I never suggested that at all, I never said I "heard" they were as safe as coffee either. It's called over-exaggeration. If somebody wants to get high than evidence suggests they are better off doing poppers than other drugs, and I don't think that is a harmful thing to say unless you are totally stupid and think that downing a bottle of aspirin won't kill you. If people are gonna do drugs, they're gonna do drugs. If you eat processed meat, you're eating Nitrite.

Confusion Between Nitrites & Nitrates
by Erowid & Torsten
v 1.0, March 2001

In many articles and information sources, both online and off, there is a confusion between the terms Nitrite (with an "i") and Nitrate (with an "a"). Nitrite = NO2 , Nitrate = NO3. Both nitrites and nitrates are used as medicines to treat heart problems including angina, chest pains, and as emergency medicine during heart attacks.

Nitrites
Amyl-, Butyl-, and Isobutyl-Nitrite are used recreationally and are referred to as "poppers". They are known for causing a brief head rush, skin flushing, and muscle relaxation. They are sometimes labelled as "video head cleaners" in order to get past the legal restrictions for inahalants, but it's questionable whether they are actually useful as such. Nitrites are packaged and sold as heart medicines in small glass ampules inside cloth. The ampule is broken and the vapors inhaled as emergency remedies for heart / angina attacks.

From [ thriveonline.oxygen.com ]

Amyl nitrite (AM-il NYE-trite) is related to the nitrate medicines and is used by inhalation to relieve the pain of angina attacks. It works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload.

Nitrates
Nitrates on the other hand are not used recreationally and are not "Poppers". They are sold in tablet form and are administered sublingually as a heart medication.

From Dr Mani's Heart Disease Online:

Nitrates are a group of drugs that act on blood vessels and dilate them. By relaxing smooth muscle in the vessel wall, they produce an increase in diameter which in turn increases the volume of blood flowing through them.

Both of these chemicals act similarly, relaxing muscles and reducing blood pressure. According to several sources, Amyl-Nitrite was first discovered in 1844 and its blood-vessel relaxing properties were discovered quickly thereafter. Later, Nitroglycerin was discovered to have similar effects and became one of the most common heart medication prescribed in the 20th Century, replacing Amyl-Nitrite because it had fewer side effects and was easier to administer.

Many doctors, web sources, and drug reference sheets such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) confuse Nitrites and Nitrates. One recent issue where the two have been confused is in news reports that heart patients died after taking Viagra with oral nitrate heart medication. Whether or not inhalant nitrites and Viagra are also a dangerous combination has not necessarily been established. Much of medical literature I have seen refers to amyl-nitrite as 'amyl-nitrate'. The interactions between nitrates and Viagra are well known and thus amyl-nitrite is automatically lumped into the same group. Although there is good reason to think the blood-pressure lowering effects of nitrites could interact dangerously with Viagra, other blood-pressure lowering medications are not considered dangerous in combination with Viagra. Fatalities from combining the two are primarily a matter of men who take nitrate heart medications to treat already existing severe cardio-vascular problems and who then also take Viagra, so its difficult to extrapolate reliably to healthy fun-seekers. Caution is obviously advisable.

It should also be noted that in recent years, amyl-nitrite has been replaced substantially by butyl- and isobutyl-nitrite because the corresponding alcohol is easier to acquire for manufacture and also because it smells somewhat less unpleasant (a sweet solvent smell rather than a sweaty socks / locker room solvent smell). Some countries have also specifically banned Over The Counter (OTC) sale of amyl-nitrite because of its recreational use, but have not yet blocked the sale of butyl- and isobutyl-nitrite.

errrrrrrrrr ok.......when was the confusion over nitrites and nitrates debated? you claimed that poppers were nitrous (oxide? acid? who the fuck knows? either way its neither of them).

lets review what your original post put forward and the veracity of each statement:

1. poppers are nitrous (FALSE)
2. poppers are "quite harmless" (FALSE)
3. the "medical community" says poppers are "safe" (in the info you posted i didnt see anything that explicitly states that poppers are "safe". a quick google search did uncover a NIDA report that stated that alkyl nitrites are safe for therapeutic use. the use we are talking about here, recreational buzz-hunting, most definetly does not qualify as therapeutic, therefore its claim as being "safe" becomes invalid. if you want to interpret that in some other way that allows you to ease your anxiety and inhale poppers without feeling like youre causing yourself harm, then be my guest. but in terms of a blanket statement, FALSE)

i think it IS a harmful thing to say because if youre making statements and acting like you know, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE out there is going to take you at your word. and we all know how many idiots there are in this world, ravewave notwithstanding.
disseminating incorrect information is harmful to everyone.
on that note i should thank you for your last post, which was more informative and accurate, and cited sources.

First of all I never did poppers and I never intend to. Second of all, the article on the difference between nitrates and nitrites was posted because the statement you made about nitrite and viagra was false, it was confused with nitrate and viagra. The effects of nitrite and viagra are currently unknown, whereas viagra and nitrate can kill you, and for all we know it may be the case with nitrite too, but there is no evidence for that as of now. Third of all I am not about to debate the morality of my posts, nor will I take responsibility for someone else's drug abuse, nor did I ever say they were harmless, I said they were relatively harmless based on Ze'ev's link in which they claim it is as safe as aspirin and so forth but you didn't read that.

read these words:

Viagra Contraindications include:

* When taking other nitric oxide donors, organic nitrites and nitrates, such as glyceryl trinitrate, sodium nitroprusside, amyl nitrite ("poppers") (Cheitlin et al 1999)

now i dont know about you, but i have a feeling that the good doctors over at Pfizer have a little more authority with regards to a drug that THEY INVENTED, than erowid does. erowid is a really good site and they strive hard to put up accurate info, but it is by no means the only one, and sometimes not all their info is correct.

its not a question of morality. it's a question of correct or incorrect information, that's all.
if you point out errors on my part, with regards to erroneous info that i put forth, i'llhave no problem admitting i'm wrong or dont know what the hell i'm talking about. i checked out ze'ev's link and i have yet to see a credible objective piece of scientific fact. theres a million CLAIMS that so-called experts and scientists SAY it is safe, but for some reason, the authors of the website want you to give them your email address so they can send you the files which contain "all the facts", instead of just posting them on the site. rather dubious, in my opinion. i'm waiting on those emails so as soon as they enlighten me, i'll come right back here and eat my words.

I never drew any conclusions of whether I was right or wrong but when someone disects my every word and pulls them apart I'm goign to find myself defending why I said those words. Everyone who writes an article on anything is more or less trying to convince you on one side or the other so they over-exaggerate and the truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as having only one side. I don't think that we can prove with any amount of evidence that it is safe or not safe cause nothing at all is safe in excess and nothing at all is safe for everybody. There are people who die just from eating peanut butter sandwiches. I think the best thing is always to consider the two sides of the debate and in some cases like this one I don't see how they necessarily have to conflict with eachother. In some situations with some people who do it once or twice it will be safe and in some situations with some other people it will be unsafe even to do once like with anything else.
