec). The peak was a state of intoxication not dissimilar to a strong alcohol high. Effects included: euphoria, dizziness, relaxation, and comfort. Fortunately I was seated on a couch at this time, as I don't think I would have been able to stand up, even if I'd tried.

The peak lasted another minute or so, and then the effects began to taper off for the next 5-10 minutes.

While it was a fairly interesting and somewhat enjoyable experience, I see no psychedelic or thereputic potential whatsover in poppers. And obviously its short duration is a drawback for recreational use. I'd imagine poppers could be psychologically addictive, as its short duration may spurn some to use it repeatedely.

I have no intention to repeat the experience.

its not to "facilitate sex for gay people" dude... its to boost your orgasm 100x more :) works with any orgasm, opposite-sex or same-sex induced. apparently its somewhat toxic so abusing isnt recommended. however, inhale that shit AT THE VERY MOMENT you orgasm (difficult, but achievable), and nitrous oxide will seem like weak leafy weed to you ;)

it was sooo funny.

i was in London shopping (in Camden Town) and for some reason i thought "popppers" were like noly available there and i didn't want to spend money, so i totally teefed it...

then the litttle cubicle owner caught me and made me pay 20 pounds not to report it.

it was called "PURE GOLD" and it got me and my friends reltively high (right, jeff?) for a grand ole evening.

then the bottle spilled while sharon was moving.

Never had an interest in poppers personally and I doubt I ever will. Those fumes are pretty bad for you,... maybe not AS bad as sniffing gasoline but definitely not that far off.

We used to put Liquid Gold in the incense before mass. Rush is "Liquid Incense" right? The faithful were full of the spirit.

Twenty pounds for a bottle of Liquid Gold! Liquid Gold is a UK brand, the best is Nitro Supra made in Belgium. It's about a fiver, also there's one called Taiwan Blue but I've never tried it.

These guys have both

poppers is more widespread about gay community because it delates mucous membranes, such as anus...

i'd say it's worth a try "just to know how it feels", but i don't like it much because each times i had some i felt so badly intoxicated and most of the time i got some kind of headache, quite like hungoverness...
as for the effects, i agree with poisoned candy, and i can but trust ze'ev's moist experience ;)

Poppers(nitrous) are actually quite harmless, or at least that's what they say in the medical community, where it has, for many years been labelled "safe". Obviously, everything in moderation, but it most certainly can't be compared with gasoline... it would compare more closely with cigarettes or coffee.

the poppers people are talking about here are NOT nitrous as in laughing gas (whip-its), theyre from a family of chemicals called Alkyl Nitrites and are by NO means as safe as coffee. Alkyl Nitrites have been proven to be mutagenic and carcinogenic.

Health risks: Anybody who suffers from circulatory problems or from low blood pressure should be particularly wary of this substance. Using poppers can be a serious health risk for those with heart trouble, breathing problems, or anaemia and glaucoma. Always wash off any amyl that spills on your skin and never drink the stuff - it is highly poisonous.
Swallowing a large quantity can lead to unconsciousness. Some deaths have occurred this way. Long term use can lead to nausea, dizziness, delirium and impaired respiration.

Health hazards
The possible hazards of nitrite use has been a contentious issue since their introduction; in particular, a possible link between nitrites and AIDS and AIDS related illnesses such as Kaposi's sarcoma has been hotly disputed. At the time the AIDS crisis began to unfold, the poppers industry was making over $50 million a year and was the main financial support of the gay press through advertising. Joseph Miller, president of Great Lakes Products, the manufacturers of popular nitrite brands such as RUSH, claimed in 1983 that poppers had been exonerated by the Center for Disease Control; James Curran of the CDC was quick to reply that he had been misinterpreted by Miller, but the gay press failed to publicize his response. He also stated that:

Other health hazards (than AIDS) from misuse of these drugs have been documented. Your press release and advertisements in the Advocate are misleading and misrepresent the CDC findings and their implications... While it is unlikely that nitrites will be implicated as the primary cause of AIDS, their role as a co-factor in some of the illnesses found in this syndrome has not been ruled out. I must insist that you discontinue the misuse and misinterpretation of CDC findings.
Letter from James Curran to Joseph Miller, September 27, 1983
In particular, an argument is often made connecting Kaposi's sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, with poppers use. A minority of scientists, including HIV/AIDS denialist Peter Duesberg, suggest the existence of a link between the two. These scientists argue that Kaposi's sarcoma occurs in homosexual AIDS-patients 20 times more often than in non-homosexual AIDS-patients, and that therefore some cofactor must be involved beyond the virus HIV itself. Poppers have been suggested as a candidate for that cofactor, especially in view of the fact that they have been shown to be carcinogenic. However, despite their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, poppers have not been concretely linked as a cofactor in either the AIDS virus itself or Kaposi's sarcoma, and a majority of the scientific community rejects this view.

Apart from the AIDS controversy, there are a number of negative health effects caused by poppers that are not still being debated. High doses of Nitrites may cause methemoglobinemia, particularly in individuals predisposed towards such a condition.[1]. Use with viagra can cause heart failure, and individuals with anaemia or heart, breathing or blood pressure conditions may be at risk of complications. Since pressure in the eye and cranium is increased, individuals with glaucoma or traumatic head injuries may be have an added risk of negative short term and long term effects.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, use of these drugs is associated with unsafe sexual practices that greatly increase the risk of contracting and spreading infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.[2] A short-term immunosuppressive effect has been observed in mice as well as in humans; regular use of the drug over years may lead to an irreversible suppression of the immune system.[3]

Poppers users also run the risk of developing a psychological dependence to the drug, and tolerance has been shown to increase with use.

Alkyl nitrites can burn the skin on contact, and may be fatal if swallowed or injected.

well, any substance can be lethal, it just depends on the dosage... even chocolate can kill you

but i agree that one deep breath over a poppers bottle is more likely to destroy much more things than drinking one or two cups of coffee

okay well that AIDs stuff is just silly, and if you read the warnings on an aspirin bottle it would look like the rest of that stuff. To say it's completely safe would be moronic, but listing warning labels doesn't say much either.

to say you heard it's on the same level as coffee is moronic.
to say the AIDS thing is "silly" is moronic. i'm not saying its the word of god or anything, after all it IS referred to as a hotly disputed controversy, but it definetly warrants consideration. alkyl nitrites are potent immunosuppresive substances, and AIDS is an immune system virus. there's high instances of both the aforementioned substances and virus in gay people. it would be silly NOT to look a little closer.
but like hey everyone, i like totally heard this one time that like, its totally safe to do poppers and theyre like totally like coffee!! so like lets snort some poppers
